Now that the 2015 draft is in the books, I wanted to look back at our draft class from 2012 seeing as how it's been 3 years and we can now make certain claims based on each pick. 1st Round – Ryan Tannehill (QB, Texas A&M) 2nd Round – Jonathan Martin (OT, Stanford) 3rd Round – Olivier Vernon (DE, Miami) 3rd Round – Michael Egnew (TE, Missouri) 4th Round – Lamar Miller (RB, Miami) 5th Round – Josh Kaddu (OLB, Oregon) 6th Round – B.J. Cunningham (WR, Michigan State) 7th Round – Kheeston Randall (DL, Texas) 7th Round – Rishard Matthews (WR, Nevada) Tannehill, Vernon, and Miller are all solid starters. Matthews has shown flashes. Everyone else busted. In the end though, gaining three above average starters, including a QB has to be looked at as a successful draft.
If I could change a few things here are the top 3 alternatives taken within 10 picks after ours.... 1st Round – Ryan Tannehill (QB, Texas A&M) Wouldnt change 2nd Round – Jonathan Martin (OT, Stanford) Could've had: Alshon Jeffery, Mychal Kendricks, Bobby Wagner 3rd Round – Olivier Vernon (DE, Miami) Wouldnt change 3rd Round – Michael Egnew (TE, Missouri) Couldve had: Tyrone Crawford, Mohammed Sanu, Nick Foles 4th Round – Lamar Miller (RB, Miami) Wouldnt change 5th Round – Josh Kaddu (OLB, Oregon) Could've had: Shaun Prater, Randy Bullock, Chris Rainey 6th Round – B.J. Cunningham (WR, Michigan State) Couldve had: Danny Trevathan 7th Round – Kheeston Randall (DL, Texas) Couldve had: Alfonzo Dennard, Nate Potter, J.R. Sweezy 7th Round – Rishard Matthews (WR, Nevada) Wouldnt change
Really? And yet he drafted the #2 and #5 ranked cornerbacks according to pff. I know everyone here hates Ireland and he made some bad decisions but he was a damn good drafter.
I was going to but decided to keep it strictly drafted players. Including Shelby, those are 5 legit contributors. That's pretty good.
To this day I still can't believe that ginger idiot waited until the 6th round to take a WR when our corps consisted of Hartline, Bess, Clyde Gates and Legedu Naanee.
Overall that was a pretty good draft, ya...I mean you can pick a few of those picks apart in hindsight. Personally I didn't like the Egnew pick at all back then...nor the Kadu pick. Loved the RT, Vernon, and Matthews picks, but was hoping for a WR in the first few rounds. Still glad he's gone. I think this year's draft could be special for this team...we got some great talent far below their value, and I trust Hickey + UDFA.
Tannehill alone makes it a good draft. Vernon and Miller are icing. Nice to see the Ireland haters are still out there lol.
