The La Canfora thing I didn't realize, but I'm still of the belief that there is some hostile anti-Shanahan source that was getting a lot of airtime in the media. La Canfora also got a bit of heat for changing his mind and being complimentary of Shanahan with the Browns.

The nepotism is really the most concerning thing to me- especially in light of the Joe Philbin experience in Miami.

There are mitigating circumstances in that Kyle Shanahan runs a system in a very strict sense- There is a teaching method and a way of doing things that is going to result in the valuation of guys who know and buy into it over other qualified coaches. I'm not sure we're in a position to properly judge how much the LaFleurs and McDaniel are detrimental or beneficial, and I suppose you're sort of in the same boat with them as you are Zac Taylor.

I think you can also argue that Shanahan has been "right" in a lot of conflicts- Donovan McNabb, RGIII, the Redskins and Browns are dysfunctional franchises.

Not sure I agree, I think we do need someone who has a proven track record, we've been starting from scratch since Wanny, he's the last HC we hired who was previously a HC.

Well I am not sure I want to replace the GM and what not, but whomever the new coach is must be not only willing to work with Hickeybaum, but happy to do so.
Does anyone have any thoughts to Scott Linehan?

Now if Sean Payton comes available we should go full on for him. And if he wants his own GM, I am sure they can/will sacrifice Mr Hickey.

You would have to pay him BIG $$$ well not you but Ross, but Gruden would be sweet. I don't think he's going to coach again though.

    Wild cards...
    Dick LeBeau
    Scott Linehan
    Brian Schottenheimer
    Wade Phillips
    Jim Mora

I would root for Mora the hardest off that list, Wade Phillips would make our D invincible quickly, Linehans offense is really good.

Any one of them should be able to get the players attention at least.

Well I know I don't want some college hype coach. I prefer experience. A proven track record.

Gruden, as much as I'd like him... he's off the table anyway. He signed a contract with ESPN to call games through the 2016 season.

Dan Quinn should have been ours but Stephen Loss decided to run with Queasy and let Atlanta get him (now they are 3-0)

To be honest there are slim pickings out there right now. I guess the best option is to attempt to poach Jim Harbaugh from Michigan.

Anybody else would be a crap shoot.

Philbin was a shocking choice as a head coach. He has no passion whatsoever and this game is built on passion. (I did tell you all this after watching that pre-season thing the the Dolphins and Philbin was on). I'm starting to be thankful I failed to get tickets for the game here in London. Trounced by The Bills and The Jags. Good God could it get any worse?????

I don't get this Sean Payton love.

He's 0-3 and that team has been downward spiraling for awhile. Not too mention no coach has ever won a SB as HC after winning it as a HC of another team prior.

I would love to see both of em back.

Back in the days i wanted cowher cus the steelers was one of my fav teams but gruden man im hooked on him since he joined MNF. I love how he talks bout the game, players, breaks down plays. I think Gruden should be our coach.

Not sure what happened with Sean Peyton the last few years, but during the Saints apex he was considered a top coach. The bountygate scandal, the Rob Ryan hiring (and keeping) and the owner saga maybe just sapped his interest in that job. If an interview shows he has fire left, I would put him on a short list.

Malzhan I would give a chance to, but not Sumlin. He has some interesting offenses, but is abysmal defensively and was slow to upgrade that side of the ball. Most of his college success imo has come from superior recruiting rather than X-O management, which is why I think he would not be a great pro.

Teryl Austin is an interesting choice for me, he has been a fast rising name. Greg Roman could also be an option - look what he is doing with the Bills and Tyrod Taylor right now, after making the 49ers featuring no WR, Gore's 46 year old corpse and Kaepernick a Super Bowl capable unit. Biggest concern with any coordinator - can they translate their X-O success into team leadership. More than anything, you need to look for a unit that has fire, plays hard and aggressive, does not get down, overcomes challenges, etc. I really think the head coach is the force that organizes and motivates the madness of an NFL roster, translates practice to the field, controls the gameplay on Sunday. The actual playcalling and strategies are mostly delegated to coordinators and then positional coaches. Cam Cameron I think was a good example of how a good coordinator may be a terrible HC.

You'd see a lot of unnecessary hook n laterals in the gameplan, just for the lols. No thanks.

Very few names I really like on that list...maybe Greg Roman? Based strictly off previous teams' successes but he's only a C, I've never personally watched him to know if he has any fire or not...but I think we REALLY need it. The Jaw II or Gruden would be great...I just don't think they'll leave the booth.

Seriously though, no chance on God's green earth for Meyer or Harbaugh. We need somebody ESTABLISHED. No new guys. Somebody who has been there and done that.

    Vic Fangio.

He's the best candidate on the defensive side of the ball and to me, that's the side we need to chase down.

And along DJ's lines where he says he wants a coach that WANTS to be here...I totally agree. I'd love for a coach to interview with Ross and be like, "This once respected, and feared team (dynasty even) is in the dumpster. It's a travesty and I won't allow it to continue."

That's my kinda dude...so long as he can back it up.

Which coach, if any, gives off that kind of vibe that you all are hoping gets hired?

Keep in mind I'm not saying Vic Fangio is the ideal coach or that he's a sure-fire home run. But right now, he appears to be one of the lone bright spots and certainly the most intriguing of the defensive-minded coaches that may be available for 2016.

This is exactly what we need to think about....its beyond just HC figure head, its the Coordinators too.

Who is the HC, and then who will be his OC and DC are key.

Wonder if this would be done for say top 5 candidates what 3 headed package would be best suited to overcome Ross.

Philbin is the best option. It's obvious that we should have kept Ireland, and the problem was always that the players just couldn't get what the coaching staff was trying to teach them. You'd think that's an indictment of the staff, but it's not.

I wish to God the Dolphins would have listened to Don Shula and hired Marty Schottenheimer to be his replacement. Too late for that. Out of today's leading candidates, Josh McDaniels from New England makes the most sense to me
