They can but they obviously won't. Rich Paul has always been a parasite and the NBA should put an end to that embarrassment of an organization.

Seems like a good negotiator to me. Either way, agents inherently are parasitic.

Not really, no. One year rental and they literally need a body to play center as they had no one. Kobe and Hibbert come off the books next year and that is over $40 million. So you either hang onto him for the season, assess how he did and sign him for a reasonable contract moving forward, trade him mid year for a team that needs center help for a playoff push, or simply let him walk with zero lost on the Lakers part. No risk at all for Mitch Kupchak.

In other words, they didn't trade for Hibbert to compete in the West. They traded for him for the future considerations it gives L.A.

And for what it is worth...The Lakers now have the best center in L.A....ha!

Well thats not saying much and honestly Glen Davis has more offensive talent than Hibbert.. As pathetic as that sounds it is true.

Don't get me wrong. I loathe Dan Gilbert and love that this is the bed he made for himself. I just see the way his people go about their business and I think it's so slimy.

All that talk about being big players in free agency and going after the best available big men...... to end up trading for Roy Hibbert because everyone else spurned them, and going into the season with prospects once again looking mighty grim, yeah, I'd say it was desperate.

No one's going to trade mid year for Roy Hibbert and his $15M contract lol. Certainly not a playoff contender.

Now that I really got a chance to re-watch that Heat-Pacers summer league game, I came away with some impressions:

    1. James Ennis is working hard to add to his game, and I think summer league coaches are trying to get him to do that. They want him to be more comfortable handling the ball and making decisions, and he's fighting harder on defense and under the basket. He looks stronger. The problem is the guy is Edward Scissorhands when he's trying to handle the ball. It just looks ugly and dangerous.

    2. Willie Reed actually looks pretty good. I was impressed.

    3. Unrelated: Myles Turner was REALLY impressive to me. And from what I've seen of Stanley Johnson, he's also impressive.

    4. Tyler Johnson is playing with much more confidence like he's an old vet out there. Problem is he's still a short dude whose specialty is attacking the rim.

    5. Justise Winslow kind of just played solid. You can see how if his number isn't called he could get lost in the shuffle and not end up doing much on the score sheet. Good decisions, good effort, good all-around skill set. But his ending up with stats is something that sort of just happens organically, didn't leave a lasting impression on me this game.

    6. Josh Richardson on the other hand, he was flashy...especially late in that 3rd quarter and the beginning of the 4th quarter. He had a run of real dominance where he was affecting everything on both ends of the floor. This guy continues to intrigue me because he's an improving defender that can pick pockets and block shots, has GREAT speed and length, and when you get right down to it he handles the ball really well. He's flying around the rim, fantastic vertical, and he's got the same straight ahead speed as Tyler Johnson. When he starts being comfortable on an NBA court, I think he's going to play. I don't see fatal flaws in his game, and I see an intriguing combo of length/speed/ball handling.

Justice Winslow plays the best defense I have seen from a rookie since Dwyane Wade.

Check his cuts to the basket as well. Very polished offensive game for a rookie.

Josh Richardson is great on defense, although not as technically sound as Winslow. His shot has a hitch in it. Love his aggresiveness.

But Winslow was a standout for me.

They are clearly punting to next season. That is exactly what this move shows. Personally speaking, I wanted no part of Aldridge and didn't understand the infatuation L.A. had with him, other than maybe Kobe demanding they take a run at him. I wouldn't have minded Deandre as I think he would pair nicely with Julius Randle up front, to go with D'Angelo Russel and Jordan Clarkson in the backcourt, long term. But I understand his reasons for going to Dallas.

Everyone else wasn't worth going after, really. Kevin Love was never leaving Cleveland, Greg Monroe certainly isn't the answer. Robin Lopez? I prefer The Knicks giving him tens of millions of dollars as opposed to The Lakers.

Los Angeles went all in for LMA and didn't get him (again, I am relieved). Once that domino fell, Mitch and Company have done the right thing and filled the roster with a big man (Hibbert) who comes off the books next year, and signed Lou Williams to come off the bench and give the team a little bit of depth, along with Nick Young. I have a feeling they are moving Kobe to SF and planning on using Clarkson and Russell together in the back court this year. If that works out, with Williams coming off the bench, then they have a decent guard rotation that they can play with.

And a ton more money to use next year to chase any bigs that are available, as well as wing players.

I don't mind the Hibbert trade at all. Lakers have no risk involved with him.

Btw Ck, Heat seems to acknowledge that TJ is short (6'-3") for a SG, and have gone to exclusively playing him as a PG this summer league

    Fair enough.

Though if they were going to throw away the season like they surely will now because they have almost no shot to make the playoffs in the West, would it not have been better to really throw it away instead of half-assing it like now and likely guarantee they lose the lottery pick to the Sixers?

Thought there'd be more progress there. But yeah, I mean he puts it on the floor in any sort of traffic and forget it. Can't have ball-handling be such a liability for a wing guy.

Tyler Johnson's move to PG is a good one. Let him add some other pieces to his game and scare defenses with his speed and handle. Then his ability at the rim will be more of an added bonus than a necessity. He's 6'2" (or he was at the Combine) and his specialty isn't just finishing in the paint like Goran, it's specifically attacking the rim. I'd have no issue with TJ if he could finish plays the way Goran can.

Ennis has such bad handle it's frustrating because he could be so good.

Trying to temper myself on Josh Richardson but it's tough because I don't really question his ability to be dangerous on offense due to his combination of speed, jumping ability and handle. He's going to get to the free throw line a lot just by challenging defenders and getting to the paint. And he's a good free throw shooter. Point being this is how I see him as a player, and yet what he's showing off is that he could be a defensive dynamo in addition to all that. He had four steals and two blocked shots today. If that's what he is, the kid has a future, IMO.

Justise Winslow's defense is very good as well but his overall basketball IQ on both offense and defense is what is impressing me most about him at the moment. There's good and bad with that. You get your top 10 pick into Summer League and you kind of want him to show off what a dynamically talented guy he is. Just a thought. But at least you know he can play right away.

Interesting stuff today. I don't know if you can trust Ennis at this point. Year 3 with the organization, Deng back, drafted two wings, not sure there's a great place or room for him here. It's tough, but of all the things to be this bad with...ergh. So frustrating. Tyler Johnson is so fun in the Summer League where the game isn't as tight and his raw athleticism can show. The highlight dunks are nice, but you want to see him keeping the offense flowing more, hitting guys on time, etc. I think he'll be a more consistent player this year, hopefully a better decision-maker. Like we saw with Winslow today, oddly enough; his feel, vision, and passing instincts are just excellent. Shot wasn't falling, but he still found ways to be a playmaker, even if guys weren't exactly finishing off the dish lol.

Tomorrow, I think, we'll see Winslow vs. Stanley Johnson!

Lakers have no draft pick next year, so it really doesn't matter whether they tank bad, or tank through the attrition of seeing what their young guns can do.

Although reports are now flying that they have signed Brandon Bass, who is a solid player. Depending on the terms, I am not sure what to think of that. Adding him to a good team would make sense. Adding him to a rebuilding one...does not.

Rumor is they are trying to rid themselves of Ryan Kelly, Robert Sacre and Nick Young. If Mitch can do that after drafting D'Angelo Russell to pair with Clarkson and Randle...I am a content Lakers fan, all things considered.

I haven't had a chance to watch summer league but what I remember from college is that he is very aggressive to the basket. He looks big for a small forward and huge for a SG. He uses his size to bulldoze his way to the rim. He's got excellent upper body control and hands to finish the drive. He has a decent cross over to beat his defender. I am curious to see how that's translated to summer league so far.

He's similar to James in that regard. Just attacks the basket like a bull. People bounce off of him and the contact doesn't stop him from finishing. Winslow doesn't jump as well. He finishes with layups rather than dunks, but otherwise the similarity is there.

I think technically, yes. But there is simply no way that was going to happen. If management is smart, they force Byron Scott to play Russell, Randle, Tarik Black and Clarkson, (and maybe Robert Upshaw if he makes the team) on the first and second units along with Kobe, Lou Williams, Hibbert and Brandon Bass. Let them lose and learn together and figure out who is worth keeping around next season for when you go chase the free agents.

Because at least then you can tell the free agents, with some confidence, that you have a plan in place that has a forward direction.

I do like the four guard rotation of Clarkson, Russell, Bryant and Williams. Obviously the strength of the team, if you want to call it that.

The front court is...not very good. But that can change if Randle becomes what people think he will be, and again, if Robert Upshaw/Tarik Black can make the squad and contribute defensively.

Lakers are one more good trade away from freeing up deadweight and having a semblance of a bench/youth for next season.

Now watch them flush it down the toilet and sign Antoine Walker, A'm'A'R'E' Stoudemire and Kurt Rambis's glasses, just to hurt my feelings.

I agree. On a per 36 minute pace last year he averaged 13ppg/9rpg/3apg/2steals/2.5 blocks. This is the first time since Charles Oakley the Knicks had a real enforcer in the paint. Now hes just got to avoid fouling everything that moves.

Spurs might have serious PG issues. Parker is great while he's fit, but if his injury problems continue who'll be backing him up? Cory Joseph is now with the Raptors. Patty Mills is more a shooter than anything else. He's certainly not a threat to slash to the basket and he's not a great handler or distributor.

Curious to see what the Spurs GM Buford can come up with here.

Cory Joseph 5 for $30 is really bad as well.

Still some intriguing names out there. Gerald Green, David west.

Heat's going to have to be patient, but I think we can snag a bench upgrade soon.

Will they match up on one another? That would be interesting.

I have Justise Winslow with 29 points on 7 of 18 shooting (1 of 8 from three) with 5 rebounds, 7 assists, 4 steals, 0 blocks and 5 turnovers. He's 14 of 20 from the free throw line.

I have Stanley Johnson with 37 points on 15 of 22 shooting (2 of 5 from three) with 13 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals, 0 blocks and 2 turnovers. He's 5 of 10 from the free throw line.

These two are going to be compared to one another, rightly so as they play similarly and many thought Winslow should have been taken above Johnson. I think they're both good. It's obvious Stanley Johnson has had the better series of games thus far, though.

The free throw numbers are the key thing to me.

Winslow is already showing an ability to attack and get to the line.

He knows how to create contact and get calls. So even when he's not shooting well, he's making an impact.

I think he's been pretty terrific thus far and is going to be a good NBA player. That I'm certain of. Beyond that, we'll see, but there are traits that you really like.

Willie Reed has been the surprising guy to me thus far. Looks like a guy that can make the team.

On Richardson, there is something there. What exactly that will end up being, I'm not sure. At the very least, he will be a Sioux Falls all Star, lol.

As for vets, any word on JR Smith? Are the cavs just waiting to see who else they can get?

Is he a guy who will have to settle for the MLE or even Mini MLE?

He shouldn't be a starter, but the guy is a valuable sixth man.
