More so, I wasn't prepared, didn't know what I was doing out on the field. To hear that in the NFL,(although he's a rookie),is odd.Things like that don't sound right unless he was holding out and did'nt know the playbook.I would have kept my mouth shut instead of telling the team I don't know what I'm doing out here. He's also the 1st person I know of to say the speed of the game really is'nt that different in the NFL than in college? Is this kid's eggs scrambled?
So far he hasn't looked bad on the practice field. He's destroyed the Jets second team routinely. Remember, he missed the entire minicamps & OTA's (except for one day) because of the stupid collegiate rules of you can't report until classes are over. He has only been actually working on the field with the team since Friday. The 34 is the most complex defense there is, and he's probably a better learner by doing things on the field than by studying the playbook.
Its to be expected. Gholston has to learn how to play LB, now he played the leo position at Ohio St but it wasn't his primary position. He is rookie of course he is going to struggle early.
Far be it from me to defend any Jet player or fan but this touches on one of my biggest pet peaves. Everyone should back off on him and let him progress up there. He's a rookie and it will take him time to progress. The baptism of fire media reps give these rooks for not stepping on the field and being great is unbelievably stupid. you've got the right outlook here 124.
Gholston was the most impressive athletic specimen of the draft. but he was also the most "bust-able" of the elite picks. now im not saying he is going to be one thing or another, but that was the consensus then, and the jury will be out for a while. theres no certainties in this game. ny media will ride him, but if he produces in the future, all will be forgotten.
Hmm..perhaps if the playbook was in crayola or something? Oh come on folks, Vern Gholston's playbook will be a page: "Whip LT, sack Qb, Whip LT sack QB Whip LT and Rb, sack Qb"
You obviously have never seen him play. Your also acting very arrogant towards this. I'm not sure why you keep insulting his intelligence but what ever man.
Actually I'm merely joking BuckeyeKing, Gholston will do fine just on athleticism alone, the idea that if he doesn't master dropping into coverage he won't play is a non starter. As an edge rusher he won't have to know the playbook, and that is most likely his most important role for awhile this year. But I would recommend getting him the 128 pack of Crayolas though...
I should have guessed sarcasm. He still has to learn a new system. I know he will primarily blitz his first year.
buckeyeking, he is a Jet now, we are allowed and almost required to talk **** about him... yes hes an old Buckeye and still close to your heart... but we are talking about a current Jet on a Dolphins message board... do not expect kind things to be said about the man...
you should try it, it'll make you feel better... lets talk about Gholston needing a playbook on tape because hes having trouble reading it... or that the steriods he took to make his brain grow didn't work how he wanted... join us
Exactly. Look at Shawn Merriman, he's terrible in coverage but will make up for it with his pass rushing abilities. I think Gholston will be used in the same way. I'm not saying he will be as effective as Merriman, just that he should be utilized in that way.
In other words, he has the physical tools to hang with NFL caliber talent right off the bat. I'm not sure which is worse though, needing to hit the weight room to measure up to the competition or needing a tutor to learn the playbook and where to be on the field and when. Either way, I think Gholston will be just fine, and word is that Dustin Keller is really playing well so far. I'm expecting another home run Jets draft class to step it up this season.
Gholston is a project. He should be molded into a solid LB, not thrusted into a job where he has to be great right now.
Exactly why he isn't starting. For the time being he will be the back-up to Calvin Pace on the Weakside, but could play either the Weak or Strong side on obvious passing situations for at least the first month of the Regular Season. I would think on something like a 3rd and 9 the LB'ing core would look something like this: ILB's: Thomas & David Harris SSLB: Gholston WSLB: Pace
Yea same for Taylor. Defensive staples of the past have moved on. Vilma is kind of an afterthought at this point with the LB core we'll be putting on the field this season though.
Don't worry, he will be ready to bum rush whatever squib is taking the snaps on opening day for the Dolphins. BZ
It will be weird on our side not seeing Zach Thomas and Jason Taylor, especially for someone like me who is 20 years old and has seen Thomas & Taylor manning the Miami defense for almost my entire Football life. Mainstays have moved on, although Jonathan was only here for four years, he did make quite an impact those first two in the 43 scheme where he was very, very successful.
I've always had my doubts about Gholston, the guy was hyped from being a mid rounder to somehow being picked in the top 10. I"ve also never heard any DE being secribed as a "raw prospect" as much he was.
John Abraham was a raw prospect and although he's had trouble staying on the field, when he's on it, he's one of the best pure pass rushers. Gholston's elevation into the 1st round and Top 10 happened after his senior season in which he proved he was no one year fluke wonder as a Junior.
Its in the Jets best interest to keep things as simple as possible for the Gholston. If he is allowed to just pass rush he will be a great LB.
The no longer struggling Gholston was with the 1st team today according to a friend who was at practice. The Linebacking unit was: WSLB: Pace ILB: Barton ILB: Kassell (David Harris has missed the past five days but looks to return soon as he was running well and doing plenty of exercises on the sidelines) SSLB: Gholston
Totally agree. The Dolphins, the team I have lived to hate (kinda) is really no more. Thomas/Taylor leaving just leaves Ricky Williams, which is a joke in itself. BZ
Also had two would be sacks of Kellen Clemens while working with the first team yesterday. No real news from him today, the last practice before Thursday's game in Cleveland. BuckeyeKing, this thread is your current update!
