I tend to think if he's out there catching passes, it isn't "levity" as Philbin described it- they're exploring if he at least can keep defenses honest if he's on the field in passing situations.

Mitchell might have real value at the position. He still fits within the profile of athleticism you need a lead blocker to at 300+ lbs. You also aren't just teaching a tackle how to block, as he was a fullback/tight end before being converted to DT for his Junior year in college. You're also in a situation as far as the roster where Dion Sims is your only real guy who can do that kind of stuff with Charles Clay leaving and Jordan Cameron being kind of a lightweight in that regard.

And we are so deep at DT, it is not hurting the Defensive rotation

    Good idea.

Physical run game is the missing link in the offense. I'd rather have an actual FB on the roster but Mitchell is worth taking a chance on.

I love it. Now someone to tell Coyle to stop dropping our DT/FB into pass coverage. We need him fresh for run downs on both sides of the ball!

I think it's an idea worth exploring. We've seen the Texans use J.J. Watt in somewhat of the same manner, though he's a more viable receiver. Domata Peko has played FB for the Bengals and moves surprisingly well for a 325-330lbs man.

I would think there would be a lot more respect if Suh would line up at FB, Can you imagine the WTF expressions on the D.It worked for the Refrigerator. We could call Suh the Ice Machine crusher.:wink2:

I remember how excited i was for the j train. It was 1 pre season game and remember how excited I was for our FB, our short yard game. Kind of ironic the way things worked out the last few years. DT was so bad last week that it was not even a story during the whole game. We cut him, later re sign him due to injury as he was the only guy on the street that could walk in and known the offense.

I hope he does better at FB than Paul Soliai. When we tried Soliai at FB, it was a disaster. Painful to watch.

This could end up being a really big deal.. my name is Earl is a big dude, his acceleration/first step is really good, and he can catch the ball surprisingly well. We need to get him in some goal line action.. either rushing up the middle or going out for a pass in the flat.

Mitchell does look plausible as a big skill player in those photos. Like an oversize TE.

On one of the catches into the flat I saw today.. he beat the LB (don't know who) to the edge, for a 300 something pound man his acceleration is crazy. He looks like a bowling ball, I really wanna see him run somebody over.. maybe against the Panthers this weekend if we're lucky.

I absolutely love this idea and am fully supportive...give him a carry where he trucks somebody on his way to the end zone and I'll guarantee you a victory.

Earl Mitchell's 10 yd time is rather good for a 300 lb man. Could be good for goal line & short yardage situations.

so was this the plan from the start ? is this the reason they guaranteed like 90% of his salary back in march, because he will play 2 roles ?

This is awesome. I can't wait until Big Earl gets the rock on the goal line and leaps over the pile for a TD.

well, grimes said today he hopes that he gets some short yardage carries near the goal line, I dont see why we couldnt go the route you suggest, Im very pro smashmouth and that is the definition of it..phiilips or suh as the blocking back so we dont have to worry about the exchange..id go for it, and ill say this, if he does do this and its successful, with or without the blocker, we will win the game.
