61.6% in his one full year starting. In college where gaudy stats are usual. Competition where he can catch 15 ypc in his freshmen year as a WR.

Which metrics say he was accurate short and intermediate? that's an honest question. I'd like to see a breakdown in college.

Once Albert went down they were definitly in the running for the worst. That unit was terrible once Albert went down and they've been pretty bad this year so far without him too. I can see our offense improving just by getting Albert back this week.

And those Qbs you mentioned aren't good, they're great. All 5 are potentially going to the hall of fame with rivers being the only possible omission. We have to stop comparing tannehill to hall of fame players. He's not on that level, probably never will be.

Alex smith is the most fair comparison to tannehill.

Best reply in the entire thread. No need to bloviate about how smart or important you may be just good solid logic. No matter what side of the debate you are on this is a good post.

Win/loss is a terrible measure of a QB on a bad team. You guys hang onto that because your other arguments have been disproven time and time again.

The line was good until Albert went down. When he did, magically, the offense went down hill. The defense went down hill after Delmas went down. There's very few people that think the staff was held back by Tannehill and not the other way around.

A "good" QB would have gotten killed behind that line, just like Tanny did. Rodgers maybe, because he's a once in a lifetime talent (even though his and Tannehill's college stats are virtually identical).

You literally don't understand what you're talking about.

Pressure is the measure of an oline's pass blocking ability, not sacks. Tannehill, Wilson or a clone that mashes together the dna of Vick & Tarkenton have no bearing on the oline ALLOWING pressure. Our oline, once Albert went down, allowed an absurd amount pressure like they have this year. That is fact. Tannehill can do NOTHING about how much pressure comes through.

Tannehill makes big plays all the time. The problem is for you big plays only equal 70 yard bombs and you think they should be done once a quarter.

Yes, a QB can limit sacks, and that makes the oline "look" better....to fans who have no idea what they are looking at and have the most basic understanding of the game. Yes a QB can make receivers better, but its not a one way street. Dan Marino wouldn't be able to turn Legedu Nananee into anything other than dog ****. But I bet having Jerry Rice in his prime wouldn't hurt any QBs stats. The running game was fine last year, it just wasn't called enough because Lazor has his head up his *** or Philbin wouldn't let him. We can't run or pass this year because our line has been playing terrible.....what's that you say....Albert's been out again? Hmmmm, interesting coincidence.

But he's not waving at him with jewelry on his hand is he? It takes a team, a fact WE, as Dolphins fans, should be painfully aware of.

Marino had INDIVIDUAL greatness for a few years...really worked out well for the team in the long run didn't it?

No doubt his supporting cast can't carry a bad performance like the Seahawks can. The argument is that Tannehill doesn't really make the team better than it is. He doesn't really shine in spite of the circumstances. That's partly why I rank him at about #15 or #16 out of starting QBs. If we can build a stacked team, no problem. Otherwise Tannehill and the Dolphins are wasting time.

That's exactly what happened. Plus Tannehill LOOKS like a franchise QB. A tall handsome white, blond Texan with a hot wife. It seems like everything this team does is based on marketing. How many offseasons did we have where we signed the highest priced free agent? Wallace and Suh just within the last few seasons alone. It's ridiculous. That screams Ross interventionism to me.

It's a bit of both. The issue is the OL isn't that great and neither is Tannehill. Neither transcend the other.

Well, he makes it better than it would be if some street free agent QB were back there. But he doesn't elevate the offense into being a contender. He's extremely dependent on the variables around him whereas upper echelon QB's are the offense and they anticipate/adjust no matter who's in there with them.

In saying that, at this stage Tannehill is nothing more than a game manager. We saw last year how Lazor had to dial back the offense as we headed to England to play the Raiders. I mean there was panic going on - people were getting impatient with the #8 draft selection who was supposed to be much improved with Sherman gone.

He'll continue to have those moments where he throws a laser or he makes an athletic play out of the pocket and the "Potential" party will continue to cling to them as if they're examples of some impending greatness. Truth is you can sit there and watch QB's across the NFL and you're bound to find "maybe he's not so bad after all" moments like that when you want to. What do they do in big spots though? In Tannehill, I don't see a guy grabbing the players like a bull by its horns and I certainly don't see the cerebral elements of the great ones.

He's a tough kid though, which is a very admirable quality.

I caught a lot of flack for saying it, but it was just so obvious to me. The kid never should have been drafted at #8, which also heightened the expectation level. Then the farce "3-way QB competition" ensued ..... I shook my head at the whole ordeal. They were never going to start Moore or Garrard(whom they never should have signed anyway). Those guys were there as insurance just in case Tanny puked all over himself out there.

Most of the fan base wouldn't have been patient enough to let Tannehill sit back and work on his mechanics before he became a starter. It also doesn't help that our QB coach has been the legendary Zac Taylor ...... another Sherman/Philbin chrony.

You don't need a "stacked team." You guys make these claims, but he hasn't even ever had an "average" team around him. Even with the crap he's had, he was able to get to 4k yards, and 27/12 last season. Give him an average team, and watch the offense explode.

I agree. If the Dolphins have been anything during Tannehill's tenure so far here it has been "Average", in all facets. 7-9, 8-8, 8-8. It's pretty much exactly average.

Remember that he got that statline with Wallace making defenses back off. Imagine if Tannehill were able to actually make use of him.

Edit: I'm gonna mirror what CashInFist said. I don't believe Tannehill willed a bad team to 7-9 or 8-8. I also don't believe an offense of his would ever explode without a Seahawks-like squad. Tannehill has no single quality to make me believe he'd have an explosive offense. Doesn't run like Kaep. Doesn't scramble like Wilson. Doesn't audible like Manning. Mechanics aren't like Brady's. Only thing I can say he does well is short throws. Even with time he has never even been average at the long ball. That's not explosive.

Yeah, but I'm sure if we looked around the league we'd find more cases of nepotism. Not excusing it at all though. We should've never hired Philbin in the first place. The guy was an OC for Rodgers. Pretty sure that offense was great on its own.

The oline has been below average every year. The receivers have been below average most years. The defense had a few games where they played great, which offset many gages of below average play. The coaching has been below average in many areas. Special teams, specifically field goals, below average.

Yes, I do think that Tannehill led below average teams to average records. Note, he did not do it by himself, but his numbers certainly suffered from other offensive units not playing at least average ball.

LOL .... he says "we haven't even been average". Ummm did he not see our record during the Philbin era? LMFAO.

Dude says it's a team sport, but in the same breath makes the assumption we were average because of everyone around Tanny. Only his numbers and play were affected.

For the record, I was initially "for" the Philbin hiring. It's not that it was his influence all over the Packers offense or the swift ascension of Rodgers. It was more the case that he was around that offense. Was hoping the influence would then translate over to the Dolphins.

I started getting a bad feeling in my gut once I watched Hard Knocks ..... a coach with absolutely no social skills and was blatantly tearing down trusted leadership locker room.

Tannehill couldn't get it to Wallace as much as he should've either and it wasn't always because of pass protection. Like Sexton said, Brees just makes WRs look better than they are.

I think most of the miscues to Wallace were a combination of bad oline play and poor/inconsistent route running by Wallace. You guys seriously underestimate how much the oline has hampered Tannehill's ability to throw the deep ball. This is not saying that Tannehill didn't miss some he should have hit, but it's not nearly as bad as many make it out to be.

At the midway point of last season:
    Offensive rush rank: 5th
    Defensive rush rank: 8th
    Defensive pass rank: 1st

The passing offense was the weak link being ranked 13th.

Yeah, I love that you used data after the first 7 games, when everyone knows that the team was terrible the second half. Not to mention, the defense had serious problems on third down and fourth quarters, even in the first half. I also like how you use 7 games to try to disprove what I said about Tannehill's entire career. Like I said, even IF they rank or as average in some areas, they were significantly below average for major parts of seasons. He hasn't had consistently average units around him. He's had Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde units around him. Also, I never claimed the rushing wasn't good.

My only worry is that by the time the Dolphins establish some talent on the line or by the time they get a coordinator with the knowledge and experience to build an offense around Tannehill, it'll be too late to answer the question.

At this point, I'm not interested in wins and losses. I just want to see Tannehill look good the way he did against Jacksonville. In that game he had over 300 yards passing and really kept the team in it as a feature player. In my eyes, he didn't play well against Washington, Buffalo or New York in that same way. The weird thing was, I recall him being pressured a lot against Jacksonville, he just found a way to escape and push the ball down the field like a true franchise QB does.

If Miami loses every game for the rest of the season there is still plenty that Tannehill can do to convince me he's a franchise guy but playing this dink and dunk style of offense that affords the opposing defense the ability to rush, rush, rush on every play is stupid and is contributing to Tannehill looking bad.

I swear to God, someone in that locker room needs to walk up to Tannehill and remind him that he's the most important person the Dolphins have and he IS the franchise. He's more important than the ownership, the scouting, the coaches, the coordinators and all the other players.

I just want to see Tannehill out there playing with some swagger and pushing the ball down field 10, 15 and 20 yards. This DOES NOT require tons of pass protection, an elite O-line or 7-step drops. That is so closed-minded. Just be a little more assertive and stop throwing short and the defense will back off. Do it early and the opposing defense won't sit on all the short stuff the way we've gotten used to. The Dolphins offense is suffocating by it's own BS play-calling and QB play. I just want to see some urgency from the QB in hopes it will bleed over to the rest of the guys.

Push the freakin' ball down the field and be a little more up-tempo. It's not that complicated. After all, everyone's job does kind of depend on it!

I don't have or care about the college breakdown. I was talking about last year. Sorry if that came through unclear. Last year he completed 66% or short passes. It was in club last year where that ranked other then high on the list. Im not sure when or who posted it but I found that one here http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/...of-ryan-tannehills-season-20141230-story.html

Tannehill has 12 20 yard completions thus far, and 3 40+ yards completions. For comparison, Wilson has 15 20 yarders and 3 40 yarders.

games 4-8 were the best statistically for the offense especially tannehill. The second half the season he had some good performances but his ypa was 7.1 the back half. His ypa tool huge jumps agains Oak chi and SD.
