Tier 3.8 lucky to be in tier 3 barely holding that because of his contract, he doesn't have that contract hes pretty much benched by any other team in the league last week!!! by his contract should be top tier 2
Tier 3 is not a bad tier. You can win superbowls with Tier 3 QBs, if your other ducks are in a row. Of course, the Dolphins have no ducks in a row, but that's up to the FO to get right.
What is the point of that chart, Roy? If the Dolphins lose a game by 15+, are we automatically assigning the blame to Tannehill? The ones we won, are we also automatically assigning the credit to Tannehill? I don't get it.
Using just the AY/A stat from this I think it gives a pretty accurate grouping. Tier 1 (8.5+ AY/A): Wilson Brady Rodgers Manning Rivers Roethlisberger Tier 2 (7-8.5 AY/A): Brees Romo Flacco Ryan Luck Foles Tier 3 (7 and below AY/A): Newton Palmer Kaepernick Smith Stafford Cutler Tannehill Bradford Fitzpatrick Eli Manning
This points out where Tanne never goes bonkers in games, all the really good QBs have games where they just go bananas and there's not a thing you can do about it, a certain % of each QBs games are like that, with Rodgers being currently on the top of that heap, probably 20 to 30% of his games are like that, Tanne only has a couple anomalies, he has only 1 game with over 3 TDs, only 6 over 2 TDs and only 20 out of 51 games with 2 TDs or more. Luck has 6 games with over 3 TDs, 11 games with 3 or more TDs, and 30 out of 51 games with 2 or more TDs. This is another "franchise" area he's lacking in, he never becomes dominant in games.
Like all stats its not perfect but it is very interesting to me. Just look at Tyrod Taylor, he could have easily been 1-1 in the 15+ point category but he brought his team back when they were down big and because of that is 1-0. Another thing is if you look at splits 0-7 to 7-14 to 15+ you see most elite QBs passer rating stats go up as the point differential increases. Whereas most bad QBs passer rating stats get worse as the point differential increases. Tannehill falls into the latter category. What I read into it is it speaks to a lack of being able to score points. When you're at your best you still don't score a lot of points resulting in close games. And when you are at your worst you get blown out.
What tier is mediocrity? Tannehill is in that tier. The mediocrity tier with a franchise crippling contract. We tripled down on stupid this offseason with Thill, Pouncey and Suh. You're more or less forced to pay Thill because even mediocre QBs are tough to find.
Article dave hyde sun-sentinal The Dolphins were expected to step up and challenge New England for the AFC East this season. They were expected to beat up some mediocre teams and bad quarterbacks in their coming-out party in September. One of the prime reasons they were supposed to do this is Ryan Tannehill, whose story was supposed to keep getting better this season. But that only happens now if Tannehill plays better. And if he makes those around him better. He isn't the problem in this offense. The offensive line is the problem. The lack of a running game is the problem. The receivers who drop crucial passes are the problem. But quarterbacks have to be the solution in the NFL, even when they aren't the problem. Tannehill has to protect the line, even if it can't protect him. He has to see the blitzes better this week against the Jets than he did against the Bills. Tom Brady's Patriots offense put up 91 points against Buffalo and Jacksonville in the same two weeks Tannehill's offense put up 34 points against them. Brady's line includes a fourth-round rookie and two players who were in Canada this time last year. He had a running back Buffalo coach Rex Ryan couldn't even name. So the Patriots have their problems. Brady's greatness just glosses over them. Ryan Tannehill feels team has not played to their potential Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill says team feels the urgency to play to their standards and also talks about the Jets defense. Tannehill isn't Brady. It's unfair to suggest he should be. You still expect a NFL quarterback in his fourth season to do more than Tannehill has in an uneven September. Bill Walsh, the late San Francisco 49ers coach, had a simple statistic for judging quarterbacks, one that doesn't have a place in the calculus of modern football statistics. "You know what you end up looking at?" Walsh once said. "First downs. Who keeps making them for his team and who doesn't. It sounds simple, but when quarterbacks don't make it in this league, it's because they just didn't make enough first downs. Will the Dolphins stop the bleeding? "Sometimes a team will go years and not wake up to that simple fact." Tannehill's offense has three first downs in the telltale first quarters of games this year. The offenses of Washington's Kirk Cousins, Jacksonville's Blake Bortles and Buffalo's Tyrod Taylor have 21 first downs in that same quarter against the Dolphins. You see why the Dolphins are starting so slow? And the quarterback on the other side is? That's not just on Tannehill, as coaching, game plans and details like Greg Jennings dropping two first downs on the opening two possessions last week are also a factor. But Tannehill knows it must improve. The Dolphins offense averages 14.7 points this year. That's the lowest in the league. Everyone keeps bringing up Ndamukong Suh and the defense. They have their issues. This offense is the bigger problem so far. Even when the Dolphins had first-and-goal at the Bills' 6-yard line in the final minutes Sunday, there was the hope of some synapses connecting. The game was long over by then. But Tannehill threw two passes toward rookie DeVante Parker in hopes of building. It's not a great time for star power in South Florida, with the Marlins' Giancarlo Stanton hurting and the Heat's Dwyane Wade aging. Tannehill got the big contract and the keys to the Dolphins franchise. Tannehill is supposed to be more valuable in his position than his coach, Joe Philbin. Now he goes to London and must, in some form, prove that by saving Philbin and everyone else in the franchise from real trouble. You can like Tannehill's progress, as I have, from the moment he stepped on the Dolphins campus. But it's Year Four. For this season to get better, Tannehill has to be better than he's been. Are you saying that elite QBs in games where they are down 15+ points, generally see their ratings go up? I don't think that's an accurate statement. Or am I completely misreading that spreadsheet? I don't remember Tannehill playing with many 15 point leads. That spreadsheet looks to be any game, winning or losing, by 15+. Given that Tannehill and the offense is frequently on the losing end of those games, and with the oline he's had, I expect those numbers. Wilson, for instance, had a defense holding teams to an average of 16 a game. He was rarely ever down 15 points.
The spreadsheet looks at all games where the final score differential was 15+ points. The G,W,L columns tell you how many such games there were for each QB, and how many of them were won or lost (which is where the win % in the next column comes from). All roy_miami is doing is showing a trend: the more games with huge point differential a QB loses, the worse the passer rating, and vice versa. It's pretty obvious once you know passer rating correlates highly with win %.
Yeah. I just was confused, cause it seems that he's trying to draw more out of it than is there. We all know that when teams get blown out, the QB usually has a lower rating. Especially true in Miami, when you're losing by a couple scores, and aren't running (cause you can't), and the oline is a sieve, teams just tee off on the QB. Essentially, the passer rating being low isn't necessarily the reason for the blowout.
I don't know. I mean given more time he can be really good. But then watching him sail those fades give me something else to think about. I guess I would put him at 2.5 with room to move up to 2. How's that for indecision?
ryan has always had very poor mechanics with touch throws, its a real struggle for him, not natural, the fades routes just happin to highlight the weakness.
His entire career (college and pro) has been predicated on throwing lasers to the comeback/curl routes. That's it.
I kept hearing during training camp this is the year we will see his improved touch pass on fades and longball, etc.Still waiting.
I know one thing. The elite qbs don't have a ball batted back at them from a defensive lineman 2-3 times a game. It's year 4 and he still has no clue with that. Hey a little touch goes along way thill. How many end zone passes do you see him throw with some air under it to let a wr make a play and the ball actually stays in bounds? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
weaknesses that I think at this point cannot be denied and are not related to poor oline play... 1} Touch passes, not just fade routes, but others like your basic screen pass, if you watch his mechanice on delivery you will see the struggle, he's not releasing the ball, hes pushing it.. 2} The deep balll..cannot measure the depth and speed of his receivers accurately, its rushed, tempo is off..even when there is time it seem there is an anxiety.. 3} Pocket presence, pocket navigation, peripheral anticipation 4} 0 awareness of when to tuck the ball and run....0 5} leadership...its not natural for him.. Strengths. 1}..throwing on the run to both sides 2} velocity, dude can spin the football, comes off his hand very nicely. 3} Tougness...will stare down the barrell, will not call out teammates 4} running the read option. two of the strengths rep wise, are not used by the coordinator relative to the strengths..
GOOD POST VERY ACCURATE!!!!! one thing you missed in the weakness department is pre snap reads, he cannot shift o'line or know where the blitz package are coming from which is part of the reason we think its the o'line. He is a one trick pony that cannot differentiate between man/zone coverage which is why he threw 3 picks in 14 passes last week. 3rd yr qb should be able to call audibles at the line = he doesn't Lucky to get a tier 3 GOOD POST!!!!
Tannehill is closer to Alex Smith than he is Andy Dalton.. That is where he is right now. Better than Alex Smith. So hes somewhere around 15-20th ranked qb
Tanny I thought was going to be way better than dalton this year but so far I have seen no difference in tannys play this year from last year so please explain why he is so much better than dalton
3 picks... One was popped up by the receiver. One was as he was getting hit. The other was all on him. He can't differniate huh? He threw 12 picks last year and he has 3 in 3 games. Yup he is a pick machine... Getting to be like fin heaven here with all the stupid **** going around.
Considering that Tannehill's been torn apart for the performances he put up in the past years, the board would have been burning effigies of Andy Dalton if he was on the team with his same stat line.
He's better in every way: TDs, less picks, yards, completion percentage, Wins, Avg, fumbles lost, QBR and rating.
Dudes, I may be new here, but Dalton sucks. He is hot now, but reality will set in for him. Interception machine.
Uhhhhhhh except he's thrown 107 TD's and 67 INT's. Significantly better ratio compared to Tanny's 68 TD's and 45 INT's.
He needs to roll out of the pocket to buy more time. I have seen more touch throws this season, i have noticed an improvement but his teammates are really letting him down. Oline is league worst and receivers are dropping critical possessions.
