Keep up that enthusiasm. I love that about you. I could get excited and hyped up for the season just reading your posts.

We don't disagree, you just aren't really paying attention to what I'm saying.

    I'll try again.

My point isn't about rooting for an underdog or a national team. It isn't about being let down when the team doesn't succeed.

It is about, not having hope, not having joy, and still doing the thing that brings you just misery with no hope and no joy. These fans I'm talking about refuse to be optimistic, watch the games just to see what can go wrong and then spend a lot of free time lamenting the fact that they are miserable/frustrated about the team they knew wasn't gonna win and refused to have hope about. That doesn't make sense to me.

Your analogies haven't touched my point, and if you're going to respond with the same line of thought, then just don't because you don't understand what I'm saying and/or I'm not explaining it to you in a way you will understand.

I enjoy football as a team sport more than any other team sport actually. There are two reasons: 1) there are so many specialized positions (both players, coaches and FO) that can each visibly contribute to a win/loss, yet 2) it's such a team sport that a few great players cannot just win the game for you.

The first point can be compared to sports like soccer where it's harder to determine how one player affects the game than in football where you have enough matchups that are both spatially and temporally localized. The second point can be compared to a pitcher in baseball or a goalie in hockey that can just dominate.

And the fact it's still not that easy to quantify actually makes it interesting because it makes for good debates and also provides some interesting problems to try to solve with stats.

Well I'm trying to understand, so it's not for lack of effort. Let's just start with some quotes then, like the one in bold.

I've been rooting for the US Men's National Soccer team to win a World Cup since 1990 when they first got into a World Cup in 40 years. As I said in the previous post, you can look at many rabid fans of our soccer team and depending on the year you will see exactly what is bolded. There were many years where there was hardly any positive thing you could say and together with a sense of mutiny against the current coach, there was little hope in the current team. There have even been years where it's hard to have hope in the next generation.

I think I'm addressing exactly what you're saying, and certainly what is bolded. I'm going to stick through these dark ages where no matter what we do the US just seems not to be able to produce world class talent in soccer except at goalkeeper. For decades, it's been said that it will only take a decade or so before things are different. NOTHING seems to change that. Yeah, it's pathetic, unless the idea of success is barely reaching the knockout rounds of a World Cup.

So yes I think this is exactly what you're talking about and I prefer to stick through this than to just say to hell with US national team soccer. Same thing with the Dolphins. As I alluded to in the post you just said wasn't addressing your bolded point, rooting for the Dolphins has caused me more pain than happiness in the last decade (and while I have hope for this year, like I said in many years past I didn't). But I'm a fan for life and I prefer to stick with the team no matter what.

I'm at a loss here to be honest.

I said, "I don't understand why some people think X." You've responded two ways, 1) to tell me that people who think X exist, and 2) explain that stance by telling me about people who think Y.

You said you have hope, so that right there disqualifies you as an example. I'm talking about people who are so miserable they hate all of it. Again, I've been as clear as I am able.

HA! Knew you'd do that. You KNOW I've addressed your point perfectly and now you're just looking for a way out. First and foremost, my previous post perfectly addressed the bolded part of your argument. Try arguing against that.

And didn't I already tell you multiple times that I didn't have hope with the Dolphins in previous years? Yup I did, but you choose to act like I didn't. So that qualifies me perfectly. Keep going dude!

Not trying to butt in here, but I think Fin D is talking about a very small minority of people who criticize everything the team does... people who literally NEVER have anything positive to say, aren't hopeful for the future and it almost seems like they root against the team. ... your US Soccer analogy just doesn't seem match the type of "fan" he's talking about.

Yes, by acting like I kept misrepresenting you. How can you seriously claim anything as insane as that after post #45?

I already gave you reasons why some people prefer struggle over the easy way out.. check out my first responses, so stop acting like I ignored that. I already addressed the issue of not having hope and being miserable with the current state of affairs in US soccer, so don't act like I didn't do that.

I said we simply disagree on this issue.. you tell me no we actually agree, it's just me misrepresenting you. LOL Total dishonesty in a debate there dude.

Please butt in. You tell me where I didn't address his points. Clearly I addressed the bolded part in post #45. He never said anything about rooting against the team. He's talking about people who root for the team but are miserable and have no hope. I addressed all that.

Oh, and everyone I've seen here has had SOMETHING positive to say about the team btw..

Eh, it's hard to put a finger on it, much less explain it in words, but I'm pretty sure I know the type of people he's talking about, and from what I've seen, you're not one of them, not even when it comes to the US National Soccer team. It just seems like you guys are talking about two different types of people.

You said nothing in that ridiculous crap that was different than you said before. You kept rehashing the same ridiculous point that doesn't really address my point. I even told you to let it go if you were gonna keep saying the same same ridiculous crap again. You didn't. You made no new point/observation/anything, then you started patting yourself on the back for winning some stupid game (I already told I wasn't playing) that we weren't playing. That is insane.

This has nothing to do with preferring struggle, because many of these people became fans when we were good. I said it was about being stubborn about tradition, and you said you'll root for X cause you always did. Well, no **** Sherlock.

So, I say again, you don't understand my point else you'd stop with your ridiculous line of thought on it that I told you was incorrect from your first ridiculous post about it.

OK.. you've already proven enough dishonesty to me. It's time to cut this out between us. It's the third time that's happened. One more time and you'll be the first person on ignore. Seriously, I said this in previous "debates" with you, but you are literally the ONLY person I have no respect for during a debate on this forum. You have cute responses sometimes, but man.. the dishonesty is too much. I'm done now on this topic with you at least.

To me it looks like you're talking about people who are fans and actually root for the team, even if, deep down, they know there is no chance.

Fin D seems to be talking about people who constantly nag because nothing is ever good enough... even if the team is showing consistent signs of progress and a lot of reasons for optimism, they still would rather criticize at every opportunity... it almost seems like they would rather the team tanked the season just so that they can brag about having been right.

If you can just confirm that, it would be helpful. It would also be helpful if you can confirm I addressed the issues he actually stated. If you think otherwise, please provide evidence.

Here you go again..... I really feel insulted by your post, referring to the less intelligent older folks...Dude, you are really hung up on yourself..get over it... I will sit next to you almost blindfolded and you will get upset because I will get the play call right before the snap...I have been watching football since I was 4 years old Greg and I will be 55 and I have always enjoyed games with all of my family and friends but are die-hard dolfans...I also think we are all learning analytics together because it has not been used for very long. I get Upset when they lose, but as I get older it is much easier..usually an hour or two unless it's the JETS.I am not going to question anyone's fandom as everyone entitled to their own pace.
Greg, I love football, and I love the Miami Dolphins and will until I die. I am also learning as the game evolves just like you or the next fan and I will learn until the day I die. I have really come to the fact that you are a good person, but please, keep age out of the equation when discussing what our teams need, or how they will do etc..you might just be surprised my friend.
