    Leadership among the players.

This team has essentially just been handed to the players on a silver platter. You now have a coaching staff with absolutely no power. There is an interim head coach, a new, first-time defensive coordinator, and a paid consultant for the offensive coordinator. Other offensive coaches have been shuffled. In terms of his inherent job security, there is no one on the coaching staff who has a vote of confidence from the owner.

That means the team belongs to the players.

If the team belongs to the players, it's the players' personalities and attitudes that will drive the bus. The leadership among them will run the show. It will determine what we see on the field.

The question is, what is that leadership? I don't think we really know.

The inherent leaders on teams are the best players with the most job security. Those players are there for the long haul, and they have the biggest investment in the team's success. If they're going to win a Super Bowl during their careers, they're probably going to do it with that team.

Who are those players here? Ndamukong Suh, and Ryan Tannehill.

What are their leadership capabilities on this team?

Again, I don't think we know. Tannehill's play is too erratic for him to be viewed as a strong leader in my opinion, and Suh is an unknown. I'm not sure he has the mettle to be a true leader, rather than a chronic malcontent whose personality issues actually detract from his leadership ability.

A wildcard here is Branden Albert. He has the ability and the job security to be a leader on this team, and it's encouraging that he's stepped up publicly this week and stated he'd like to help the team.

So we'll see in this coming game. We'll know in the first quarter whether this team truly has any leaders on its roster, and how they've taken the reins now that they've been given to them. The rest of this season will rest on that.

I have to disagree strongly. Just because none of the coaches are 'locks' beyond this season doesn't mean that they don't have respect and relationship with the players. It would be a horribly, horribly toxic environment that sees players ignoring/disrespecting coaches at the first opportunity just because they aren't guaranteed long term. I believe the players and the new coaches all want to get the best result they can. I think this could result in more of a 'team effort', but the coaches will still be leading here and the players still playing, perhaps, in fact, they'll find just the right balance of that.

Well as far as belonging to the players, it worked for the canes in '01, but this aint college, and we dont have that kind of talent. Just look for respectable individual performance from the defense. If they gel, ****in awesome, but not likely. This is a prove it to me season, just take notes on who wants to be here and work hard. I dont expect much, just dont expect to be embarassed anymore.

I do believe the team leaders have alot of ownership now. Is it there team No imo. Dan Campbell wont let them run roughshod i dont believe.

Now we did see a mini rebelion happen and that means something. Im interested in the defense and SUH's mentality! Is he a malcontent and wants the defense dictated around his strengths? Should the defense be around his strenghths ?(most likely yes). Is he just the biggest name/paid guy that was able to safely become the spokesman for the revolt? Coyle's defense showed its colors end of last yr , but a guy that gets paid like Suh shouldn't come to work in sneakers , even if he's trying to make a point.

We have alot to learn about our Phins and the players haven't owned up yet. I will say this, if i see that any one on the dolphins website puts a picture, a video, or talk about recliners Suh bought for the meeting room i'll puke. Hope there gone and Suh was the one to send em back. earn em pls.

I think we’ll see a change in the level of excitement on the field. We know that’s always the case after a coach is fired. There’s always a reactionary burst of nervous excitement in the following week. For that reason alone we shouldn’t go looking for leadership too early, let alone the first quarter of action. If leadership does emerge, it will do so over the long run and we’ll know by season’s end whether those personalities are on the roster.

On the whole I would caution people to lower their expectations for the rest of the season. This is not a season in which there is going to be a lot of positive news. The worst thing a fan could do is to begin to scrutinize everything because there are going to be major problems across the board. You simply won't have enough ink in your pen to write down all the things you see wrong with this team so don't start nitpicking now. The roster is going to have to be re-shaped quite a bit. The entire defense is going to need help in the off-season along with the O-line. Vernon and Miller will hit free agency along with a host of other less important players and to be honest, none look valuable enough to re-sign. We're going to talking about holes at virtually everyone position and debating the talent and competency where holes are currently filled.

I understand that fans want answers. Fans want something positive they can point to. The truth is it’s not there. At season’s end we’ll look back and realize how truly lost this franchise was and how much we all believed the lie. The smartest fans are the ones who can see the big picture and recognize the team for what it is—a big gamble that failed.

Teams that fire their coaches after 4 games don’t suddenly turn it around. Firings this early show a clear lack of organization. Releasing key individuals at this juncture demonstrates that there was either no plan put in place as to how the team would be built and run or that the plan which was installed was so bad that it shouldn’t have been considered.

Both of those things are major indictments against the front office of the Miami Dolphins. Fans need to recognize the ineptitude of the franchise as it stands. It’s unlikely that anyone inside the organization truly understands why things came to be where they are, let alone how to fix them. Whether or not this situation will end up producing anything positive we can’t say. The team may rally together and end up winning a few games or things may fall apart rather quickly. To be honest, it's probably irrelevant at this point how the rest of the season goes.

It would be merely a pleasant surprise to see players come together at this point.

Suh is a leader. But he's leading us to the number one pick.

Not sure anyone on the site is expecting playoffs but we would like to see a team compete for 4 quarters.I for one see no talent at linebacker, cornerback, guard and average at best qb.I am thinking best case 7-9 but more likely 5-11.

  8. my expectations do not change. i expect to see a competitive product every week they take the field.

these coaches and these players are all auditioning for future jobs, be it on this team or elsewhere. i dont buy this lame duck argument some are making. if you dont want to play their is someone right behind you who does.

as for albert he was a mistake. he cant stay healthy. good guy but he needs to be replaced.

And yet with all that is perceived to be helpless, the players still only need concern themselves with one thing...the Tennessee Titans.

Same for every team. Settle down.

    We're only 4 games in...

I largely agree although I'm interested to see how competitive this team can actually get knowing that over the last few weeks, they've played like a team destined to go 0-16. I asked fans to lower their expectations prior because even 5-11 might be optimistic. This team isn't competing right now and we're seeing them go against the weaker portion of their schedule.

Based on the Bills and Jets games, they don't look like a team worthy of the NFL. The QB--who I agree has not played well--had a great game against the Jaguars but the team around him still couldn't do enough to win.

People can "expect to see a competitive product" all they want. It won't change the fact that this team doesn't look like it's up to the task of beating anyone in the NFL at this point.

Just sucks for campbell getting head coaching gig without being able to pick his own cordinators this is going to be like sticking square peg in round hole as this team is built for finesse and not power like he would like to run.I don't see this working out with him getting head coaching shot for next year.

Dude....Campbell has no shot. I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news but the ship is sinking, the front office can see that and they're trying to save themselves from looking even worse than Philbin by season's end if what looks like a 1-15 team actually goes on to a record like that. This team in in real danger of finishing with less than 5 wins and if so, the front office will be a major trouble I think.

Campbell was not hired because the team views him as a long term answer, I can promise you that.

Totally agree. Only 1 out of 25 interim head coaches has ever kept the job. Hes a rah rah guy. It's what the players need right now. It's not what we'll need next season.

I think there was a disconnect between the FO and the coaches and that was going on from the Ireland days until now. Biggest example I can think of is Tannenbaum bringing in Suh as huge centerpiece for the defense, a guy you run your whole system through, and then the first words coming out of Philbin's mouth when asked about Suh were "He's a good scheme fit".

We need guys who have the same vision for the team going forward, from the FO to the coaches to the ownership.

I personally think Tannenbaum sort of planned this scenario, I don't think it surprised him. He wanted Philbin out last season and now he got what he wanted. And no I don't think he will be in trouble, Ross listens to him... I think Tannenbaum stays for quite a while. Maybe Hickey's on the way out, though, which is unfortunate, IMO.

I understand where you're coming from but you're just saying that because you hope Tannenbaum actually has control of the situation.

The truth is he screwed up one franchise and left them in the dirt and so far he's done the same with the Dolphins.

I'd love to believe that Tannenbaum is in control, but the evidence suggests he's probably not.

I can't argue with that but one thing I do know is I have no faith in this stupid owner to pick the right guy next year either.
Of course I am not sure the right coach would want anything to do with this mess anyway.

One thing about the NFL is that teams can always have a quick turnaround for either the better or worse. We've seen contending teams from a season ago become last place basement dwellers the very next season, and we've seen struggling teams become division winners the next season as well.
Campbell will get his shot, but I don't see him leading towards a Hollywood type turnaround. We have holes everywhere on this team, and now our quarterback (more so than ever) is becoming a question mark of doubt year four in his career. The wheels have most certainly fallen off at this point. We have twelve games left to salvage the season, but win or lose this is a step in the right direction for us. We get to see what we have on this team, and a final judgment can be made about Tannehill.

If I had his ear as a fan I'd say this...

This isn't college football where a head coach can tell everyone what to do. In college, success can happen under the singular leadership of an individual on-field coach. In fact, the best programs almost always reflect that. It's just the nature of the game at that level. College football generally comes down to a single parameter: recruiting.

Team building in the NFL is much more difficult that just recruiting. You're not just trying to excel in one area. Instead you've got 10 things to try and get right all at once. Even the best NFL HCs have superiors to whom they answer and assistant coaches who will have quite a bit of influence over what happens.

With time, the best HCs do get influence given their track record (Belichick) but good teams build with visionaries in the front office who can help select good coaches and them successfully draft the right players for the coaches.

Rather than focusing on who the next HC should be, Miami should be looking for who the next GM or VP of Football Operations should be--and no, that's probably not Tannenbuam.

8-8 would be amazing and Campbell would have to assuredly be considered heavily for the interim title to be taken away.

I am expecting 5-11 or 6-10, and anything more would be gravy

Depends, we stand on the knife, Campbo maybe turns it around, or not, every season is a roll of the dice.

I do think the OP is bordering on insanity, players should NEVER run a team
