I fear you are right and we are doomed to mediocrity for many years to come

Rivers didn't become a chess master until the past couple years. That's not disputable. During his first 6 years he never attempted more than 486 passes, as he had LT and a good Chargers defense to lean on.

Big Ben had a 104.1 rating in year 4 because the offense and team wasn't placed on his shoulders. He attempted 404 passes. Not a lot was asked of him. It was about great defense & the ground game, and Ben was placed in easy passing situations. He averaged 414 pass attempts through his first 8 years, and at no point during his first 9 years did he ever sniff a back-to-back season avg of 596 attempts, 4600 yards, 36 TD, 65.7% completions like he did in 2013-14. Ben has really come into his own during the past couple years, and that's not disputable.

Brees's 104.1 rating in year 4 was on a mere 400 attempts. Like Rivers, he had Tomlinson to lean on, so not a lot was asked of him. His subsequent 3-season-avg from years 5 to 7 when suddenly asked to throw more often [569 attempts]: 91.6 Rating, 4139 yards, 26 TD, and 15 INT, with a total of 4 4th Qtr Comebacks. Sounds like Tannehill's 2014 season- 590 attempts, 92.8 Rating, 4045 yards, 27 TD, and 12 INT... except that Tannehill had 7 4th Qtr Comebacks during his first 3 years. Brees didn't become the Brees that we've come to know until his 8th season. Prior to that, he never surpassed 30 TD or 4425 yards. Since then he's averaged 4958 yards, 37 TD, and 100.5 Rating.... with 18 4th Qtr Comebacks.

Tannehill shouldn't even be averaging the amount of passes he's been the last 2-3 years. 590 attempts just to get 4045 yards? LOL ..... as I've said before the only impressive stat to me about his year last year was his TD:INT. But then again we're talking about a QB that doesn't push the ball vertically very often.

All that is neither here nor there. In regards to your argument, all you're doing is adjusting what happened with those other QB's to fit your narrative. They took major steps in those years using the metrics you gave me (i.e. rating and completion average). Of course now you're tossing around all kinds of other variables and subjective material.

Tannehill attempted a combined 48 passes against Tenn & Houston. When the defense and ground game are supporting the QB, he doesn't need to pass a lot, and thus his passing game can be more efficient with less placed on his shoulders at a time when he's not yet capable of calling the game at the LOS like the top veterans of the league who possess the advanced mental skill set to handle such a load.

LULZ, watch the games dude. That tells you all you need to know. I provided the stats as an additional bonus to what the eyeballs tell b/c you seem like someone who knows more about statistical stuff and less about the actual game being played. Reminds me of an ex poster named Shouright in that regard.

Oh right, you've got those special eyes that see the games differently from people who don't share your opinion. That's a tired argument on the internet. On a statistical front, I could never be like Sho. That guy has way more patience for crushing numbers than 99% of humanity.

I get a sense you're asking as if to imply we somehow ask our WR's to run longer routes, which would be surprising assuming you've been watching all of the Tanny era. Almost everything has been short comeback/curls.

Certainly not this season, like when we've been trying to come from behind and needed to extend plays to make long throws ala weeks 3, 4 and 8 (this one).

No "special" eyes needed here my friend. Just normal eyes, the type that most fans with a common football IQ can relate to. Yours just happen to be unspecial apparently, and thus you ask for the explanation of something that really doesn't need further explaining.

On a volume basis, most of the stuff is short-intermediate. 194 of Tanny's pass attempts have been behind the LOS up to the 11-20 yards. That represents 88% of his attempts this year.

You must loving being sub 500 then. I don't get the love for such a mediocre player that has never won a big game for his team.

I would love to see a birdseye view of every route this year. I know there are guys running deep and wide open, but Tannehill is not throwing that ball. They showed one last night. I also know there are a ton or routes were everyone runs like an 8 yard curl.

Why no slants like the one Matthews took to the house? That was like the 2nd or 3rd slant I've seen.

    Check that out.

The game plan appeared to be to attack the sidelines and it worked for a few times. NE has talented linebackers and an elite safety. Slants may not be prudent.
