Per a league source with knowledge of the situation, owner Stephen Ross is now expected to make a decision on Philbin’s job status by Monday. The prior thinking was that Ross would be doing a lot of thinking over the next couple of days.

Despite the absence of any obvious internal candidates, one of the big factors will be a desire by the owner to demonstrate to key players that he’s committed to improving the situation. Which is an ominous sign for Philbin.

Bye Philbin, sorry it didn't work out for either of us. So Jon Gruden, how would you like to be the first head coach to have the salary of one billion dollars?

Might as well fire him and give Rizzi a whole two weeks to prepare this team for the Titans. I'm not expecting a miracle from Rizzi, and I wouldn't be shocked if we lose to Tennessee, but I would like to see our players play inspired, even if we end up 2-10 the rest of the season.

I hope he gets rid of him. It's the only way we're going to win another game this season.

Ross, " Listen, Joe. I have given this a lot of thought, and I think it is time to let you go."

    Philbin, "No"

    Ross, "No?"

    Philbin, "No"

Ross, "But the team is in shambles and don't want to play for you. I really do think it is ti-"

Philbin, "Is that a candy wrapper that just fell out of your pants? PICK IT THE HELL UP, NOW!"

Ross, "Jesus, calm down dude. I am sorry. Look, I am picking it up, settle down."

Philbin, "Pardon me, Mr. Ross. I just run a tight ship around here, is all."

***Ndamakong Suh runs by naked and is kicking Jordan Phillips in the head***

Suh, "Get out of Manahttan, rookie! You don't belong here! Me and my boys Cam Wake and Ritchie Incognito are going to skull-**** your mother's dead corpse, you prick!"

Philbin, "That silly Suh. A tremendous team leader. Anyways, what the heck were you bothering me about, Ross? Do you have the paperwork for my extension ready yet?"

Ross, "Crap! I forgot the paperwork in London. I am so sorry! I will get this taken care of as soon as my jet lands in Michigan to take Harbaugh to dinner. How many years do you need?"

Philbin, "Meh, I don't care. Just throw another year on there for now. I can always cross it out and change that later. Thanks Stevie."

Really the biggest problem is who takes over? Coyle, LOL, he needs to pack his crap faster than Joe. Lazor, a year ago I would have said yes but his offense has really been WORSE than the defense which is honestly hard to imagine. I know Rizzi is the name that keeps coming up here but I dont recall a Special Teams Coach taking over as an Interim Coach - ever. However He might be the only choice available to us at this point.

One of those guys that hand out towels in the locker room might be able to handle it though.

Really, I cant fathom how this season has gone down the tubes so fast? 5 weeks ago this team seemed poised to make a serious run - now we're looking for answers and someone to get us thru to the end of the season.

If Philbin goes that isn't the only thing that needs to change. If Ross doesn't put one man in charge and carries on with the 'duct tape solution' it ain't going to work.

id like to know a few things....

first, whos idea was it to keep this oline as is.. did joe say he can work with it, or did the gm/guy who steps on the gm's toes say here joe coach'em up, we need suh to put butts in the seats...

second, we already know joe dont call plays, but his clock management has been iffy at times, but we havent been in many situations where he actually needs to coach, so... live with it, as most coaches screw up clock management from time to time... this is a stale mate..

third, does joe make decisions about who plays, snap counts, match ups on defense..

and finally, are the guys fed up with you or the play calling... joe is a likable enough person, its almost hard to believe guys dont believe in him...

we have too many chiefs and not enough Indians, i never hear other teams with personal in places where they can trump the coach or gm...

im at an impasse.. i do think joe is a stand up no nonsense guy, good values, and thick skin...

but, i think this off season we need a new gm and go from there... let him hire a full staff and make player evaluations

You know, it doesn't matter when or it they let Philbin go. When were looking back on years of late season fails with the Jets and Bills killing us when all we had to do was win a single game, the one thing that'll stand out is Richie Incognito and Martin getting bullied and well all shake our heads thinking about the coaches we didn't get because they hung on to this turd. You can't get that back.

John Harbaugh was a special teams coach before being hired to be the head coach of the Ravens . That seems to have worked out fine for the Ravens organization.

to be clear i hope joe is fired, i do like him, he is the prototypical coach... i really hoped he would develop...

but times are hard and other ppl need their opportunity since your squandering yours... JOE

That is what Philbin has said....sort of......Philbin said he met with Ross, and was told his job was secure (for right now).

Who knows what Ross told him.....remember this is the same owner that still had a head coach, and was traveling across the continent to talk to a college coach about taking (said) coaches job.

He doesn't inspire any confidence, imho. Being severe and stoic is fine if you actually show some results.....when you don't you just look like a dope that is way out of his league.

I don't know if it has been suggested or not but for any who may be wondering whether the Dolphins could continue should they chop both Philbin and Coyle, the answer is clearly YES.

The team has a total of 24 coaches on payroll, not counting strength & conditioning or sports science.

Pretty much every position coach has an assistant coach, and every unit has general assistants. Should the Dolphins can Joe Philbin and Kevin Coyle then Darren Rizzi seems the most likely to get the head job and he has an assistant special teams coach that could take over special teams for him. Bill Lazor could continue to handle the offense, unfettered by Philbin, and I suspect that Mark Duffner would take over on defense. Duffner has an assistant Dave Corrao that would likely just step up and take his place.

This whole idea that the Dolphins don't have the ability to put an interim staff and head coach in place is stupid, IMO. It's a Catch 22. You're thinking of firing the head coach after only four games because the team is REALLY underperforming. But now you don't know who to give the job to...because the team is really underperforming which means no unit smells like a daisy right now.

Special Teams has actually been solid. I don't expect it but I would be really happy to see Rizzi get the gig.

The other positive with Rizzi is as the ST coach, he has a good relationship with the really young players because he deals with pretty much all of them.

100% sincere. You're one of the few guys who are looking past the the coaching staff and addressing the guys who actually play the games.

I'm not getting crazy, his unit is good. They cover kicks really well. The tend to block a lot of kicks as well.

How many kicks did we block last year? 6? 7?

Piston, the problem is, you're overlooking Philbin in favor of putting all the blame elsewhere. He's the coach. He's ultimately responsible for the product on the field. He's responsible for the oline. He's responsible for the defense and the defensive coordinator. He is the coach. He is responsible.

We'll see...if Ross in fact fires him, but it's starting to look like he will.

If you recall in 2014, the one game/week Philbin wasn't there to do weekly install, Miami shutout the Chargers.

I've already written this season off personally, though. If things get turned around, that would be friggin' insanely awesome, but I doubt it will.

Ross needs to be looking HARD for "THE" right guy...if that means blow it up, so be it IMO.

The one thing I like about the Rizzi angle, is that we'd get to see Lazor w/o Philbin...Coyle, not so much, he's defense, but Lazor w/o Philbin could be very valuable. We'd possibly see if he's the same caller or different and more creative.
