i don't know if i like the "deadline" approach. i'd rather him just keep doing what they're doing until someone steps up and earns the spot. assigning a date to choose is a bad idea.

I agree. I hope they don't rush this. Btw, I hate deadlines.

I don't remember him saying a date (Aug 9) but I may have missed it. I could see us "naming" a starter for the first preseason game, however, will that be the starter opening day?. As long as the opening day starter starts the 3rd preseason game I will not worry too much.

I don't see Sparano having a definitive answer on who the QB will be by then. And I see preaseason being a major factor in deciding the battle. He may have a starter picked out for that preseason game, but that might not be the guy that starts the regular season.

I like what he is doing. He picks the qb that is doind the best and then gets him all the time with the first team that is a good idea i think

I like the plan, pick a guy and give him the reigns to the offense. If you haven't earned the spot after two weeks, who's to say they will later. Allow the development of timing and things with the WR's.

I would not mind him pushing the date back to the end of the second preseason game

I like it, I also think that it will be McCown who starts.

Our current staff is very much a "by the numbers" sort of group, they don't seem to like to take chances and so far, Beck hasn't shined like I hoped he would, we still haven't scrimmaged yet so there is time.

I would not mind him push the date back to after te second week of prseaon because we should have a top 2 by then. But it is good to have a deadline you dont want them going in to the end of preseason chossing a quarterback. The qb that they choose needs to get time in with the offense and build chmistry with them . The wide reciver and qb need to get there timing down right before the season.

That's a good argument for picking the guy early, I agree. I would like to see how they do in the first preseason game at least before I name the starter. I also think playing against our defense in practice is much different then playing against another defense, even though preseason the defenses are pretty vanilla. I would like to see how each performs, even Henne, with the first team in for at least 1 or 2 series. I know that can't happen in preseason, realistically, but I think each QB should get some in game action with the 1st teamers before a starter is picked.

Maybe it's more of a mind game he's adding as pressure. He did say he wanted see how each one performed under pressure, so, what better way to apply pressure than to give them a deadline.

If the OL solidifies, then any of our QBs should have success behind it...

I am sure Defenses again will stack the box against us to prevent the run...

Our OL should then be able to still hold their blocks and let the RBs get past the LOS...

If that happens it would be easier for our passing game to develop...

    I know... I know... everyone knows this...but....

For the last 3 years we still have not had a consistant running game...numerous issues the RBs as well as the OL...

Hopefully this year that consistency develops...

Doesn't surprise me. ESPN misinterprets every comment made. I believe Michael Smith is part of ESPN correct?

I don't see a deadline being set at all. Sparano said he would like to pick the QB before the first preseason game but then goes on to lament that no QB has separated himself thus far. Earlier he had said he'd like to name the starter by the third preseason game but wasn't sure he'd be able to.

And the winner of the QB competition - DAN MARINO!

That's right. Marino dusts off the cleats and exclaims, "If Favre can do it, so can I!" Marino takes 1/2 practice to prove that even though he is well into his forties he is still far and away the best QB on Miami's roster.

He then proceeds to take Miami to a storybook worst to first season and finally gets his superbowl ring.

    I can dream can't I?

That title is a little misleading...The article doesn't say Sparano will pick a QB by the first preseason...it says he'd like to pick the guy by then...there's a big difference...too much could be being read into this statement..

SPARANO WILL PICK A QB SOON
Posted by Michael David Smith on July 29, 2008, 2:34 p.m.

Dolphins coach Tony Sparano said today that he would like to pick a winner in his three-man quarterback competition in time to have a starter in place for the August 9 preseason opener.

It would be nice to know who your starting QB will be but if there is no clear frontrunner it could go into the second and even third exhibition game .

Whoever starts may be at a disavantage.Sparano has recently said that it takes 8 or 9 quarters for an OL to gell.

It may be good to be the backup QB under those circumstances.

    Right on the money Larry.
The media is pathetic..... unbelievably pathetic in how they blatantly attempt to twist things into some type of controversy to be.

    I agree.

Having said that though, It's clear these media hacks twisted Sparano's statement out of context. I believe he was stating what a best case scenario would be. I think he's smart enough to know that this QB competition is nothing near a best case scenario though.

Preseason game performances will go a long way in determining who ends up the starter IMO.

    Please NO LEMONS!!

After watching pathetic quarterback play the last few seasons especially someone named afer a sour fruit. I find myself really rooting for Beck!I know he was awful in a few games but I blame "Fail Forward Fast" for his inept play. I hope Beck can muster up an intense rally and start wooing this coaching staff. But in all reality I just want a quarterback that can produce. May the best man win! Go Phins!

I like the "deadline" approach. If they are truly all struggling what's the difference? Previous regimes have let camp battles drag on way too long and used the first 3 or 4 regular season games to build chemistry/continuity. It would be nice to see Sparano use pre season for that, which is what those games are for, as opposed to letting camp battles where there isn't much difference between battling players drag on until week 1. Just my opinion.
