Philbin himself confirmed that. Queasy didnt like running or pre-snap motion. He REALLY hated Tannehill doing any freelancing.

It also helps when your best OL and best blocking TE return the lineup. Im not letting Philbin off the hook but when those guys were out, we couldn't even pick up modest yardage running the ball. Maybe it's attitude and fight. But I think a big part is being healthy with two key pieces.

    Well away from here
God forbid we do what the rest of the NFL does, in some cases to help determine man vs zone. No, why help my players out with an easy tell? Its about candy wrappers and being on time damn it. That's the important stuff.

As a followup, the last two games without Joe Philbin the Dolphins outscored their opponents 75-10. I can't honestly tell you what that guy did around here other than **** things up. He would have been a huge success if he just Constanza'd the thing and did the opposite of what he wanted to do.

Minor point but there's no smoking gun evidence in Abramson's piece that says Joe Philbin was interfering with Lazor. As of now it remains an educated guess that he was. All we know is Dan Campbell says that he is letting Lou Anarumo and Bill Lazor run whatever they want.

The primary reason you get unbalanced in your play calling in the NFL is circumstantial. You get behind in the score, you start passing more. You go into a two minute drill, you start passing more. You get behind on down & distance, you start passing more. Additionally, if you're running the football and basically ramming into a wall of bodies, you're induced to pass more. It's entirely possible Lazor had free rein, ended up calling an unbalanced offense due to circumstances, and he himself knew he needed to make it a point to be more balanced going forward.

Not that I find it likely. Mike Sherman used to point toward Philbin as being the pass-pass-pass guy. I'm just saying this isn't really confirmation one way or another. We're still just putting together circumstantial evidence to come to a conclusion.

And I mostly point this out because I'm not too keen on Abramson's title for his article as it relates to the content. He overreached.

That is a good point to make. Since Campbell is allowing the coordinators to coach and call plays, I imagine that the offense would be most balanced.

to me the offense looked almost exactly alike with Lazor and Sherman, so the idea points to Philpin as being the problem.

    Great post.

I remember several pressers where Sherman let on the Philbin didn't have the patience to stick w the run if it wasn't working. And that was when Hartline and Bess were the top WRs. I can only imagine he'd ha e even less patience this year.

However, as you pointed out, there were several non Philbin reasons why Miami was one dimensional to start 2015. Falling behind in score and down/distance, no blocking TE or FB, for starters.

Getting Sims back and incorporating Mitchell at FB made a night and day difference, as did finally playing with a lead.

What were the #'s associated with Mitchell as FB?

All I remember is the one that was called back because of holding. Was it as productive as we think vs TENN?

Technically, Mitchell also lined up at fullback in Week 2 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, but that was for only one snap.

Thought the same thing when I read the title. It might actually be the case, but he could've waited a few games to write an article like this. He's making this whole assumption based on one game.

Honest question: Do you find Philbin as blameless as it seems like you do for all of the Dolphins problems this year? You have piles of evidence hitting you from every direction indicating Philbin was a HUGE part of the problem, but you're still so quick to latch onto anything that even remotely hints that maybe it wasn't so much his fault after all.

I don't think all the blame falls squarely on Philbin. Coyle being the stubborn assclown that he was played quite the role as well. Also....at the end of the day the personnel on the field are what determines the outcome of games. It's no secret that we're a completely different team with Albert and Sims healthy, not to mention Cam Wake on defense. Circumstances play a huge role of course, but Queasy deserves about 75% of the blame. He's was the guy in charge.

He didn't have much of an impact on the teams success running the ball. He looked like he had the athletic ability to fill the position, but he didn't hit his blocks particularly well either.

The one that stood out the most to be was a Jonas Grey pitch play where he lead from right inner hash to near the sideline, but kinda just dipped his shoulders and didn't really engage his guy properly.

Two TEs and no FB, it's unheard of and borderline stupid. Half the playbook went out the window with Dion Sims. It definitely ranks up there with Philbin's worst decisions.

I don't think Philbin ever told Sherman to pass, pass, pass. I think he told him to take what the defense gives you, and if they are always giving you the pass then I expect you to always pass. And if they are always giving you good run looks then always run. Its a chicken/egg thing. If you are able to take advantage of pass looks then eventually you'll get good run looks.

So Philbin mandated we take what they give us with the hopes that if it goes well balance will come. Whereas Campbell is probably mandating more balance from the get-go with the idea being that being balanced will hide a lot of warts.

It's up to Lazor to continue to prove that. He may have a shaky OL, but he has weapons everywhere. If our offense starts sputtering again people will be calling for his head.

While I'm was well on the fire Philbin boat for over a year before it happened I think we should be a bit careful before suddenly ascribing every bad thing that happened to him.
After WWIi when the German generals were writing their memoirs a common theme was that all of the bad things happened because of Hitlers interference. Which fed the shilleboth that Germany could have won the war. But when historians looked at the actual records they found that quite a number of the dumb things the German Generals did were their own ideas, and some of their succcesses were from Hitler ordering them to do something over their objections.

One is a seemingly nice guy who may have been over his head here as an HC and the other is one of the greatest megalomaniac mass murderers in history. No, it's not like you went to extremes there. :pointlol:

Dammit I was comparing our assistant coaches to German Generals. I was comparing the minions not the bosses.

Simple rule of life. ambitious people will blame the guy who's not there for the bad things and take credit for his good things themselves.

While I agree with your premise and think our fans need a heavy does of reality most times when it comes to assigning blame....this one particular instance is true. Philbin did interfere fairly regularly with offensive play calling.

Now...we know a couple of the times he did when it resulted in a bad play, but we've honestly never heard if (and likely when) there were positive plays because of that interference.

The point however, is that Lazor didn't have autonomy with Philbin and probably does with Campbell.

DISCLAIMER: This post DOES NOT mean its author is defending Philbin in any way. The author endorsed the firing of Philbin.

FTR, he wasn't comparing their actions, just the view of their power structure. He was in no way saying Philbin was like Hitler or anything like that. He was just using a famous power structure that we all know about.

You clearly don't watch the games if you think our playing calling was unbalanced put of circumstance. It was predictable and unbalanced. The run attempts were thoughtless and seemed like we ran it just to fill the quota so we could pass the ball again. It clearly didn't work, which lead to more "circumstance" for passing. Bad play calling begat more bad play calling. I could tell a huge difference last Sunday. I'm sure tennessee could as well.

    you're welcome

Its too early to judge who or what was the problem, its only been one game. If we go on a 3-4 game win streak with a balanced offense I'd certainly point to Philbin but we don't really know enough to say whether or not he was holding the offense back. Now I do think Coyle was garbage and needed to go, he was clearly an issue with the defense. We have two opponents that we should be in Tenn last week and Texas this week, if we can do that and give a good showing in New England I think we can get excited. Right now I'm in a holding pattern about getting excited about this team.

I think our offense was scripted and Philbin was too queasy to get off script when it wasn't working. That's how it looked to me.

I have suspected that Philbin was interfering, and I also suspect that Cambo won't, so we will see going forward, but that last game looked almost like a different offense, so there already seems to be heavy evidence that Philbin was dictating the offense.
