Yeah, the story came out years ago, but I guess its back in the news because of the book. The bit from the Oilers was sad and funny at the same time, though. Saban is just an awful human being, plain and simple.

No, but there have been many stories about it in the news this week. The tale of his wife being the one who pushed him out of Miami came out in the news way, way back. I don't remember if I read it in a Miami paper or on a national site, but it was out there years ago.

I wish his wife would have liked Miami better because if she did, I think we would already havewon the Super Bowl with Saban imho...although we were all very angry with him it does not take away from fact that he is a special talent in coaching..and I can really understand people not liking the city, Miami.

Yeah but the question was, was he lying when he said he was not taking the Bama job or did he just renege and change his mind. It was always the wife who pushed him out. But it sounds as if Saban, wanted out, but wanted to keep his word and then with the nudge from his wife, said eff it and went back on his word.

Doesn't make him a saint. But clarifies that.

*If true. It could be bending the truth by the author, or the person who told them. It could also be like the telephone game, where the story changes a little each time someone tells it. I lean towards his wife certainly wanting out, but Saban trying to use it as cover to save face.

Saban was a good defensive NFL coach and a great NCAA recruiter.

But there is/was no evidence given showing that he had any idea on how to lead or build a successful NFL offense. In just two seasons he passed on 2 HOF QBs right there for the taking.

Interesting about him having a shouting match with Zach Thomas. Unlike the kids in college football, some NFL players will yell right back at you. I'm sure he wasn't used to that at all. I think he's similar to coaches like Holtz and Spurrier, in that he's better suited as a college coach.

I disagree. Looking back, the FA signings he made were short term fixes and paired with his sub-par drafting, he very much responsible for setting up the 2007 season. Garbage.

Saban the Xs and Os coach is super bowl capable. Saban the GM probably not.

Haha, I don't think so dude. His drafts sucked and his FA pickups were worse. He knows he screwed that up and it made his decision easier to move knowing his talent pool he acquired would not have gotten it done

Saban's coaching style can take high schoolers and mold them into good college players. It can't however, work on an NFL veteran. The in-your-face screaming I personally witnessed at training camp was jaw dropping and embarrassing. How some players didn't drop him or his like-minded assistants on the spot is amazing. His management skill were even more atrocious, as he had the entire building walking on egg shells. From tattling spys in their midst, to needing permission to even talk to the POS, Nick Saban is a study in how to blow up an NFL franchise.

I wouldn't put it past Saban to put the blame on his wife. The truth is he wasn't a very good NFL head coach and he took the best offer he could to get out before eventually being fired as the Dolphins head coach in a year or two.

He is an outstanding college coach because he is an excellent recruiter. He is able to get the top recruits at Alabama and that is the reason he consistently has one of the top teams in the nation. As an NFL head coach, he was terrible when it came to the draft and the team regressed in his time with the Dolphins.

Some head coaches have the ability to coach at the professional level. Saban was NOT one of these coaches.

He was a good coach, but clearly a bad GM. He also had trust issues that would have prevented NFL success.

His wife not liking Miami was well known at the time, so that is not exactly ground breaking. Saban is a great college coach and his shtick works well with college age kids. Grown men however are not going to put up with his crap for long. His totalitarian style in the office was ridiculous as well, wrong kind of Little Debbies? Really? I also agree the guy was really bad at personnel too. Jason Allen? WTF?!

Agree totally with this. If Saban was genuinely a good coach, and good at developing NFL players the team he left behind would not have been one Camarillo catch and run away from 0-16.

I can't recall who the lineman was, but there was a report about one of Saban's players going into convulsions on the field. Everybody gets worried b/c this is obviously serious and the player was soon after airlifted to the hospital. Reportedly, while everybody else was showing reasonable human concern, Saban steps over the player completely oblivious. That incident was something I heard repeated often by players after Saban left. It clearly left an indelible mark. Saban may pretend to care about his players, but that incident revealed a complete lack of compassion. You hear about Saban getting into shouting matches with Zach (usually a coach's dream player) and you wonder how many players just saw Saban as a piece of crap person. He was obviously a brilliant football mind and the boss, but I doubt many would run through a wall for him. He's better off in college where youngsters are easier to fool and you only have to pretend to care for a short time.

Yeah, that was Jeno James and it wasn't on the field. Saban stepped over him because he was lying in the middle of the hallway convulsing after just coming inside the building from practice. The little douche had to step over him to go up the stairs to his office.

    You did?!

In both seasons under him our team was out of the playoff hunt by the beginning of November.

HE is the reason Drew Brees and/or Aaron Rodgers is not a Miami Dolphin. He's the defensive guru who overrdrafted Jason Allen because he played in the SEC. He was a trainwreck as this team's coach. His only accomplishment was putting together a top 10 defense and getting a DPOY season out of Jason Taylor. Both of which weren't too shabby before his arrival. Saban knows where he stands in the NFL and knows where he would stand in the NFL if he were to ever return.....hence the 0 interest on his part to return even though there'd be a dozen stupid enough organizations willing to grant him keys to the kingdom again

Players also know when the head coach just isn't good enough. Having Philbin return for this coming season is my biggest concern regarding this team in 2015.

White Tannebaum and Hickey have done a very good job of adding talented players to the roster. I just don't see the Dolphins being a playoff team as long as Philbin is the head coach. Hopefully Tannebaum will be able to entice a quality HC to take the job after the 2015 is over and the Dolphins once again fail to make the playoffs.

With a quality HC, the Dolphins could be a major SB contender for the next several years. Why Ross decided to keep Philbin for another year still is upsetting to me.

I always thought it was kind of interesting some of the names that were in Miami between 2005 and 2006:

    Nick Saban
    Dom Capers
    Jason Garrett
    Dan Quinn
    Mike Mularkey

Something should/could have come from that.

We haven't been a good organization so an individual even if talented rarely makes a difference. Saban had enough power that he could have been a difference maker, but he had a few fatal flaws.
