we jes fired another coach during a season... that means 2 things, he couldnt get the job done and this is a bad team...

im a dolphin fan since 1976, born and raised in ft pierce fla... i was born into a dolphin family.... (fandom credentials)

i was rooting for joe because im a dolphin fan, i been a fan of every hc i ever saw coach this team... im the biggest dan campbell fan...

unfortunately he is set up to fail...

the oline doesnt start being good because you hire a new hc, especially when the guy you hired was partly responsible for coaching this oline up and teaching them how to maximize their potential.. They have no potential.. they have no talent... and i dont see what dan can do to fix this other than start different players and see what happens...

dan was a te coach, which is an extension of the oline coach...

his te's play very well but the rest of that line is not good at all..

the only plus is we will probably see burner and simms more than jordan now since dan admits he feels te's should block first....

jordan should be the slot receiver anyways behind parker and stills...

only way dan does well is if the dc turns this defense around and helps us win a few games...

if that happens i predict 7-9 season...

hardly a reason to be happy....

Because we possibly wont play like a bunch of ten year old school girls win or lose. Because there is a chance that a new defensive scheme will be implemented and it is very probably that Coyle will be gone. Because there is a certainty that we will run the ball and we might even have a FB on the roster. Because win or lose, our players might attemp to rip someones head clean off because that will be what they are taught to do. Even with our holes, our team will go to war. There will be fight in them and not just #14. That is all we can ask for at this point and it is welcome and refreshing. We may not win, but we are going to kick ***.

The team should have made the playoffs in 2013. All they had to do was win one of those last 2 games against inferior teams and they're in. What happened? They got blown out and came out flat. Last year almost same scenario. Primed for a playoff position only to flame out in the end. This team routinely lost close games and came out flat. Since Joe has been here they have been THE WORST 1st quarter team in the NFL. No matter the players Philbin has had here the last 4 years this team has always been the worst in the league at starting games. That is a reflection of poor game planning. When that routinely happens its your coaches not getting the team prepared. The slow starts to games and late season melt downs are not a reflection on the coaching staff? Get real. This guy was a terrible head coach. His schemes and play calling were bad. This team may not have the talent to be a playoff team this year but they are certainly better than how they're playing now. Do you realize this could have been a 3 win season with that guy? An interim head coach won't take this team to the playoffs but it was something that needed to be done. So many players are at odds with Philbin and aren't buying into his coaching because he can't coach. A change now can give the team something to get upbeat about and it can bring the team together. Philbin wasn't the only problem but he was part of the problem and needed to go. Coyle needs to go and imo Lazor needs to go too. The OL, LBs, and secondary need vast improvement. This franchise needs more work. They're not there yet but after today they took a step in the right direction.

I'm also happy to see what this Dan Campell guy can do with this opportunity. He talks the part, and he definitely looks the part.

Luckily, it's still early and we have 2 weeks to figure it out, and maybe, just maybe, salvage the season.

It's also a measure of how you practice during the week. Campbell said that's the first thing he's going to do. Implement a more competitive practice. Changing the culture. If your body is used to soft practices, you're going to take time to get in a groove on game day. Well, not anymore. No more slow starts.

The only expectations for Dan Campbell at this time should be for the players to take on his identity as a coach. He seems like the type that wouldn't ask someone to do something he wouldn't do himself.
I think we will see a lot more fight out of our guys the rest of the year. I think playoffs are out of reach, but I expect these guys to battle hard the rest of the way. If we do that and it becomes clear that these players will run through a brick wall for him, with him leading the charge, I'll deem the change a success.
He's certainly going to have to learn as he goes, but from what i've seen of him so far, he's a guy that I personally would have no problem jumping in a foxhole with.

Honestly I think we just jumped from one extreme to another with him in the mix emotion wise. He'll have these guys gassed up for a fight no doubt. I'll be at the game in Nashville too! Can't wait!

I am happy because we finally got rid of a coach that is terrible. He was gone at the end of the season anyway, might as well see what Campbell can do. Worse case, we are in the same situation, looking for a new coach. Best case, we turn the season around and we actually have something special in Campbell. I am not saying it will happen, but i have more hope now than I ever did. So there is that.

The Miami Dolphins have had a culture of mediocrity and being content with it since the end of the Marino era. We may have not won a Super Bowl since the 1973 season, but at least with Marino and Shula they made the playoffs most of the time. There is only going to be one champion at the end of the season and all a fan base can hope for is that the management and the players put themselves in a position of fielding a competitive team and putting yourself in the best position to be that one team who is happy at the end of the year. To Stephen Ross' credit, he does want to win and has shown that he will give his front office every resource possible to make that happen although his personnel decisions have been questionable. But finally somebody in a position within the franchise that matters has made it clear that the culture of mediocrity and staleness HAS to change in order for this team to get out of the quicksand. Dan Campbell really put a shot of excitement into the fan base today because he shows passion and cares and I hope it shows up on the field with better performances by the players. Philbin was a nice man, but he was very ineffective as a coach and it showed because this team folded like a towel time after time after time when opportunities were there for the taking.

I don't drink alcohol so for us non drinkers, it makes it hard to cope with loss after loss. You see, losing is hard for us to handle. Every time we lose I get depressed until the next time we win. You tracking? I'm a depressed man. Have been for three weeks now. When Ross does something that you wanted to be done. You feel like you just won the Super Bowl. Stop me if I'm not making sense...

Im with you! I have the same thoughts when we lose. That was my pick me up for the week. If the phins can compete then things get better. You made a decision to stop drinking keep that up it will be the best. As for the team , we had high expectations its hard. Now we have a new reality, we are the Go Dan Campbell show! May he bring fire everyday and A I'll fight for you in December attitud, hope the team fights. Our team gave up before the season started, which blew my mind how well the first unit started each week in preseason .

The TE coach is responsible for the Oline. The Oline coach is responsible for the TEs. Ross should have appointed the Oline coach as the HC.

None of us are happy with the team right now. We are playing very poorly and we are severely lacking in leadership and urgency.

But firing Philbin and promoting Campbell offers hope. It changes direction. A new voice in charge and a new voice that is very different from the old voice. Campbell brings toughness and intensity. He has a good relationship with the players because he can relate to them. He's going to change the culture that was in desperate need of changing.

Will it work out? Who knows. I hope so. But I know it's a lot better to give Campbell a shot and hope you strike gold than to keep things as they are and watch the season and the locker room continue to deteriorate.

Quick story. I was the best lineman at my high school and the best on my division II college team. About two years after I graduated from Nova High, I was home for summer break and my old coach called me up and asked me to help with the 2-a-day practices at Nova. Specifically, he had a junior lineman that was like 6-4, 310 pounds, could squat a house and bench press a Camaro. Off the charts talent, yet he was a "nice kid". He was strong but not tough. He was smart but not aggressive. He was everything you wanted in a lineman, yet he wasn't good enough to be locked into a 2nd string position.

So for nine days, I rode this kid's *** big-time. He saw me as a Nova alumni that still had a reputation around campus, and he remembered watching me as a freshman. And basically, I mentored the kid and told him that there's nothing nice about football...you have to be a beast in the trenches and demand respect. I told him that if he fired off the line and pancaked the DT on the first play from scrimmage, then that guy's going to be his ***** all night long. Why? Because the kid is going to be second guessing instead of just reacting...and that's how you own the trenches.

Well, needless to say, he ended up starting in the jamboree (which is just a half of football) and on the very first play, he damn near knocked the defensive lineman's head off. Then the team ran off his hip the entire night, with monster holes and plenty of space. He went onto making all-county honors the next two years and getting a free ride to a division one school, all off of 9 days of training with the right coach and the right mindset.

So while I largely agree with most of what the OP said, this is not a bad offensive line....it's a soft offensive line. Our toughest player, Incognito, was sent packing for having the exact attitude that linemen have to have, and we've focused more on "moral character" lately than we have knocking the living **** out of someone and making them your *****. But that can be fixed, very quickly, and I think you'll be surprised at how different our line looks in 13 days.

And for the record, I'm a nobody....not trying to brag here at all. But I know offensive line and what it takes to dominate, and our guys haven't showed it in quite some time. They were coached that way though and that will change quickly fellas. Just my 2 cents.

if you have a car that breaks down 60% of the time, do you keep it or look for a new one? For the philbin era we've had a car that breaks down 60% of the time. Now we are getting a new car. Everyone loves new cars. New cars don't always work either. However, it is a new car and the excitement of the potential of it working instead of slumming it on public transportation makes you happy.

I hear ya, Keyfin. But what if these guys are a bunch of mismatch pieces, ya know? To be quite honest, I don't even know what kind of offense we are running now because there has been no real character about it (unless "quick screen to Landry for the first down" is an offense?), so what guys would be the best five in it?

I've never played football, so don't kick me for assuming that lineman on both sides of the ball should inherently have some nastiness to them?

Isn't that kind of a thing with lineman from peewee up? Biggest kid gets put out there and eventually plays nasty, if not already. At least at some point in his playing career? I'm not sure that Campbell can change that. Maybe he gets them (O-line) to at least play harder. But at this point, I think they either are or they aren't.

I think the most difficult part of this ordeal is to, at the very least, establish an identity on offense. Then work from there.

For example, I doubt he can change a Dallas Thomas. I don't know what I'm talking about here. Trying to make a point and it's all going backward.....kind of like Dallas Thomas.

The WORST thing any lineman on either side of the ball can do is think about the play as it unfolds. These guys are such elite athletes that there simply is not time for thinking; you line up on the line, you visualize your assignment, and then you fire off the ball with a vengeance and knock the holy hell out of the first guy to step in your path. It's a three second explosion, much like sumo wrestling, and the best can consistently attack on instinct alone.

For example, Wake doesn't think, "This guy is getting low on me, so I need to grab his jersey with my right hand and swim across with my left, then take a hard step and dive for the quarterback." He's practiced that move 10,000 times so when we does it in a game, it's 100% reflex. Just like shooting a free throw.

But here's the deal, our line is not exploding on run plays...quite the contrary. They are allowing defenders to get their hands on them, which means that they are not being aggressive and creating collisions...which means that they are having to think on the fly and try to compensate for that one move their opponent has practiced 10,000 times. And every time, instinct will win...the defender can't be blocked, because he's already past you as you're trying to adjust. But if you fire off the ball and make first contact, now the defender is off balance and having to adjust himself. By that time though, the RB has already hit the 2nd level...your job is done. Release and run up-field. Run blocking is the easiest thing in the world. You get angry, you fire off the ball low, and you knock the living **** out of someone before they've taken their first step. Game over.

Passing is a little different because you're not exploding, you're containing. It's 50x harder to do consistently, which is why you see tight ends and running backs staying in as safety valves. Or why your quarterback rolls to one side. But again, it's that very first step...taking your position and making first contact to break the defender's momentum....you make solid contact and it's a minimum of 3 seconds to the quarterback....even if you completely choke from that point forward. But trust me, it's very very hard to hold a pass block for five seconds without getting called for holding....because on pass downs the defender has the clear advantage. So that's why we cut off the inside and try to build a pocket...let the big guy run all day if he's going to the outside....and ride him along as far as he wants to run.

So when it comes to this line and folks like Dallas Thomas, you can watch back in prior years and watch the run blocking. The ball snaps....one Mississ (STOP). At the 3/4 second mark, has the lineman already fired out of his stance? Is his back still level with the ground? If either answer is no, then he's already lost due to technique.

One Mississippi...two M (STOP). The linemen is at his opponent right at the 1 second mark. Is he making first contact with his shoulder? Is he still low and driving through his opponent? If either answer is no, then it's not a good block. When your hands come out on a run play, that means you've already broken your power stance and you're not actually hitting the opponent, which is much easier to blow through.

One Mississippi....two Mississippi (STOP). At the two second mark, Miller has either already turned the corner on a sweep or he's in the 2nd level of the defense. If a hole is there, then he's likely 6-8 yards downfield already, and since you'll never catch him that means that your play is over. You stand up tall, look at your defender, and then walk towards where the huddle will be. Then you do it again the next down.

Now, your question is, "Can our rag-tag line do this consistently?" Just look at the game tape from our better running games last season...they've proven that they can. But when you get a 3 and out, and then another, and then another without any additional runs called, your line takes it personally. They attack on run plays and defend on passes....and passes are way harder to protect. So every lineman in the country at every level wants to run the ball...that's where you prove your worth. But we simply don't run and we don't let our guys build any confidence or get a feel for the game....and then they start thinking too hard and reacting too little.

Because here's the other thing. If you put a guy on his *** on first down and your RB goes for 7 yards, it's a completely different situation than what our guys normally face. The defender has to actually read before trying to make the play on short downs, and the more you put him on his butt, the more he's thinking instead of doing what's natural to him. So even the pass blocking gets easier by running the ball with authority.

So in my opinion...YES, these fellas can block with the right leadership, the right play calls and the right motivation. That wasn't happening though, and like a lot of others on this team we were setting them up to fail.

In fact, flip the script and look at our defensive line....they're winning their battles across the board, leaving massive gaps for the linebackers to charge through (or runners to run through), and we're telling our guys to sit at home and defend the flats. And as a player, I can tell you that it's so ridiculously frustrating to do exactly what's asked of you over and over again while the coaching doesn't see the bigger picture....it's taking 6-7 guys to block our front four and we're still getting torched deep while the linebackers scratch their asses. It's infuriating in every sense of the word and I can't blame Suh for freelancing....cause Coyle is too damn stupid to take advantage of the dominance up front.

Think about it. What happens on a linebacker blitz? Either the player lights up the QB untouched, or the guard releases inside and picks up the pressure. So if you blitz to Suh's gap, he can't be double teamed....guaranteed 1:1 coverage and the odds of a sack/pressure skyrocket. Why haven't we seen it in 4 games though? Hmm.

But as I said before, these are easy fixes. It's like having a lion in the cage, but keeping him locked down for three weeks straight and then suddenly saying, "Attack boy!" Maybe he attacks, or maybe he just lays there...because that's what he's been trained to do. So once you give our line a green card to fire off the ball and light someone up repeatedly, there's absolutely no telling what's going to happen. Because they haven't heard that for years now.

I hope that helps...I tried to be as detailed as possible.

Cause I can watch games again and see what we have on our team. The players quit on queesy and I think rightfully so. If Philbin stayed it would have been hard to evaluate players because Philbin would have still been here and you would question if it was Philbin or the player who really sucked. Right now the players don't have any excuses anymore, I'm looking forward to see what we have. Hopefully we finally pick a good coach in the offseason for a change and then we go from there, I'm just happy Philbin is gone because it was more then obvious that he will take us nowhere...

I mentioned it in another thread, but it is a sad existence as a fan when 2 of your happiest memories over the last 7 years or so are the terminations of ineffectual staff members.

I wouldn't describe my attitude yesterday as happy. I would describe it as relief. We can relax the rest of this season and know that regardless of how Dan Campbell does this year, Joe Philbin will no longer be the coach of this team. The team now has a chance to improve. It wasn't going anywhere with Philbin.

Seriously, if it were an option then I'd be on the first flight out. But my "football resume" reads like this-

Starting tackle, 4 years high school

Starting guard, 2 years college (dropped out due to near death of parent)

Assistant line coach Nova High School (Summer 1993-1996)

Since you like to take chances on men with high moral character, Mr. Ross, I'll just say that I have it in spades. I'm a natural leader off the field and one mean son of a ***** in the trenches, which is exactly the type of person you need to get this line fired up and knocking bodies around. We haven't drafted poorly in recent years by any means; our linemen simply have not received the proper motivation to enter contests with the right mind-set. They've simply forgotten that they're warriors and the abundance of short passes takes them completely out of their element. In other words, they're losing mentally far before things actually become physical. So you don't need another assistant to teach technique and micro-manage these dormant beasts- you need another warrior who will embrace their three seconds of glory set them free. I am that leader, Mr. Ross, and I am ready to lead your offensive line into battle.

LOL, please pass that along to Mr. Ross and let me know where to go for the interview. I'll be sitting on the edge of my seat waiting for the phone to ring. =)

Why are we happy? Because Philbin resembles this witch too much.

@KeyFin. I thought it was the correct move to Fire Philbin and hire CampBell. You have given me some confidence that CampBell's approach has a chance to succeed. The list of ifs is long, but I see the potential for success.

  37. Philbin should of went long ago but I'm not drinking the Campbell kool-aid until I see results. We heard all the change the culture thing how many times now? He has a big hill to climb and he has to do it with a staff he did not build.

Just happy about Ross finally coming to the realization that at least somebody has got to go. Still gotta clean house and go back to what got us our only Super Bowl wins- running game and defense, both of which we suck at.
