[h=3]Newsy morning at Miami Dolphins training camp[/h]Tight end Arthur Lynch, who spent his rookie season on injured reserve and had struggled in this Miami Dolphins training camp, was cut by the team this morning.
The club signed free agent linebacker James Davidson.
On the injury front, the club announced that only linebackers Koa Misi (calf) and Jordan Tripp (ankle) would not be practicing today.
This assumes receiver Kenny Stills, who has missed the past couple of weeks with a calf injury, will be back at practice although that is not totally certain because, well, sometimes the trainers forget to report a guy here and there.
So confirmation will come from my twitter account whether Stills is working or not.
It will also be interesting to see what repercussion this has on Rishard Matthews. Will he be bumped back to second team? Or will Stills have to earn his way back on first team?
    Tune in later.

One of Hickey's worst draft picks to date?

He was a very good college player. A go to guy for the Georgia offense. His injury issues didn't help. Got him off on the wrong foot.

like Lee said he did battle a back injury, but I didn't think he'd make it based on college tape.

Definitely. That one didn't make a ton of sense at the time, and it still doesn't.

I'm still not convinced on Walt Aikens but I'll welcome him proving me wrong there. I think Matt Hazel will be next among washouts but that's a 6th round pick so you expect that.

It's nice that we're halfway through the second training camp and it's really only becoming clear that one or two of the eight draft picks are going to wash out. I won't say that's above or below average, it's just nice that it could be a lot worse.

Not shocking, given his injuries. Time to move on.

I'm a UGA fan, so, I'm familiar with him. Lynch had the physical tools, but had a habit of screwing up in key moments in college. Personally, I wouldn't describe him as very good. I was disappointed when we picked him, and I felt it was only a matter of time before he was cut. If he wouldn't have gotten hurt, he would have been gone last season.

    Bad pick, IMO.

I'm a UGA fan as well, and merely hoped he would have that cathartic moment when the switch would come on....
but it appears that the switch is broken, and the power's not on anyway!

I think the issue here is that Arthur Lynch was probably dead-ended by Dion Sims emergence. He looked like he was supposed to be the #2 TE by design, and when Bill Lazor took over he pulled Dion Sims out of Philbin/Sherman's doghouse and made him a big contributor.

Lynch isn't cut because of Dion Sims tho. Training camp is a 90-man roster. You don't cut your 6th tight end on the 90-man training camp roster because your 2nd tight end turned out to be a good blocker.

If it can be said that anyone aside from Arthur Lynch just got Arthur Lynch cut, it would be Tim Semisch, Gerrell Robinson and Jake Stoneburner.

I think those other guys certainly were a big part of it, but I ultimately still there are roster math considerations working against Lynch. It isn't about overall quantity as much as it is the kind of guys you're going to end up keeping on the active roster.

Lynch was drafted with the idea that he'd be a complementary/utility type #2 guy, and this team doesn't seem to want to keep two of those guys on the active roster. They'd rather have their #3 be a developmental guy and a shot at a future receiving threat. Lynch wasn't going to compete with the guys you named, so he's gone.

I think that's the same reason why you saw Lynch put on IR in dubious circumstances last year. He all but admitted he was red-shirted last year, and I think that's because they decided he was going to play Sims role or nothing.

But even so, not even to be given a chance at being on a 90 man roster through another training camp. That's pretty extreme, and surprising.

I am just happy that Hickey can move on quickly from a mistake instead of dragging it out.

No, Lance was cut before the year was over. That is quick for a 5th round pick.

A fifth round pick not making to the second season? I do not think that is quick. For a 1st, 2nd or 3rd, yes. 4th, maybe. 5th, 6th or 7th, no.

He was on injured reserve during his rookie season. I assume they wanted to see how he would develop once he was able to practice injury free. Obviously they were not impressed with his play and decided to cut him.

If he had not been placed on injury reserve last year and the coaches had been able to see more of his play on the field, he probably would have been cut last year.Being injured last season was probably the only reason he was even on the roster going into training camp this year.

I assume the same thing. If I remember correctly he did play in OTAs and a lot of training camp.

Honest, I do not think it is that rare for a 5th round pick to be cut during the 2nd season.

Never understood the Arthur Lynch pick. Usually it takes a little time to determine if a pick has been wasted, but not with this one. Just a horrible job by the GM .

What I like to do is go back and look at that draft class to see what the "real" cost is in terms of talent that was passed up to draft the player who did not pan out.

For Example Koa Misi was massively expensive, we missed GronK and Graham.

Lynch from that pov, did not cost us very much at all
