http://miamiherald.typepad.com/dolphins_in_depth/2015/06/surprise-no-practice-today-fellas.html I'm all for community relations - particularly in the offseason - but I wouldn't cancel practice to go paint a school. Shula never would have done this.
I remember a documentary about Shula where they talked about him running practice on the roof of a parking garage as the field wasn't available (I don't recall why it wasn't available).
Perhaps. This might well make better men out of many of the team. It might also improve camraderie. Problem is that we aren't very good at football.
If that's what you believe, do you really think one extra OTA practice will be the difference to get us to become a really good team? mole hill - meet mountain
Reports of an already injured Sturgis tearing a labrum applying painter's tape. To undergo surgery tomorrow.
I like the lesson... I wonder though., wouldn't these players be willing to do it on an off-day? Also, Philbs please make sure the guys with back-concerns aren't doing the landscaping if it involves bending over, moving rocks, shovelling, moving heavy sod or dirt etc. No injuries on a day off of practice pls!!! Yawn. Who cares what Shula would have done? It was a different time, different world then. Stop being so dramatic. Teams all over the NFL this season have been cancelling offseason practices. Hell, Arizona did the same thing today. These kinds of decisions help teams bond with each other, and their coaching staffs as it's the coaches giving them the "day off". Making something out of nothing.
In the last CBA, OTA's were reduced to 10 practices and the overall offseason schedule was cut by 5 weeks from 14 weeks to 9 weeks. How important could 1 out of 10 OTA practices be? Let's skip a few more.
Honestly don't have a problem with it... it's an OTA not a practice. To me, the term practice implies an impending game at the end of the week. Anyway, can you imagine the look on these kids' faces when these big football players walk in... Suh? I think that'll be priceless for the kids and hopefully some of the players as well.
I don't think missing one OTA is going to matter in the least bit. We're not going to be at the end of the season saying, "Man, if we'd just have had that ONE OTA, we'd have made the playoffs!!"
We need more of this actually. Make the fans feel like they know the players on a personal level. That gets people really invested in the team.
Well if we miss out on the playoffs I'm sure we're going to think, man if only we didn't skip that day of OTA to plant trees for that school, we definitely would have made it!
How many times have we heard, "it's just in shorts...talk to me when the pads are on?" 1 missed OTA = WTF ever. The Bills attended a Jim Kelly event instead of an OTA...the Pats skipped an OTA to help Brady with her tampon insertion technique (anybody else see that? no?)...other teams have skipped an OTA day to do other things...not a big deal in the grand scheme of things. I think it's a great thing they did.
Shula wouldn't have done this. Really? Who cares, doesn't affect the team one bit. People like to find the negative in every little thing
Yeesh. Wait till this guy finally realizes that the team usually cancels a real pad practice here and there. Nevermind that most teams do the same thing.
You do realize that these really aren't practices right? Theres basically no contact, no pads, no real efforts being put forth by anyone. Watch some of the videos. Lamar Miller catches a dump off pass, he should have been hit right away by two defenders, yet he walks through them, into the secondary, puts some moves on a DB for fun who does nothing that would resemble any effort, and Miller walks into the endzone. I mean really... is that what you're worried about us missing? OTA's are organized team ACTIVITIES. Anything from "practice", to workouts, to team bonding trips, or community service type things like this. If you do some research, you'll note that all kinds of teams cancelled a "practice" to do something like this. Some just flat out didn't even schedule a practice, and scheduled an alternate activity. Probably exactly what we did here, but it's better for the coaching staff to tell the players hey guys... we're cancelling practice today! OTA's are all about team building more than anything. That's done by more way's than having a "practice" that's softer in nature than you and your buddies organizing a game of touch or flag football. Relax. I'm waiting for the post now after our first loss... "Remember when we cancelled that OTA practice..."
