Your position becomes easier to understand/accept only when one looks at things one game at a time. But when you see such clear statistical evidence of this team performing way below average (measured by points on the board) in the 1st quarter during Philbin's entire tenure, yet somehow doing real well in the 3rd, that tells you something's going on that's really hard to pin on individual players missing assignments or an abnormal amount of penalties/injuries, etc.. It suggests the coaches aren't preparing the team well for the game, but can adjust well after halftime.

Similarly, when you look at play-calling, or how certain players like Dion Jordan were used, or how it's been a trend that new players are brought on so slowly that they replace an underperforming player way after it's clear he needs replacement, that's on the coaches. Likewise with the use of time outs, when to go for it on 4th, etc.. That's also on the coaches.

Point is, I think most of us (including many commentators in the media) that rate Philbin way below average are not just saying it without any critical thinking. We're saying it because that's where it seems like a good portion of the blame lies when you take into account Philbin's entire tenure.

2 ways to go with this.

    A) If were talking in general. Always QB.
    B) With this current roster I'd say RDE and MLB are both high priority. O.V. blows and so does our MLB situation.

Lots of QB answers there, and some HC (which would be my choice).

My question is this...why, when we had BOTH, for many years, did we not bring home the hardware, if they make THAT much of a difference? Rhetorical by the way...

In the current team's case, I'd put RT closer to Marino (not saying he's close, trolls, before you start frothing and dragging your knuckles) than I'd but Philbin to Shula...so I'd say HC, withOUT GM power.

In support there-of...no friggin' way the Cheatriots EVER sniff a Super Bowl* ring w/o Belicheat, but very possibly could have w/o Marcia, especially the first 3...IMO.

I think it's because Bill Arnsparger left after the '83-'84 season. Up until then, we had a very good defense, constantly ranking in the top 10 and often top 5. After that, we were consistently below average (with a few exceptions).

We almost won the SB in 1984. Had we had a good defense in subsequent years, I bet Marino retires with 2 SB wins.

Agreed...and I think most would agree. Olivadotti really hurt.

Spot on. Penalties lost us the Jags game. That's 100% on the players. I'm sure many here would say the opposite but I don't expect a HC to control every single movement by all 46 players. I'm no fan of Philbin but fans seem to blame the coach for everything. At some point you just gotta realize maybe our team isn't all that talented. I think we ll have a good chance to beat the Bills assuming we get some keys guys healthy and don't shoot ourselves in the foot over and over.

Which HOFs are you replacing in each spot?

QB: I'd go Marino, Manning or Young (three of my favorites)
    MLB: Zach or Ray Lewis
    OLB/DE: Shawne Merriman on steroids
    HC: Bill Walsh
    Owner: Joe Robbie

Larry Little might have been the greatest guard of all time. He would make a big difference on this team.

Why all the answers of "QB?" Very clearly, the OP said QB was not a choice. I guess we have to have agenda's in every thread. LOL

No coaches in the draft either.

Which brings up a cool idea: let teams not only draft players but coaches (with coaches having similar types of contracts as players, e.g. in terms of years before becoming a free agent)! It would help answer questions like how much teams value coaches vs. players.

I know the schools aren't great in that state. But try to read. The OP said you CANNOT pick QB.

    That GED isn't helping.

What GM doesn't want us to pick a HOF QB?? As the team is now I would choose LT. Why is it that RT gets excuses via the OL, but Miller does not?

Well, I took the option of QB off the table because it would've been everyone's answer. Moreover, this franchise has made a commitment to RT17 that won't be broken for at least another few years so if this discussion has any practical side, it wouldn't come from hearing everyone talk about how great it'd be if we had Tom Brady on our side. If that's all someone has to contribute, it's not helping.

I was really hoping folks might give some insight on WHY they would've gone with a MLB over say, a rangy FS like Ed Reed for example. Or why anyone might consider a RB like Barry Sanders knowing that Vernon and Wake may be gone relatively soon?

In regards to Miller, I think the consensus is that Miller is a good player but not a transcendent talent. Even if the line was alright, the team may still need to add a significant piece to the backfield. Although we saw him putt up 1.1k yards in only about 200 carries, there are a couple concerns: (1) it's hard to imagine him ascending much beyond those totals and (2) it's hard to imagine him getting more than 216 carries. For those reasons, I don't think very many people will argue he's the next Jamaal Charles or Lesean McCoy.

I'd also choose MLB if you can't choose coach or QB. The reason for me is that a good MLB can help plug two holes at once: run defense and defense against TE's. A good FS will help against deep(er) passes, but I don't think that's where you'd want to improve this defense if you had to prioritize. MLB looks like the best use of resources for a single defensive player IMO.

    My team:

QB: Marino would be hard to pass on but my team is about ballin' and Bradshaw or Stabler were all day all night ballers!
    MLB: Dick Mutha Flippin Butkis!
    OLB/DE: Randall, LT, JJ Watt
HC: Shula Takes his'n and beats your'n and your'n to beat his'n.
Owner: Roonie, DeBartalo, and Al "just win baby" Davis

According to the parameters (no QB no coaches) I am debating:

    An RB

    An MLB

RB because adding a HoF level running talent will massively assist Tannehill and our passing game too. My only misgiving is that Philbin runs less than anyone in the league.

I don't think MLB is as impactful as it once was in the 70's and 80's. The league throws more now. So today's HoF MLB has to be great vs the pass too. What I like about it is that I believe you need a star at each level of a defense. At least one on the D line, one LB, one CB and one Safety in order to be truly dominant. We lack a star in the LB corps. A HoF LB would wreak utter devastation behind Suh and Wake.

    Tough call.

Hey Greg, can I have two HoF players? One for the offense and one for the defense?

You'll get nothing and like it!

Ha, I agree about the multi-tiered defensive philosophy. The Ravens did that well.

Where would you put the offensive player? O-line or RB?

RB. One great OL cannot change the 5 man unit enough.
