What I think hes trying to say is that we should of taken Quinn if we wanted to fill the QB job because most people thought he was the best QB available. So he thinks we should of done that because QB is a bigger priority then WR/KR. I think thats what you meant but correct me if Im wrong.
Alot of teams passed on Brady Quinn and if Cleveland didn't jump back into the 1st round to get him there was a pretty decent chance that he would have made it to the 2nd round. Draft position means nothing in regard to how a player will play once he's drafted. 6th round pick if I remember correctly.
Its no problem. I just can't understand what else it could mean if its not that. The quote reads exactly that.
No that is exactly what I was trying to say. I was no trying to say Ted Ginn Jr was going to be bad or that Brady Quinn is better then John Beck because he is a first round pick.
I dont think he was expecting any different from the guys who turned a "should I ask this girl out" thread into a 100+ page dissertation.
I'm reminded of the John Gruden quote of last year "Its TC rookie and your signing bonus won't help you now!"
We know romper room has been off for hours, and you're just sitting with a koolaide buzz and nothing to do till teddy gets done drying.
I mean i hope y'all are right, don't get me wrong, I want Ginn to breakout and become an all-pro, but it just seems his development has been even slower than I had anticipated.
Boik, do you think a lot of what were are reading in blogs and hearing from reports are some mis-information from the FO ? Put out there to purposely be deceptive and throw other teams off ? I know they play cat & mouse games, just look at NE & Bill Belicheat, and of course who did he learn from, none other than Bill Parcells. Any chance of this or am I just grasping here ?
Ginn has actually been developing very nicely since he came into the league. His route running has improved, the game has slowed down for him making it an easier adjustment and caught 34 of 36 balls last year despite having a horrendous QB situation. If his adjustment to the level of play does take more time to develop than usual, its because he hasn't played the Wide Receiver position that long. He came out of High School as the top Defensive Back in the nation. Was an All-American I believe. He went to OSU and became a WR. He went to OSU for three years and then declared for the draft. You look at his time as a WR, it will show you that this is his fifth year of experience total at the position compared to a guy like Ernest Wilford who has 5 years of experience in this league at the same position. Ginn is a great talent that, if given the time, can develop into a playmaker.
GIK thanks bro, you know we're all sorta making up debate stuff just to pass the time til Aug 9th It can't come soon enough. But just a few months ago (on that other site, when we were all there) many of us (including myself) waxed gleefully about how we thought the team finally had a good draft in 2007, how so many had contributed in 2007, and how it was all turning around.....it seems so long ago now. I'm just really worried about Beck & Ginn. We have to have these guys contribute this year, and so far the TC blogs and articles seem to put a real damper on my enthusiasm.
I guess you are right, I am jumping the gun a little aren't I ? I'm just worried that is all. Those reports about Beck & Ginn the last couple of days have me worried.
As for the original question, I think the draft class overall was a pretty good one. We got Ginn whose a good player and can contribute in several different positions. We got a Quarterback that some may not have faith in right now but has the talent to succeed in this league. We got a future Pro Bowl Center in Satele and a few other guys that will contribute. Looking at the list of the draft picks, we are looking at possibly five starters this year from that draft class. (Ginn, Beck, Satele, Mauia and Fields). In the future, we could have up to seven starters total. The five mentioned previously, Smith and Soliai. Soliai can be very good if he keeps up the work ethic. Smith is likely to contribute on ST's for now but may develop into a starting LB for us in the future. It's unlikely but still a possibility. I think the draft overall was a success.
Then a lot of you guys think that was just to do Quincy a favor ? Do you guys think it was a serious look ? I couldn't believe we'd have sunk that low to take someone out of the game 3 years to give them a look.
It was just a tryout to throw his name out there. Probably one of their mind games. I don't expect him to sign with this team anytime soon. Only way I see him here is if our QB's injured. His initial workout went pretty smooth though. Despite not playing in almost three years, he reported in good shape.
Well he was the "Golden (Domer) Boy" and you know how his handsome looks, and extra muscular body, gave him the "star" power we seem to lack here. ESPN saw him and I think still sees him as a "golden boy" who will bring in ratings for them. I have to tell you, at the time of the draft I was just about throwing something at the TV when Ginn's name was announced instead of Quinn. I still wonder what would have happened had he come here and had a chance to start.
Yeah but how many teams were 1-15 last year due mainly to very poor drafting the previous 5 or 6 years ? We more than any other team in the NFL needed those draft picks to succeed and start in their 1st year.
Oh that's okay.....just looking for debate and we got it. It ended up being an informative thread anyways
Hey problem guys, we got a healthy debate about Quinn out of it, and that is cool.....just something to pass the time til Aug 9th....we are all jonesin' for that !
One thing I think we do is over enthuse sometimes about players and Satale might be good, very good, but do we really know if he is elite ? Just because he started last year, does that mean he is above average and "a future Pro-Bowl center" ???? Remember how bad we were, 1 and 15......just because a guy started at center, as a rookie on a 1 and 15 team doesn't mean he's gonna be an all-pro. It will be interesting to see what happens next year to Satale and if he is replaced by Sporano or not.
Geez...after one disastrous season (and Cam may have been the bulk of the problem with that) you have written off every 2007 acquisition except Satele ?? It's generally accepted that it takes 3 yrs for a draft class to be truly evaluated...let's not jump the Ginn (er ugh gun) here...
Exactly. No we can't evaluate Satele as "elite" yet. On the other hand, not many Rookies come in this league and start 16 games at center. Its a very difficult position, and he did perform well. Ginn did "ok" last year. One thing he did do was improve, some would say greatly, from begining to the end of the season. The staff has repeatedly praised his progress and play during the off season and camp. He looks to be developing on schedule, perhaps even a little ahead for a 2nd year WR. Beck, undoubtedly had the toughest road to travel, just by the nature of the position. It did not help that it appears we had a very inept coaching staff. Nothing can replace the experience and tough times he experienced last year. The only question in my mind is, did it do more harm then good. He doesn't get a complete pass on his performance. As it stands right now, he is on the team, fighting to start. He really will have to be a wait and see. Overall I don't think this class can be labled anything but young and under evaluation.
maybe you should quit listening to the stupid reporter blogs, and listen to our Coach. HE seems to like Ginn just fine.. I think the premise of this thread is silly, and not particularly well thought out ZQ.. I was surprised to see this from your hand.
Now that was mean I know I sounded alarmist, but after reading Omar's blog thread I got way depressed
