Game 4 will be Matz vs Kershaw in all likelihood. Collins already said Matz will start game 4.

Tejada has a fractured right leg according to the TBS broadcast. Utley really needs a fastball in the ribs.

Yeah I know that Utley has some history with the Mets being that he played for Philly for about a decade... here's him sliding hard into Tejada in 2010

He better catch a fastball in the ribs his next at bat.

I am always 100% opposed to players taking things into their own hands and beaning guys, but I do think that Utley should be suspended for the rest of the series, and that the Dodgers should start the next game with a warning that the next questionable thing gets Mattingly and the player booted.

I really don't care who wins this series but yeah it was clearly a late dirty slide. The MLB really needs to just make a rule that players have to slide directly into the bag during a force play, if not they will automatically be called out and if it's a potential double play situation both the runner and batter will be called out.

My only question is could Collins have challenged a challenge play? I really have next to zero clue on the rules of any challenge situation.

    Well the rule says

    (e) If, in the judgment of the umpire, a base runner willfully and deliberately interferes with a batted ball or a fielder in the act of fielding a batted ball with the obvious intent to break up a double play, the ball is dead. The umpire shall call the runner out for interference and also call out the batter-runner because of the action of his teammate. In no event may bases be run or runs scored because of such action by a runner.

Collins would have lost any challenges. The play should never have been reviewable though as "neighborhood plays" are not reviewable. How chris guccionne determined that was a force play is beyond comprehension.

Harvey really needs to be The Dark Knight on Monday and serve up some justice. Too bad that washed up ***** Utley probably won't even start.

The other interesting aspect to this is Flores playing SS. He's clearly a defensive liability but he's also come up countless times in big spots and proven his worth. He seems to love the moment. I'm wondering if this will come back to bite the Dodgers. He's a massive improvement with the bat over Tejada, particularly as a power threat. Really hope it works that way....I'm a big fan of Flores.

Hes a tricky one...he can be very all or nothing. So its possible he pitches 7 shutout innings and its possible he doesnt get out of the first inning. Neither would surprise me...

Astros with an epic choke job. No chance in game 5. Kc will play their entire bullpen to ensure no runs are scored. Doubtful dallas starts game 5

The Royals are determined to give me a heart attack.

You can look at it either way. Houston either choked and gave up a bunch of runs, or KC finally started producing. Probably a little bit of both. I'm just glad that KC is still alive at this point.

Game 5 is shaping up to be epic. Dallas won't start (he threw something like 125 pitches yesterday), but I would bet money that Houston trots him out in the middle of the game, a la Bumgardner last year in the World Series. I am curious to see if Yost decides to go with Cueto, who has looked like a turd since we acquired him (and pretty much looked disinterested in playing competitive ball) or if we turn to Young or Duffy. My guess is that Cueto gets the start, but he'll have a short leash and we won't hesitate to go to Young, Duffy, or even Volquez if necessary.

I am astounded at how many people here do not know the rules.

Also, I am willing to bet that Utley gets his suspension lessened. There really is no precedent for this, and rumor has it that he has collected plenty of evidence of slides causing injury at second base with little, to no consequence. MLB basically punished the outcome, and not the act itself.

Speaking of the act. He was well within the base path (his arm and shoulder went directly over the bag. You are allowed three feet on either side). The play was not a neighborhood play due to Murphy's poor toss, which pulled the shortstop away from the base. Collins could have challenged the challenge, but he would have lost. Utley not touching the base is irrelevant since the ump incorrectly called him out (based on the force play, or lack there of). a player is allowed to leave the field of play if called out. If the umpire was deemed incorrect in their call, then they can award the base to the player, which is what they did.

The slide was absolutely late and was absolutely intended to break up the double play. Utley even admits to as much. The only challenge The Mets could realistically make, was that it was an illegal slide, which the umpires did not deem, during the game, nor did the replay officials.

Which actually helps Utley's case about this judgement being in retaliation to the outcome, not the play itself.

Having said all of that, Utley has appealed and is eligible for tonight. Mattingley has elected NOT to start Chase, which is probably wise. However, Jimmy Rollins IS starting, and is probably the most likely candidate to get plunked tonight, at some point. Terry Collins has even hedged his bets, to a degree, by announcing that New York will pitch "inside," all night.

In other words, "don't get mad at us if players get hit, it is our game plan to establish the inside pitch."

    Okay, Terry...whatever you say.

If I am Howie Kendrick (lead off batter) or Jimmy Rollins (Utley's long time teammate and fellow middle infielder), I am wearing an extra set of padding underneath the jersey tonight.

What is even more interesting is Brett Anderson's response. He is pretty smart, so I imagine he will let one plunking happen, but he is also a fiercely competitive baseball player who was vocal about Chase's suspension on social media, so I could see him saying "F it" if and when The Mets cash in their receipt.

Either way, this series is way more fun than it otherwise would have been. Corporate baseball sucks. Sandlot baseball is fun.

    This is now sandlot baseball.

Arrieta wasn't pitching on easy mode tonight like he has most of the season, but the Cubs brought their big boy bats and pulled it out. One win from making it to the NLCS. Even as a very optimistic Cubbie fan, it blows my expectations away coming into the year.

Game 4 starter Steven Matz grew up on Long Island about 15-20 minutes from Shea/Citifield, a mets fan. He faced LA once during the regular season and won (6ip 1 er...a HR by A Gone)...hopefully history repeats itself. He's had a long road back after TJ surgery and a bunch of nagging BS injuries. Hopefully the mets advance tonight.

Kershaw was pretty good in Game 1, Mattingly just left him in 2 batters too long and went to the wrong pen arm. Kershaw would still scare me.

Cubs/Cards in 15 minutes. We'll see if Lackey has it, going on short rest, and if the zone is as wide as it was for Game 1. Go Cubs! Chance to clinch a playoff series at Wrigley for the first time ever!
