I saw Joe Philbin place a large emphasis this week on the need to finish drives.

Jonas Gray being on the active game day roster could help them do that, especially with LaMike James banged up.

As I've said, Jonas Gray has a nose for the end zone. Always has. He converts those tight red zone plays into touchdowns and you know what you're getting from him in short yardage situations. Lamar Miller and Damien Williams aren't built for that.

I do not know if preseason is an indication, however watching the preseason made me worry about Damien Williams. I thought he didn't do a good job of trusting his blockers and caused him to lose yards.

He's still got that Daniel Thomas look as a pure ball carrier. Good in the passing game though.

In addition to the possibility of seeing Jonas Gray dragged out onto the field in short yardage and tight red zone situations, I would look for them to put Earl Mitchell in at fullback.

They experimented with that in camp and they were very enthusiastic about the results, but then the idea was curiously absent from all preseason activities. Probably just trying to keep it a surprise.

[h=3]Dolphins make multiple roster moves (none might be permanent)[/h]The Dolphins have been busy little bees this afternoon, working the back end of their roster.
The team has promoted running back Jonas Gray and offensive lineman Sam Brenner from their practice squad to their active roster. To make room for both players on the roster, the team waived both guard Jacques McClendon and quarterback Logan Thomas.
Thomas, signed off waivers earlier this week, didn't last long enough to find a place to rent. He was living in a hotel. He was also something of a luxury as the Dolphins already had a quarterback on the practice squad and two others -- Matt Moore and Ryan Tannehill -- on the active roster.
The Dolphins may still add Thomas back onto the practice squad if he goes unclaimed on waivers.
The move to promote Gray is interesting in that he was obviously a late addition to the practice squad and obviously showed enough in practice this week to convince the team he is worthy of a spot. It is possible the Dolphins were guarding against another team poaching Gray from their practice squad.
Gray is now able to play in Sunday's game against the Washington Redskins but that would mean either Lamar Miller or Damien Williams would lose snaps in the game. That remains to be seen as neither Miller nor Williams has been known to have done anything that would suggest such action.
Brenner was the backup center for much of training camp but was cut on the final cut to 53 players. McClendon, who also played guard during training camp and the preseason, had taken over backup center duties when that happened.
Obviously, Brenner returns to that spot on the roster now after what seems like a better week of practice than McClendon.
By the way, none of these moves are permanent. The Dolphins could easily re-sign McClendon next week and put Brenner back on waivers and eventually the practice squad. And, of course, Gray's status is game-to-game as well.
We are talking about the back end of the roster.
On the injury front, the Dolphins are relatively healthy as they depart for Washington Saturday. Left tackle Jason Fox, who is still fighting the fallout from a concussion, is listed as doubtful.
Branden Albert (knee), Jamar Taylor (thigh), LaMike James (shoulder) and DeVante Parker (foot) all were full practice Friday and are listed as probable.

Both would bring an element of toughness that seems to be lacking on the offense. Curious to see what Earl Mitchell can do out there on short yardage situations.

I was just lamenting the lack of short yardage back in another thread. I was worried that we wouldn't have one until Ajayi got healthy or Gray moved up to the 53. I thought that was a hole in our offense. I also think that Thomas needs time to develop and won't be of any use this year, so I prefer him on the PS. So I really like this trade-off, particularly if we're successful getting Thomas on the PS.

they want a big back so they activate jonas gray? Gray weighs 225lbs, Miller weighs 225LBs...... Just say they needed another body at RB instead of saying we need a "big back".

By "big back" they mean one that is dependable in short yardage situations and between the tackle situations.

I'd rather they draft a development QB next year and leave a spot open on the PS for someone else, rather than take on someone else's over-drafted failure. I live here in AZ and I don't see it - AT ALL. He's not a "natural" and fluid QB ..... more of an athlete pretending to be one.

Agreed. Williams is a decent 3rd down back but not a guy suited to closing out games.

Williams is a receiving back though. He is by far the most comfortable out of all the Dolphin RBs when in that position. I appreciate Lamar Miller's vision and toughness, but Williams is going to annoy his detractors this year by being productive. His quickness and nose for yards in the open field make him an excellent option for Tannehill. I'm surprised every time people overlook Damien Williams.

It's a good move. I think we saw in the Pats-Steelers game that situational football can mean a whole lot between a win and a loss. Gray absolutely fills a need given Ajayi's health issues and seeing that he's a rookie anyway. Gray's proven that he's no slouch even as a rotational back, too. He can tote it. Wonder if LaMike will be active on gamedays.

How does that make sense? Wouldn't they be happy because he is being a productive Dolphin?

I like his catching out of the backfield. Just everything else he does seems sub par. I do only have preseason to go by and preseason should always be taken with a grain of salt.

so when miami had 1 yard to gain last season, and lamar miller averaged 4 yards per carry in that situation wasn't good enough? And had the best conversion % in the NFL...

It makes perfect sense for Haters, I.e. "Detractors" (as it was so eloquently put) to become annoyed upon have to rescind constant criticisms, and/or lack of confidence in a young player as they continue to improve and even begin to excel in the NFL.

Simply put, Detractors don't rejoice... Skeptics aren't fans. I have frightening examples!

Williams' strengths are plentiful, and useful to this offense. His weaknesses are perhaps correctable, but certainly maskable. I think he should be returning kick offs, and perhaps even punts. He was great in 2014 preseason as a returner, what gives ?

I think we all agree the Jonas addition is an unquestioned positive. What I like about the Dolphins evolution is that we have been able to get some proven contributors at great value for the first time in forever. Guys we aren't counting on to be stars. Additions like Jordan Cameron, Jonas, Greg Jennings... These are all guys who have proven to be legit NFL contributors.

We don't need any of these guys to be the reasons we win ten games. We need each of these guys to be a reason we win one game each. The core of this team should get us to 8 wins automatically. I love that we have reached a place in roster construction where we have some guys that we know can make plays if we need them to in a pinch.

watching the pat game the other nite, i tried to imagine if we had the players to play on that kind of stage..On defense I think we have stars on 4 different levels that can..Suh..Wake..Jenkins..Grimes..Jones..all hi level athletes and very good to great football players..on offense I know Jarvis and Jennings can get it done on that stage, I believe Miller looks like his feet are now matching his brain. and Parker is a natural, and Then Ryan...I want to see Ryan on that kind of stage..with that kind of demeanor..I just want an angry football team, is that so wrong?
