Balt has to make a decision soon too quickly they have 7 FA's to be.... Yanks can help them make that decision with a good showing starting today...
I think the owners like Cherrington too, which helps. Again he has a plan in place, which part of it is because of ownership, and I can't say I disagree with the plan but it just hasn't worked.
I'm now on the "Operation Tank" Bandwagon. Sox have the 4th worst record in baseball and hold the tie breaker with the Marlins and Phillies, although I think it will be incredibly hard to catch Philly, so let's try to get that 2nd or 3rd pick in a draft that's suppose to be pretty stacked.
I would be on board with that if I was a Sox fan.... I think you guys need to try and find a trade partner for either Tubby or Gamer (EEI called them that this morning hahaha) too......even if it means eating some money.....
I would dump Sandoval in a heart beat, even if you don't get anything back for him as long as the Sox can save some money it would be worth it. Hey do the Dodgers need a 3B? (Crap just remembered Coletti isn't the GM anymore).
From Gammons' article the other day: Imagine if Ben could have landed deGrom for Shoppach.... Could have been worse than Kazmir/Zambrano deal. Oh well.
He actually has a pretty team friendly contract. He's not going to be moved though so it's a moot point to even talk about.
Team friendly in the dollars per year but not friendly due to its length... 8 years/$110M (2014-21) signed extension with Boston 7/24/13, replacing final year and option in previous contract $1M signing bonus 14:$12.5M, 15:$12.5M, 16:$13M, 17:$15M, 18:$16M, 19:$15M, 20:$13M, 21:$12M Good luck with that!
Considering that right now in 2015 a free agent getting a qualifying offer from his team is around 15 million he back end of the contract is going to look like a steal if he's a positive WAR player. 99% of the time dollars go up as the contract goes on which makes it harder to move the player. The opposite is true, makes it easier to move.
All that is true however he is breaking down already.. seems he is constantly battling "nagging" injuries. I simply do not think he will be able to produce up to standards for much longer. Keep in mind i HATE long term contracts. I know its part of the game these days but it doesnt change my opinion on them.
I don't disagree with anything you said, especially when they extended him he was already signed for 2 or 3 more years.
Happy 11th Anniversary to the famous "Arod gets hit with a pitch, jaws at Arroyo, Varitek puts his mitt in his face, bench cleans, Kapler and Trot kill Tranyon Strutze, and Bill Mueller takes Mariano deep for a Sox comeback win that was the catalyst for the greatest comeback in sports history that lead to the 2004 WS title" game. Like everything, only this time it might actually be true, it's all Arod's fault. Yup just have to keep thinking happy thoughts at this point and treasure the memories. Also baseball was so much better and fun in 2004 when the Sox and Yankees legit hated each other.
And the Mets have called up Conforto and placed that bust Cuddyer and his crappy 700 ops on the DL where he belongs. Someone may actually get an extra base hit today.
Why arent the Mets involved in any trade talks for a bat. Even if its Cespedes at least he can get on base.
Oh where to begin.... The Coupons (Wilpons) have no money from the Madoff scandal. Alderson says he can take on payroll but so far hasnt shown the ability to do so. The one thing I will say is he (correctly) said the mets will not trade Harvey Syndergaared (Thor), Matz or Degrom. But no one seems to want anything else even though the Mets farm system is still in the upper echelon of the league even after the graduations of Thor, Matz and now Conforto. Oakland has (foolishly) rejected any of Fulmer, Nimmo or Rafael Montero for Zobrist who is a FA at years end. Everyone knows the Mets are desperate for a bat and based on what ive read are overvaluing their mediocre players. I can only imagine what SD is asking for Upton after what they paid for him. As for Cespedes in particular I have a belief that Illitch doesnt necessarily want to move him. He's 86 and his team is a stones throw away from being a contender again if they fill a couple of holes and resign Price at years end. Mind you money is no issue for Illitch. Upton and Cespedes are also rentals who are FA's at years end. As history has taught us you have to be careful what you give up in those deals and in the Mets case very careful because of payroll constraints as well as the fact that Alderson took over a pretty naked farm system and its taken some time to build it up. He wont get another chance to do that. My issue with Alderson is that hes great at making deals where he has leverage. Look at the Dickey deal (He got Syndergaard and D'Arnaud for a guy who was 37 at the time), sold off Beltran for Zach Wheeler and he got Dilson Herrera for rental Marlon Byrd. Hes done well when he has leverage. Look at his FA signings though...Cuddyer...bust. Jon Rauch and Frank Francisco...awful. Granderson...underperformed relative to the 16M per hes getting but good clubhouse guy and hes done ok. Is this someone who can identify a good hitter and fair market for a player when he doesnt have leverage? Im not so sure. Hes been around the game long enough but he hasnt won anything since the Bash Brothers in Oakland in the late 80's and back then his style was innovative and unique. Now....not so much. On one hand hes smart to come out and say he wont trade any of his 4 legitimate possible aces...on the other hand no one wants Jon Niese bad enough to give up the bat the Mets need. And the other problem is the Mets dont need just 1 bat....they need 2-3 at minimum.
Go to Amazon, type in Boston Red Sox 2004 World Series DVD, they have all 7 games from the 2004 ALCS and all 4 WS games vs. the Cardinals. Should get you caught up in no time.
Apparently the Padres really want to move Shields. Wonder if they would do a swap of Shields for Sanodval and money. SD was in on Pablo during the off season and unfortunately Will Middlebrooks hasn't worked out for them. While I don't think Shields would be a great fit in Fenway due to his fly ball rates, it gives them an innings eater and a leader on the staff that can help the younger guys coming up.
Multiple rumors connecting him to the Cubs, but we aren't going to give the Padres any of our top prospects for him because we can afford to take on his whole salary. I'm intrigued by the idea because Shields is good, but trading for him would likely prevent the team from signing one of the better FA SP this offseason, which is my preferred choice.
Read something that Cespedes has a clause in his contract that essentially prevents him being re-signed (or something similar). It didn't make a ton of sense, but essentially it said that if they do want Cespedes back next year, the Tigers actually pretty much have to trade him. Considering that Cespedes supposedly likes the Tigers, it could easily just be an end of year rental situation. I am personally intrigued by the Rangers (my local). They are potentially in on Hamels, but he has been sucking it up hard lately. Will see what his next start produces. They are potentially sellers on Gallardo and others. Frankly, I think this team has a decent core but serious flaws. Would love to see them move Moreland now while he is at his most valuable, and clear out Andrus/Beltre to restock the farm while clearing way for younger players. Moving Choo is a forgone, but they will need to eat a lot of the salary. Interesting thought, if they wanted to go for broke as sellers, Prince to Boston?
Don't see prince to Boston, that contract is pretty awful and doesn't jive with their philosophy.....plus he is going to take a big package to get him as well.... You guys losing Darvish really hurt, hate when pitchers get TJ...
Steve Cishek traded to the Cardinals. 1.39 era since losing his closer job with us in Miami. Good get for the Cardinals. My guess is some contender is going to get Latos soon.
Not just Darvish. Their entire pitching staff for like 2-3 years now has been a trainwreck of injuries. Matt Harrison, Colby Lewis, Derek Holland, Martin Perez, Alexi Ogando, Neftali Feliz, Darvish and more. Most of them (to this point) lost a lot of stuff in the injuries, especially Harrison/Lewis and the relievers turned starters Ogando/Feliz. Gallardo has been a revelation after a rough start though. Will be nice if they can flip him for some solid prospects. This isn't their year, so they need to be aggressive in setting up. Beltre is a must-trade imo, Andrus should be shipped out, and we need to capitalize on Moreland's hot season. Choo needs to go as well, though he (and Andrus probably) will require financial compensation to offload the contract. Andrus I think can return to all-star level though, I think he needs a change. Not sure if he is just too complacent or what, but he still has the skills. A Gallardo/Andrus package might intrigue the Dodgers if they really are not calling up Seager this season. Shame they won't give him up. As for Fielder, I see about a 2% chance of a trade with him, that was mostly me just throwing stuff at the wall. That contract is not gonna move unless someone is desperate.
Never going to happen. Bad body and even worse contract. Plus not sure he'd be able to handle the Boston media market.
Well thats good....now we can hopefully DFA mayberry and eric campbell. Get their 170 Ba's outta here
That's good he's hitting like that this year but that's 100 points over his career average and he's 31 and signed for $120 million/5 more years. Someone like that doesn't usually age well. That's a big risk.
I like Prince as an amazing fit for the Mets. Dude has shown he's capable but he's inconsistent. I wonder if the mets would be willing to take that contract on and if so what the cost prospect wise would be. Cecchini, Duda and a prospect...Marcos Molina would make sense for both. Purely speculation though.
Mets should just call up Bobby Bonilla at this point, they are still paying him and I bet he can do better than Mayberry.
