With the start of the regular season just over a month away, I wanted to get some perspective.. I just got back from a trip to New York where I witnessed a close uncle of mine literally shrivel to death from cancer. His son (my cousin) was in immense pain and we talked about what he had to look forward too and we kept going back to the start of the NFL season. This kid is a die hard Cowyboys fan living in Brooklyn.

It got me thinking that football is so much more than a 4 hour sporting event. It allows you to totally disconnect from all the stresses of every day life and let out unbridled rage, excitement, hope and fun on a lazy Sunday. For me the start of football season was a welcome distraction (or obsession) when things weren't exactly going as planned in life.

Anyone else feel the same way?

Too much of this the last 30 years of Dolphin football.

But yeah, if you allow it, fandom can be a very important part of who you are.

Man, do I agree with you there...for me, it is that as well.....I mean, I have loved the Dolphins now going on mine, and their 50th year...the joy, excitement, the pain, everything that they have meant to me.....and a big part of that is what you mentioned...just the ability to put all of life's troubles on the back burner for 3-4 hours and yes, to let out the anger, excitement etc that every day life brings is invaluable to me. I also enjoy getting to discuss and watch the Dolphins with my son, who proudly, is a third generation Dolphins fan, which started with my mother whom we lost 2 years ago(rip mama)...Go Dolphins!!!

I used to be more into it. I used to schedule job around games. Friends and family knew not to bug me unless they wanted to come watch. I became a fan in 82 (when I was 8), so there's nothing outside of family that has been my life longer than being a Dolphin fan.

But honestly, now that I'm very happily married, I care waaaaaaaaaaay less. I mean I still care, but I'd rather record the game and watch it after the wife goes to bed (and ff thru huddles and commercials) than schedule my life around the game. I used to panic when the game wasn't on TV, now I'm like, "oh well".

My lessened passion has nothing to do with the team either, its just I'm happy in my life and I don't need the escape that football brings.

It becomes part of your identity around people you know, especially if you live outside Florida. You revel in those wins against big market teams like the Pats or Steelers. As a Miami fan you fly so far under the radar of the "big boys" so that you don't often get into arguments with fans of other teams.

Sometimes I feel like we are the nuclear submarine of AFC East. Sure we hate everyone else but the Jest, Balls and Deflators are too busy openly hating each other in their geographic proximity that we just sneak by undetected, ready our salvo of cruise missiles aimed at their end zones. With the Dolphins you can enjoy the heated rivalries and really get into it but always walk away from a game knowing you are a tad more civilized and refined than the animals wailing in the stands at Foxborough.

Wouldn't change at thing, except maybe SBs VI, XVII and XIX.

It means Fall is approaching. It means looking forward to Sunday instead of dreading the work week gate keeper of days! It means crock pot food, beers, yelling, excitement, fantasy football and fun! It means water cooler debates on who is having the better season, it means pissed off Mondays or jubilation all week! It means dusting off the jerseys in the closet and showing off pride in the heart of another football city, whether we are good or bad (mostly we're bad).....it means history, memories, teaching, tradition, friends and family! I love football, this is my favorite time of year!!!!

To me football basically consumes my life. I enjoy it though. If i'm not watching it, then i'm talking about it with my co-workers or checking out my fantasy team and match ups for the next week. It's literally on my mind 7 days a week.

Exactly! Its an excuse to see friends, grab a drink, talk some smack and engage yourself in something you truly enjoy. Even when I feel pessimistic about the teams chances its a chance for me to look forward to the rebuilding process and think about what could be if we do X, Y and Z as far as coaches, player acquisitions etc.

I just love that time of year because as a sports geek its like everything happens at once....NFL season starts, baseball pennant race is still going/playoffs, NBA, NHL, College football is in full swing...best time of year.

Like Deej said, it's an obsession. I think especially for us here on the site because we take it to a whole other level. The casual fan doesn't know the things we know about our team and even connect with others via forums. We know where the 3rd string Guard went to college, my friends always break my balls for knowing all this **** lol. It's not only the game but what the game brings, the tailgates, the excitement to escape for that whole Sunday and the smack talk with your boys. I love it, even though as long as I have been a fan it has been nothing but heart ache. It will be just that much more rewarding when we finally break through because we've been there for it all. Can't wait!!!

Oh, and I forgot to mention.....usually, when October gets here it means the end of the hot, humid weather that everyone covets, except for us Native "Crackers"...We have been in it's stranglehold since early April, and are having the hottest summer since, I think they said 1938? (Oh, that must have been when global warming started..Lol) And for those who are not aware of what a "Florida Cracker" is can either ask me, or review a little Fl. History...fact I bet most don't know.....the "Florida Cracker" is where the word "Cowboy(s)" originated...Yes, way before Texas or anywhere else..

My hope for this year is for all of our dedicated fans who were not around when the Dolphins dominated the AFC East for years, and the Whole AFC for 3 years with 2 SB Victories, finally get to see our Dolphins start dominating the AFC again and Winning Super Bowls again, and I think that this year, our team and wins start trending up again, and who knows, if the ball bounces the right way, there is a chance that we can get there and win it all this year. Let's Go Fins !!

After my family and my health, the Fins and the NFL are the the most important thing in my life. That sounds silly to some, but its a lifelong obesession. Not being able to watch the game live is honestly painful. It kills me inside, and I'm so glad that I'm able to watch them all now. As an adult, I don't get to dedicate the weekend, from Friday night through bedtime Sunday, to football the way that I once did, but I do generally get to focus on the Fins game while its on, and when it is, its like there's nothing else happening in the world.

Life can be hard sometimes. We all go through stretches where nothing can go right and life just beats you down. Football allows a great escape from the struggles of the outside world. That's why I hate when people say "it's just a game."

Sure, it is just a game, but when you turn on the news and see all the chaotic, tragic events that occur all around us on a daily basis, football is there to take you away into another world. Like anyone else, I've gone through hard times where I thanked God that I had the Dolphins to hide away with.

Football may be "just a game", but it's a wonderful game to get lost in when you desperately need a break from the world. That's one of many reasons why I love the game.

If football season [plus the draft] could be patented as a drug, Prozac would take a large hit in sales. Remember how you felt waking up the mornings of your birthday when they actually mattered?.... how you felt Xmas morning before you *earmuffs CashInFist* learned Santa wasn't real? -that's Sunday morning for me during football season. Television from the bedroom gets drug out to join his brother in the living room. One plays Sunday Ticket's Game Mix- up to 8 games at once. The other plays whichever best game is on- always reserved for Miami of course.

Laptop sits on the ottoman in front of me with my 2 or 3 FF teams up [notably our awesome ThePhins League]. Gotta admit- tracking my fantasy team throughout the day and following my players on Game Mix is as enjoyable as watching the Dolphins. Much thanks go out to Boik for introducing me to FF BTW, something he probably regrets now that I'm the reigning points champion 4 years running. :tongue2:

The occasion wouldn't be complete without a good beer and Snyder's Honey Mustard & Onion pretzel pieces on the stand to my left. Now that Oskar Blues brewery has expanded to NC, those tasty suds will likely be Dale's Pale Ale. Best canned beer around..... but as one of the prettiest looking ones I've ever seen, it absolutely must be poured for full appreciation.

Weather's typically beautiful- summer heat & humidity disappear, windows and doors get opened, no listening to the A/C kicking in, breeze can be felt again, peaceful sound of chirping birds everywhere and squirrels draggin' their nuts through the leaves [we have 3 pecan trees in the back yard]. It's the time of Halloween decorations and the holiday itself.... gorging on a Thanksgiving dinner.... a week spent lighting up the entire house & yard for Christmas and grinning at whatever catastrophe I just assembled, then embarrassingly dressing up like Santa on the 24th to entertain all the kids.... followed by new year's eve and the promise of a better upcoming year than the one whose candle just blew out. Football season is total relaxation away from an otherwise stressful Monday through Saturday and life in general.

If I'm lucky, for a few hours I'll have my 2 and half year old granddaughter plopped beside me for some bonding time [literally as I'm tying this Emily's screaming for my attention to watch a doe and her fawn eating mulberries in the back yard. gotta pause momentarily to join her]. She gets excited about the games and was already shouting "football" and "Dolphins" last year at this time. Hopefully she'll have more opportunity to wear her Dolphins polo shirt/dress this season, made possible by our very own VanDolPhan who graciously awarded prizes out of his own pocket concluding last year's GM League. Something tells me you won't find that level of brotherhood & selflessness at Finheaven. Unfortunately I'll be *bracing myself for the ensuing snickering* wearing an aqua Brandon Marshall jersey, minus the name plate of course :pity:. Waiting for the day a player makes 19 relevant again, lol. Unfortunately the financial strain from my other granddaughter's lengthy hospital stay means sacrificing an update to my Dolphins wardrobe, but thankfully I'm the only one who has to see that raggedy thing so it's all good. Emily's great grandmother recently sent her a Dolphins cheerleader outfit that she got a steal on, previous model of course..... and can I just say- those shades of aqua & orange are nut kicks to my eyeballs now that they've fully acclimated to the awesome new colors. Whoever picked out those two abominations, man that's like hiring Cousin Eddy as your interior decorator.

Football season is our Jelly of the Month Club- the gift that keeps on givin'. With how stressful and hectic my life is right now, I probably wouldn't make it through the year w/o it.... so basically it's become my salvation.

    Is that 6 paragraphs? :shifty:

First of all, haven't missed a Fins snap since 93. Since I became a subscriber to the NFL ticket in 96 it's all the other football games too all day Sunday, food and beer. And Thursday night and Monday night too. PHUCK church, family, friends, kids and everything else during football season

I have gone through different stages as a Dolphin fan. I was born in Maryland, so when the Dolphins first came to Miami in 1966 I became a fan of the team since they were in the AFL, but I still was a bigger fan of the NFL Baltimore Colts during the first few years the Dolphins played.

While I attended several games over the first two years, I first purchased season tickets and became a full fledged Dolphin fanatic once I got out of the military in 1972 and returned to South Florida. By that time Shula had the Dolphins at the top of the pack in the NFL and and many of the players whom I had rooted for as a young Colts fan were no longer on the Colts roster.

Over the next several decades, the Dolphins were my top priority during football season. We never took a vacation during football season unless we were traveling to an away game to watch the Dolphins play. We eventually went to over 30 away games played by the Dolphins, including the regular season game they played in London in 2007.

During those years I would enjoy the victories for a few hours but the losses would take me several days to get over. Each week during the season seemed like one long wait for the next game and I constantly came home after going to the games unable to speak because I had yelled throughout the game and would eventually lose my voice. I think my wife and daughter actually liked that part of me being a fan the most.

The last decade has certainly changed my view of the Dolphins from what it was during their glory years. First as I grew older, I recognized that getting so upset with the losses actually wasn't good for my health. I began to become more realistic in my expectations for each season as I realized the Dolphins just didn't have the talent or coaching to contend for a playoff spot. While I continued to go to the games, I soon realized that I was over a loss before I even drove home, which usually took me about an hour.

Two years ago my wife and I finally moved out of South Florida and settled here in Maui. While I remain a Dolphin fan and will always root for them, I no longer plan my travels around their games. We frequently fly into Seattle to visit our Grandchildren, my daughter and son-in-law and last year I was on a plane while one of the Dolphin games was being played. I never would have done that 20 years ago. Here in Maui, most of the Dolphin games come on at 7:00am or 8:00am on Sunday morning, depending on if daylight savings time is still in effect or not. So I get up early and watch the game and usually tee off on the golf course before noon, whether they win or lose.

I still want them to win every game and I still get upset when they make a dumb play or a stupid coaching decision. I just don't let the frustration of the moment linger like I did when I was younger. Watching other teams play is also not that important to me anymore. I'll watch another game if I have nothing else to do at that time, but the only game I really have any interest in anymore is the game involving the Dolphins.

I do miss going to Dolphin games and I plan to attend a game the next time they play in Seattle. I look forward to this coming season, but win or lose, I will survive the season and continue to be thankful for the many years I was able to attend the games when the Dolphins were a dominant force in the NFL. Hopefully they will achieve that status again in the years to come and I will be sitting here in Maui and cheering them on. I will then head to the golf course as soon as the game is over.

What football is to me? It's a way of life I inherited from my father. I remember in in 72 and 73 him bringing me to the orange bowl to see the Miami Dolphins. My father lived and breathed the Miami Dolphins. When we moved to Maine in 76 he never once lost any of his love of the Dolphins. I remember him anticipating his newest addition of Dolphin digest coming in the mail. Once he read it it was passed between me my brother and yes my sister. Every time the Phins were on Tv I would go over and watch the game with him. His passion for the Dolphins is what defined all of us as football fans. A few years ago we lost our father and we didnt just have a normal funeral, We had a Miami Dolphin themed funeral, let me tell you it was really cool even all flowers were dyed aqua and orange. He was cremated with his favorite dolphin hate and blanket. I am proud to walk in his steps as a dolfan and my passion for my team defines me because that is what football means to me.

Wow...what a massive question, with so many possibilities...

Football, to me, means the Miami Dolphins...period. Since I was about 5 or 6, I've bled Aqua...I don't know why I even picked the team as my favorite, possibly because I loved the show "Flipper" as a kid. I caught a MASSIVE amount of crap growing up in the Bay Area, rooting for and wearing gear for the Dolphins. But my cousin, brother, and I all picked and have stuck with the Dolphins since then (they both still live in the Bay Area). Got bullied, beat up, at school AND at home for it...but never even feigned to not love my team.

The day after we lost to the Whiners in the Super Bowl, I proudly wore my Dolphins jacket and hat to school...amongst the hundreds of band-wagoneers who all of a sudden have loved the 49ers since birth (even though I never saw more than 1 or 2 kids in school sporting 'Niner gear before they won a Super Bowl). I actually got in fights for arguing Marino > Montana in high school...won one, lost a couple, still love my team.

Football basically means the fall season, and my cousin, brother and I out throwing the ball around for HOURS at a time...fully bundled up in the cold. Thanksgiving Day was ALWAYS all about football in my family, when we went to other relatives' homes for lunch/dinner/etc. There'd always be tons of kids showing up, so we'd always get good pick-up games going in some of the neighborhoods. We'd play right up to food time, then right after, until it was too dark.

Nowadays, football is still all about the Dolphins for me (as you all can easily tell). I've raised two die-hard Dolphins kids, and even converted my former-Packer-fan wife over (she's from Wisconsin, it's kinda in their DNA...it was hard). Whenever we win a game, my wife says, "woohoo, I don't have to get beat today," referring to the stigma of Neanderthal football fans beating their wives when their team loses...have never laid a hand on a woman, and never will (just putting that out there). We all gear up in our Dolphins stuff early on Sunday, watch pre-game shows and the Dolphins game every week...usually we'll mix in a few other games too, but the Dolphins game is mandatory muster (unless you're at work). Spending their formative years in Texas, my kids grew to be A&M fans also, so they loves them some Tannehill. We drive through his hometown several times a year, to visit family in west Texas...and it always sparks good Dolphins conversation.

This site and several of the good folks here have helped me to know more and keep up with the team, much more than I would've ever thought. I can't imagine going through a season without this board anymore. Y'all rock, and thanks for making this place what it is.

It's all about the Dolphins...can't put it any simpler than that.

Its almost like the Dolphins and I are siblings. Born the same day to start and in each others lives since. Key points in my life remembered alongside events in football. Super Bowl party for my 6th birthday, football field cake w/ Dolphins and Redskins figures on it. Dad was a big skins fan, he had to clean my room for a month when he lost the bet. Driving to Texas for G-Pas funeral, listening to the 81 AFC championship game in the car searching for stations as we crossed Louisiana, grief from one event helping with the other. Mom getting married for the second time to a guy from Denver, seeing Marino play live in Denver in his first preseason game. Every time I lost a Marlin for years I would tell the other Captains "we Buffaloed that one". My Jerseys with my daughters names and birthdays. 2008 unemployed for 9 months and Zach13 (my brother from another mother) comping me a Club membership, the brightest spot in a REALLY depressing yr. My first live game in Miami vs the jesters last year, Christmas at Disney World with the Girls

Mostly to me football is community, friendship and an expression of America. We have a melting pot of all colors and creeds, good people and bad. A bunch of egos fueled by materialism destroying themselves as a team to accomplish an objective that is nothing but an ideal. But it brings people together and creates bonds that last lifetimes. Walking around Safeway getting groceries today in the Heart of Seahawk land with my Zach Thomas jersey on and people just start talking to you about football. Butcher says we are going to have the best D in the League this year, he's a niners fan. Kid at the register is a Dolphins fan, didn't recognize the jersey but knew who it was when I told him. I had to ask the manager to be sure the guy wearing the Vinny Testaverde jersey (no kidding!) washed his hands before he touched peoples food.

it clearly has become the most important 6 months of the year for me, its at my appartment for years now, around a party of 6 most sundays, with 4 TV's set up to see all the games live, then there is also fantasy football during the week and news and stuff, i have broken up with at least 3 girl friends because during that football season i really have no time for other stuff than dolphins football

That's next year brah!!!!!! I'll buy you a local micro brew or twelve. Last time the Dolphins were here in 2008 I got to go and sat in the Hawks nest. There were easy 10k Dolphins fans there. Not in the Hawks nest, I was DEFINITELY a minority there! Seahawks fans are passionate for sure but they are good sports I've found. Tickets are going to be $$$$$. It may be cheaper to go see them in San Diego this year.

Agreed. No matter what side of the debate we fall on, I love you all.

As a Dolphins fan? Disappoint.. Depression.. Hopelessness..
As a Gamecocks fan? Disappoint.. Depression.. Hopelessness..

But yet, I still love the game and my extremely disappointing teams.

As a fan it means the change of season, I love the fall and October is my favorite month of the entire year. Football to me is transformation of the seasons.

As a Dolphins fan it's hope, more hope, some hype, then a major injury in preseason, a 4-2 record, a 4-4 record, a 7-4 record, an 8-8 finish.

October truly is the best month. Weather wise and sports wise, you can't beat it.

Of course!!! In fact, Me and you (you and I for the English teachers) may have to meet up in the parking lot before the game for a brief ceremony to burn sacrificial herbs to beseech the football God's benevolence on this day.

  39. for me its an emotional roller-coaster ride. i have turned ito a ritual. when they are out leavig everything they have on the field im watching it and leaving everything i got with them. people around me thinks im absolutelt nuts.

i typically taunt fans of our oppents. i nevr bet money on them cause i have a silly superstition and think its a jinx but i do make the craziest bets with people. i tell them i dont want thor money i want their pride.

for instance i have a freind who is from buffalo and he owns a pizza joint. everyone from buffalo hangs out there for all buffalo sports. i show up thete when we play each other in full miami garb and taunt his customers. it has gotten ugly more than once. i ama known aggitater there. so anyhow a few years ago i bet him that the loser had to get u on his bar and sing the other teams ight song for his customers. when you bet like that you have a vested interest in your team winning.

When we dominated San Diego last year I felt physically and mentally euphoric. It's like I was waiting twenty years for the team to have a dominant game.
