Make your prediction here. After the starter against the Jets is officially announced, we'll see how many of us were dead wrong. And which of us are lucky guessers... Please vote for who you think will be the opening day starter.
The coaching staff puppets will likely go with experience so I'm think it's McCown's job to lose provided he doesn't chainsaw himself again. Calling Henne not very mobile is an understatement. The guy requires a dominant OL like the one Michigan had to make a throw. And he's got one of the slowest releases I've ever seen, it's like watching slow-mo. The guy just reminds me of the older Drew Bledsoe.
I voted Beck. I also have a question. Under weaknesses, Beck's age is included. Is his age really a weakness within the context of this poll? For that matter is it really a weakness at all? I could understand reservations before the draft, but at this point it's almost like saying that McCown's age is also a weakness.
I have to go with McCown to start the season but not to finish it. The reason he will start is because he is the most NFL ready and is the conservative pick which is the way this regime seems to lean.
I think Beck starts. If anything, we will see McCown. I don't see Henne on the field this season unless there's an injury.
If history is to be the judge, they'll be uber-conservative. Heck, Parcells didn't want to start Tony Romo until he pretty much had no choice and under pressure from Jones. If Quincy Carter didn't succumb to substance abuse charges, Romo would've either been handed to the Saints for a 3rd rounder or unceremoniously cut. I think McCown will be starting until he really reeks (like under 40 QB rating), which is possible, at which point Beck could likely receive first dibs.
Um yeah that's pretty much it from my point of view too. What I'll add too that is that Beck will follow McCown so that Henne can be groomed as long as possible (because lets face it he's the eventual starter-that's why he was drafted). Now if Beck stinks it up then Henne will come in but either way McCown won't go wire to wire.
No it shouldn't be listed as a weakness. Neither of the weaknesses listed for Beck are an issue. His main weakness is that he seems slow to adjust to the speed of the game. While he became an excellent college QB it took him a couple of years to do so.
I agree with the first part but not the part in bold. We passed on Henne with our first 2nd round pick and only took him with our other 2nd as a fall back when the guy we wanted was taken two spots before our selection. (Parcells' long time friend Gil Brandt reported on Sirius radio that the Dolphins were targeting a running back that was taken two spots before our pick and that Parcells told him that was the only guy he was disappointed that they missed out on. A review of the draft showed that only one running back was taken two spots before our pick, Ray Rice.) I agree that McCown is unlikely to go wire to wire. After that hopefully Beck or Henne shows enough promise that we can forego any QB drafting (except for maybe a late round flyer) for a couple of years or more.
I think it's going to be McCown. I know it's very early but Beck has struggled mightily so far and is clearly losing this competition to McCown and possibly Henne as well. To leapfrog McCown, he would really have to blow the doors off of this competition the next week or so, and I just don't think he has the talent to do that.
I think McCown will start with Beck as back up also. We don't need stellar numbers from our QB so, just steady play without turnovers and the occasional third down completion for first down to keep the drive going. McCown could very well last the year as the starter, at least until there is no chance of making the playoffs and then we may see Beck/Henne. I feel Beck will remain #2 all year, unless McCown really messes up. Now, I would love Beck to start and play well, I just don't know if he will show enough in Camp to do that. I am pulling for him though.
I think most of us can agree at this point its between McCown and Beck for week one. It'll just come down to who performs better in the next week and a half in camp.
Beck will prob. start the 1st half. Then Tony will put in McClown after John struggles to score points or for that matter, move the Off. Sounds sad, but I can see that unfolding IMO.
I don't think the coaching staff will have had enough time to properly evaluate Beck and Henne by the time the season rolls around, which means that they'll turn to the veteran in McCown. I would expect that McCown starts the season, plays somewhere between mediocre and above expected for the first 8 to 12 games of the season. Beck or Henne (whoever has won the grudge match between them) then finishes out the remainder of the year. If it's Beck, it's an open competition again starting in training camp next year, while if it's Henne, Beck is quietly shown the door in the offseason.
This is really tough...Beck is notoriously a slow starter...He's got the best upside of the three guys, but will Tunaland give him enough time to adjust to the game ?? I doubt it...I think Beck's fate was sealed the day the Tuna was hired...I voted for Beck but that was because that's who I'd like to see in there, but my best guess is that McClown gets the start this year, Beck will be the number 2 and Henne will be in direct competition next season with McClown...Beck will be unceremoniously dumped by Tunaland during the next offseason... Of course, this is assuming that none of the three guys separate themselves in the next 3 weeks...
