This past week, my wife Jennifer and I took our sons Braedon, 6 and Tristan, 11 to their first regular season Miami Dolphins game. Before the game Tristan would ask me all kinds of questions about the Miami Dolphins. Whos their best player IMO, will the Dolphins win tonight? I told him my favorite player was Jarvis Landry, because of how hard he worked and the passion for the game he would always show. It was why I was wearing a Jarvis Landry jersey, only the third jersey Ive ever owned in my thirty five years of being a Dolphins fan. Obviously as the game progressed, it wasnt looking good for the Dolphins. As a Dad though, I can tell you that it couldnt have been better. All the questions of.."are the Dolphins this.." and "Will the Dolphins do that" ...had become.."Hey Dad, do you think WE will do this.." and "When will WE be a really good team like the Pats". Tristan had become a real fan with his Dad that night, and it made me so proud. I took my Jarvis Landry jersey off as we were still at the game because I didnt want to get it dirty, and my son asked if he could wear it. He put it on, and wore it proudly out of Gillette stadium that night, not a bigger Dolphins fan could be found. That night back at the hotel, his mom and I watched as a little boy who had never folded a shirt in his life, meticulously folded that Jersey and placed it on the chair next to his bed.

    Best Dolphins Game Ever.

You and I may disagree on our perspective on the Fins, but that is a great story, and you must be beaming right now, that is fantastic feeling, congrats!

There's not many of us Tristan's running around out there, and fewer still that are Fin fans, I wonder how many, but in case you didn't know the etymology, it is often mistakenly put as a latin name that means sorrow from triste, but it is in fact a Welsh name from Drystan, which means clanking swords, just in case you didn't know already.

I'm Welsh and German, but I got the name from my father, who was named from the Vagnerian opera, Tristan and Isolde, and most of my life I thought it was a German name, as it is a popular name in Germany, but I found out it was actually a Welsh name that meant clanking swords, and my favorite movies are sword fighting movies, go figure, no coincideneces? silly Freud, lol.

    Cheers!

We named him Tristan from the story of Tristan and Isolde as well...though to be honest I thought the Arthurian part of the story was really cool so that added to part of it. Was also one of the few names we both liked..lol

I found that most Tristan's in recent years I've heard about had been named from Legends of the Fall, where Brad Pitt's character was named Tristan, I always figured the wife won that battle, lol, but the women folk seem to like the name a lot.

There are some great Tristan or Tristram, knight errant stories attached to the Arthurian tales, but he does get overlooked a lot because he wasn't very involved in the "grail quest", but he was the only Knight who was a match for Lancelot, he was also a pretty cool character in the 2004 King Arthur movie, where he has that hawk he can talk to.

Great Story... What being a football fan and a Father is all about. Great to share this passion we have with our kids and families and watch them embrace it. So happy for you.

    Great story.

Enjoy them while they are young, they grow so fast! Mine are 20 and 17 already. Seems like yesterday they were your kid's ages.

    Cherish this time.

    (The teenage years suck!!)

    That was a sweet story.

Now you've gotta get Braedon a Reshad Jones jersey so you balance the best offensive player with the best defensive player.

    Slightly left of center
Me too. Mostly because I'm raising daughters who don't give a ish about football and think I'm crazy when I watch it. So I will never get to experience that particular joy. Cool story and thanks for sharing.

I have plenty of other moments that don't involve football with my princesses so don't feel too sorry for me, I'm a lucky guy ;)

Not many Tristans in Germany, I'm afraid. There are a few, but it's rare to come across someone named Tristan.

    Nevertheless, cool story:up:

Yeh you dont get those kind of things that give you perspective very often, but this was one of them whhere the outcome of the game was less important then the experience.
