Plot Summary: A complex, multi-layered mystery adventure, "Watchmen" is set in an alternate 1985 America in which costumed superheroes are part of the fabric of everyday society, and the "Doomsday Clock" - which charts the USA's tension with the Soviet Union - is permanently set at five minutes to midnight. When one of his former colleagues is murdered, the washed-up but no less determined masked vigilante Rorschach sets out to uncover a plot to kill and discredit all past and present superheroes. As he reconnects with his former crime-fighting legion - a ragtag group of retired superheroes, only one of whom has true powers - Rorschach glimpses a wide-ranging and disturbing conspiracy with links to their shared past and catastrophic consequences for the future. Their mission is to watch over humanity...but who is watching the watchmen?

    A 4.5-Hour Watchman Movie?

We’re unsure if this is good or bad news, but Zack Snyder (300), told the New York Times that his current superhero epic, The Watchman, is quickly “nearing three hours long and I know I have a fight on my hands just with that.”

The Times article speculates that an extended Director’s Cut DVD of the flick might run around four-and-a-half hours, if a ultimate edition of the DVD is released folding in the comic-within-the-comic The Black Freighter…

In the Watchmen graphic novel, a side-comic is read by a kid sitting by a newsstand. The story covers the desperate attempts of a sailor’s attempts to get home to warn his family about the coming of the Black Freighter, a phantom ship.

Now, Warner Brothers has announced that The Black Freighter will get its own animated DVD feature released only five days after The Watchman hits theaters. Gerard Butler will be voicing the narrator who has to warn his family.

Comic was fantastic, a classic. I actually like that its going to be long. Theres just no way to do justice to that story in two hours.

I say give it the Kill Bill treatment: Make it one film, then chop it in half to make it two.

I would be really cool to see it done in like 12 1 hour episodes but then that would have to be on HBO or Showtime. Really the story is epic I don't even know how they will chop it down to 3 or 4 hours. Would be a shame to do this series an injustice like V for Vendetta. V was alright but the comic was so much more than the movie was.

    "Somewhere, someone shouts "Cut!"

And I'm standing amongst them. Nite Owl shakes my hand. The Comedian slaps me on the back. Silk Spectre smiles a dazzling greeting. I'm overwhelmed by the depth and detail of what I'm seeing.

But more than that. I'm overwhelmed by the commitment, the passion, the palpable desire to do this right.

I'm starting to feel a glow that eclipses even Dr. Manhattan's...

    -Dave Gibbons

Gibbons is the artist on the series, he has some very nice things to say about the movie from visits to the set on the website. Meh might come out good, have to wait and see.

Watchmen Director’s Cut 3 Hours Long

The Watchmen with green-screen-happy director Zach Snyder has a rough cut pieced together that is a whopping 3-hours long. Very few special effects shots are finished, but the narrative is there, according to Snyder, who hopes to release the entire cut on DVD as a fan fetish 3-hour block of comic adaptation.

I liked how they used Smashing Pumpkin's The Beginning is the End is the Beginning(even tho they used it on Batman and Robin). That song rocks.

I saw the trailer for this in front of The Dark Knight yesterday. Looks like it is shaping up to be really, really good. I'll have to read through the novel again.

I'll admit, it was a really good trailer, very much like 300's. Though I still think of Malin Ackerman as the chick who peed on Ben Stiller in the Heartbreak Kid movie...

Love the quote: "The world will look up and shout "save us" and I'll whisper, "no"."

    Send a heartbeat to
The void that cries through you
Relive the pictures that have come to pass
    For now we stand alone
The world is lost and blown
And we are flesh and blood disintegrate
    With no more to hate

Is it bright where you are
    Have the people changed
Does it make you happy you're so strange
    And in your darkest hour
    I hold secrets flame
We can watch the world devoured in it's pain

Perfect for The Watchmen. I think the producers are SP fans.

Zack Snyder, director of the upcoming Watchmen movie, screened about 30 minutes of heretofore unseen footage from the epic superhero saga to groups of reporters on Oct. 1 at Warner studios in West Hollywood, Calif., and also announced that the film will have a running time of two hours and 43 minutes.

Snyder screened three clips. The first showed the attack on Edward Blake, aka The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), followed by the title sequence that sets up the Watchmen universe. The second clip is the transformation of physicist Jon Osterman (Billy Crudup) into the superhuman blue Dr. Manhattan. The final clip was the assault by Silk Spectre II (Malin Akerman) and Nite Owl II (Patrick Wilson) on the prison to free Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley).

When asked if the stars' contracts have a sequel clause, Snyder winced. "I don't know, I have to be honest," he told an audience. "That would be interesting but, there can't be a sequel. There can't be a prequel. Not with me involved, anyway. I have no idea if they could find someone to do it, but it wouldn't be me. That's crazy talk."

Suposedly the film is going to be anywhere from 3 hrs to 3 and a half hours long.

I dont see why they dont split it up into 2 movies ala Kill Bill.

Meh. The Watchmen is sort of like the after dinner mint. We've only had the rice/potato/starch (Batmans) and had to send the filet mignon back to the kitchen because it was an overdone piece of flab (SR). We still need the vegetable side dish (Wonder Woman), soup/salad (Flash/Green Lantern), appetizer (Aquaman), and cocktails (Green Arrow).

I would have to disagree this could easily end up one of my favorite movies of all time. I absolutely loved the graphic novel, more than I had expected since I read it after seeing first trailer. I definitely look forward to this and it seems to follow very closely to the novel which is all the better.

Two hours and about 50 minutes according to Zack Snyder, give or take 10 minutes.

They've also changed the ending compared to the book.

Already got my tickets for opening night Imax, it's getting good reviews so far. Read a few things that have lowered my expectations a bit. The graphic novel is great, I have very little faith in the director, but hopefully he can pull it off. Just have to remember there are 3 versions of the film, so what we get in theaters isnt really the finished product. Hopefully this version is still good, but I'm looking forward to the directors cut and the extended cut w/ the additional pirate comic story line running through it

I guess it adds a little intrigue for those who've already read the comics. As long as it's not a Brett Ratner total destruction, I believe in Zach Snyder after what he did adapting 300.
