I would love for us to select him. Ragland gets to the ball in a hurry.

I think Left Tackle is a really underrated potential need for the Dolphins in this upcoming draft.

Depending on Branden Albert is riskier than Cameron Wake or Brent Grimes in my eyes. You've seen those guys play at a dominant level this year, Albert hasn't been bad but hasn't been himself, and I think he's got a bigger reason to give you doubt he can get back there.

Still would be tough to pick LT if Hargreaves is there.

I'd rather sign a younger left tackle in free agency like Cordy Glenn and part ways with Albert.

LT is a need (I noted this in Club a few weeks back). But, at the core is the middle of the OL. We aren't doing anything without two upgrades at OG. And, I think LT with Albert is risky but could last. Going LT early (though there could be a franchise one there) could just put us back where we were at the start of the year. Any reliance on these OG's going into next year and Tannenbaum as well as Ross himself need to be gone. I would not mind going with a player who can be a LT but start him out at OG if he can play there. There are a couple 1st round OT prospects who could fit there.

QB is something to consider. But it's tough with needs at CB (2), S, DE, ILB/OLB, OG (2), and TE. We may find a CB from what is on the team but will need anotehr starter.

    Well away from here
I think we have to explore trading Tannehill to the Rams and simply roll on with what we have. We need to address the offensive line, defensive end and corner immediately. Unfortunately for yes corner is also a big issue.

I like Taylor more than most and the number of snaps he's logged this year will only help him. But we need at least one more quality player at that position.

I wonder if the reduced rookie wage scale will impact decisions about Free Agency. Will players be more inclined than before to seek top dollar on the FA market than work out advanced deals with the home team? If so, and you add that to the shorter duration of rookie contracts compared to years past, we might see a greater need to narrow the focus of the first 2 rounds to players who possess the potential to contribute early on [or at least avoid players perceived to be developmental].

Interesting. Maybe something like Janoris Jenkins, Alec Ogletree, Cody Wichmann and a #1. To this day I'm ok with Matt Moore, for now and at least until they draft a future franchise QB. The question about Tannehill from day one is whether he's a capable but limited checkers player or the chess master that we need who just needed to develop. He's limited so far, let's face it, but we'll know more if Zac Taylor actually lets RT audible. At 4-7 what do we have to lose? Let the kid audible away, answer some questions in the last five games.

QB: It's tough to say where the team should go. You can get a good LB in free agency, you can get a good CB in free agency, and definitely a C or a G. What you can't get very often is a quarterback. One possibility would be to trade Tannehill to get draft ammo, go get Lynch and then use the cap room opened up to cover the rest of the team's bases. There really is no way to get better in the NFL faster than to get a great HC and a great QB. Period. I don't care if it's a HOF DT like Suh, DE like Taylor, LT like Long, no matter what anyone says. There is literally no way to get better faster than a great QB.

I'm not sure how much it would cost to move up from say 5-6 to 1, but perhaps they can do it with Tannehill.

LB: Now all that said, sometimes there are opportunities that teams create that last ages. Top rated quarterbacks are around every single year (franchise QBs that's another story). What would fans say if the Phins grabbed Smith at say 6 and then traded up with their 2 and their 3 to grab Reggie Ragland. Then they use their available cash for a CB and Alex Mack (tell Tannehill to take a pay cut). It would be interesting having a LBing core of Jenkins, Ragland, and Smith. That's a truly dominant front 7. One thing I would really love to see from the Dolphins is a total investment in the defense year after as the Ravens did, trying to create a truly dominant unit.

If there's one thing that stands out to me about the NFL it's that you can often find players who rise up to fill needs and players that surprise you in later rounds, but there are only so many dominant ones or dominant units for that matter. I would much rather the Dolphins, rather than try to fill needs through their high draft picks, try instead to create something unbelievable. The front seven is where I would look.

Jenkins, Ragland, and Smith. Let that idea digest in your minds a bit.

I have been putting off evaluation of Carson Wentz for a while even as draft twitter treated him like a shiny new toy that they'd found. I think Dane Brugler was trying to push him at one point as the best senior QB prospect even better than Connor Cook, which is absurd I think. After Wentz suffered a broken wrist, it seems Brugler has settled for ranking Wentz second to Cook.

I love the way the guy moves and throws the ball. Love his size. He's got quickness and body control to him, for a big guy. He looks like a pro. He throws like a pro. He's got a significant amount of cleanup to do in his footwork and mechanics but that's not that big a deal. He's just a really big, really proficient thrower of the football with a hose for an arm that can fit the ball into tight spaces and sling it accurately all over. It's like watching Brandon Weeden with legs. When the measurements come out I would be shocked if he didn't have big hands (10+ inches). Sometimes you can just tell by the way the football comes out.

The thing I'm not sure about yet though is whether he actually sees defenders. He puts the ball in danger of help defenders quite a bit. Is that just not caring, being too aggressive squeezing the football in certain spots? Or is that him not seeing people? Or is it him being late? Thing about going after a North Dakota State Bison like this is you don't want to get Brock Jensen'd...have a guy who shows all the skills on tape but then when the competition starts moving a lot faster looks completely flustered and lost.

If he's healthy enough for the Senior Bowl that would be a big plus for him, big chance to show he belongs.

I'm pretty sure I like but don't necessarily love both Paxton Lynch and Connor Cook at the quarterback position. That's usually fine for a 1st round grade for me if you're in need at that position, but not necessarily an "I need to have" this guy.

Still haven't made up my mind on Jared Goff. Some of his games are outrageous. Some, not so much. Physically he's not much to speak of and that's becoming much more important nowadays.

I was reading through this HOPING you were going to talk about him....just started to really look at him this AM. Gotta tell you...his play vs where we might get him in the draft, he looks like a gift from heaven. This is a kid you can maybe get in round 3...with him being out for alot of the year with his wrist injury maybe he falls that far. But god...talk about developmental potential.

What I liked about him was how he was in the pocket. He made quick decisions...showed the lateral agility to buy time. Stands tall..which I guess at 6' 6" isnt hard...but hes got a gorgeous frame. Definitley has the frame to put on some muscle...seeing maybe a Big Ben kinda guy....

He just seems like the perfect scenario for us at QB...

Q: First off, how's the wrist feeling?
A: It's feeling good, it's been a week now since surgery. I received some reports and everything is looking good. Just takes time.

Q: When do you think is a realistic expectation to get back on the field?
A: Right now it's hard to say. It depends how well the bones heal. The initial reports said 6-to-8 weeks and I think that will be fairly accurate. We'll find out more closer to the end of that time frame.

Q: Take me back to your high school days, what was your recruitment like?
A: My recruitment was interesting. As a junior in high school, I had some injury problems with my arm and shoulder from baseball so I didn't play quarterback as a junior. I played a little wide receiver, linebacker, and safety. I also broke my thumb that year so I even when my arm was rehabbed, I stayed at linebacker. It was tough for me, but as a senior, I grew a little more and got bigger. I started both ways at quarterback and safety and was able to prove myself. So my recruitment was very different. Around here, NDSU (North Dakota State) and UND (North Dakota) knew I was a big, athletic kid, but not much more than that. Most of my offers came after my senior season and it was mostly Missouri Valley teams and a bunch of FCS teams. Central Michigan was the one FBS team that recruited me hard. It's been an interesting path for me.

Q: What would you consider your best strength as a quarterback?
A: Hard to say just one. I can make all the throws. My mental side is a strength as far as understanding defense schemes and our playbook. I'm able to change plays when needed. I think that sets me apart.

Q: What do you do you think you still need to work on?
A: Biggest area that comes to mind is consistency with my footwork. It's an area all quarterbacks need to try and find consistency and develop. One play it looks beautiful and the next it's erratic. So consistency with footwork is what I need to work on the most.

Q: You participated in the Elite-11 quarterback camp this past summer as a counselor, what was that experience like?
A: It was cool to be around some of the other top quarterbacks in the country and the coaches like Coach (Trent) Dilfer. And to be around the high school kids. There were a lot of talented quarterbacks and people who know the position so it was a great experience. And after seeing where I stacked up against some of the other quarterbacks in the country, it was a great confidence booster as well.

Q: You had the chance to work with a lot of talented college quarterbacks, who stood out to you the most?
A: All of them did, it was hard to say just one. I thought we all got along tremendously. There was a reason all eight of us were there with the way we can throw it and carry ourselves.

Q: When watching film of an opponent's defense, what specifically are you looking for?
A: I'm trying to see the whole picture. I look for tendencies. For example, the safety is the biggest tell, but so are linebackers and corners. I want to see the moving parts to get an idea of the defense. Is the safety lining up inside the hash, what are the blitz indicators, things like that. Trying to find tips.

Q: There are so many layers to the quarterback position, what do you think is the most important trait for a quarterback to be successful?
A: A lot of guys have tons of talent, but it boils down to the mental side of things. Preparing and knowing your offense and studying the defense. Being able to read and react quickly. The mental side is often overlooked.

Q: Has the NFL always been a dream of yours, did you think that would be an option?
A: Absolutely. As a kid growing up, I was in my Carolina Panthers jersey on Halloween. I wanted to be a quarterback. I thought I would play college baseball as well, but that didn't work out. My personality fits football better, it's a much faster-paced game. It's the type of guy that I am. I always wanted to play at the highest level and after I got here, I thought I could play professionally. It might be a reality soon.

Q: Is there a quarterback you look up to or try to model your game after?
A: Aaron Rodgers is extremely fun. I love watching him and Tom Brady because of the way they control the offense. They have the unique ability to put the ball wherever they want. They extend and make plays outside the given play. Those are guys I learn form.

Q: Coming from the FCS-level, do you feel like you're NFL ready or do you anticipate a large jump at the next level?
A: Without a doubt there will be a jump as a FCS guy. But whether you're from Division two or three or whatever, you have to answer the bell and show you're capable. The game will definitely speed up and I feel like I'm ready.

Q: You've had one of the top left tackles helping block for blindside the last two seasons, what makes Joe Haeg such a talented player?
A: Joe is just rock solid. A guy we can lean on, trust and run behind. And me as a quarterback, he's my security blanket, protecting my backside, which keeps me confident. He's a great leader. He's come a long way from the skinny little kid to who he is now. I'm happy he's getting the recognition he deserves and he should be playing on Sundays. We've become good friends so it's been great to go through the process together.

Q: Fast forward five years from now, where do you see yourself?
A: I see myself starting in the NFL and hopefully winning lots of ballgames. That's the dream, you want to be in the league, but it only counts if you're winning.

I caught some flack for saying this on twitter but seriously, Jeff Driskel?

There's only 3 spots left and they've used a spot on Jeff Driskel. Who is next, Jacob Coker?

Connor Cook, Kevin Hogan and Brandon Doughty all need to be there, at a minimum. Dak Prescott, Trevone Boykin, Cody Kessler, Matt Johnson and Brandon Allen probably deserve to go.

CK, thank you for reminding me(us) about the draft thread in Club Giants thread....with all that has been going on with me I had completely forgot about one of my favorite threads to come to. Seriously, Jeff Driskel????? They have got to be kidding me too..at best to me he should be an FCS Div.2 QB at that.....I Have been meaning to ask you, please forgive me if I missed it in an earlier post, what do you think of Brad Kaaya' s game at present and do you think he has good pro QB Potential? Thank you again.

I really wish we could afford to draft Treadwell..imvho, they don't come along very often....that is the COMPLETE Receiver who loves to kick AZZ in the blocking game as well..especially downfield..I know a lot of our members get a little upset that Lamar don't hit the homerun very often, but have y'all ever seriously watched the downfield blocking by our receivers? It is virtually non existent and it is near impossible to break the long one without that help.....Lamar has plenty of speed and Miami better 're sign him and OV. PERIOD.

Man, I do not understand the dislike of OV by so many of you and I hate to disappoint you all but OV is having a great year and he WILL be getting his much earned and deserved SECOND contract with the Miami Dolphins....He is going nowhere else...compare his first 4 years to JT's and you might then understand d his value to our team, and he is only 24. Let's Go ahead and draft the players and fill positions of need instead of one's that we already are good to greatness soon at.....WADR.

I'll be the first to admit OV has been a monster the last 6 weeks or so. If that's the guy going forward then yeah sign me up. I never had an issue with OV anyways, I just didn't think he deserved the 10 mil a year his agent had rumored to be asking for.

That at said even if you bring him back i think we need to add a pass rusher in this draft. Wake is coming off a big injury...I think he's the kind of guy to recover but regardless.

Pot involved. This caused Shane Ray to slide and the Broncos nabbed themselves a good prospect, same for the Dolphins perhaps?

My feeling is not likely, especially if the rumors of his me-first attitude are true. You put a guy like that in South Beach and you may have a world of disappointment coming your way.

QB Patrick Mahomes, II, Texas Tech (Class: 2018)

A year ago I was on and on about QB Paxton Lynch of Memphis for the 2016 draft. He was the guy I thought you need to watch for next year. He's getting his due attention now, I feel.

The guy you need to watch now for a year from now? Texas Tech QB Patrick Mahomes. Holy **** what a beast. I'm not sure he's not the best draft eligible quarterback in this draft. He reminds me of Carson Palmer in the pocket but a taller, more prepared Johnny Manziel overall.

You want some crazy *** production?

Last year Mahomes was sort of in and out of games as a redshirt freshman. He threw 5 passes against Oklahoma State, 7 against Kansas State, 11 against TCU...but Davis Webb was the starter. I never liked Webb that much. Webb did well enough at 211 of 345 for 2539 yards, 24 TDs and 13 INTs in 8 games, with 1 rushing TD tacked on. The offense averaged 30 points per game under Webb.

Then Patrick Mahomes took over for the final four games. He had a rough outing against Texas, his first start ever...just 13 of 21 for 109 yards with no TDs or INTs before getting knocked out of the game by Quandre Diggs and having Vinny Testeverde Jr. play in his place. But after that game, Mahomes went 80 of 141 for 1319 yards, 14 TDs and 2 INTs...in THREE games. He tacked on 71 rushing yards. This is a redshirt freshman. And this year? Ludicrous. He's 336 of 517 for 4283 yards, 32 TDs and 14 INTs with 484 rushing yards and 10 more rushing TDs. They average 47 points per game.

People are going to dismiss it because it's Texas Tech and Kliff Kingsbury's system, Kingsbury himself having once been a King Kong stat gathering quarterback way back in the day (think Timmy Chang, etc). But you know what? That kind of system is so common now in college. Everyone runs it. The man has scored 42 touchdowns. He throws a ****ing beautiful ball. He scrambles around and makes things happen on the run. He executes from the pocket.

This is a baseball guy, like Colin Kaepernick. Except unlike Kaepernick, he doesn't come out with odd mechanics and tendencies that keep reminding you he's a baseball guy. He learned to hit a curve ball from Alex Rodriguez, shagged fly balls for Robin Ventura during batting practice, as his dad was an MLB player for over a decade. But on the football field, he looks like Carson Palmer in the backfield and a taller Johnny Manziel when he's not in the backfield. He loves the sport despite his baseball background. He draws acclaim for blocking down the field for his running backs (something you see Jameis Winston doing a lot). Teammates swear if he couldn't throw the ball he'd be a defensive end.

You know, I gave Johnny Manziel a lot of flack coming out. I think a Patrick Mahomes really emphasizes all the reasons I was right to do that by comparison. There's a similarity there but it's obvious on film which guy watches more film and works more carefully at his craft. Mahomes isn't known as an all-night, every-night partier. And he's also a lot bigger than Manziel and so there's less worry about injury.

Now, perhaps I'm early on this one. It's not his time yet, to start getting on him like he's a top 5 or top 10 pick in the draft. I have to say the chances of him coming out in 2016 as a redshirt sophomore have to be virtually nil so it doesn't matter anyway all this stuff about Tannehill and where you'd take the guy, etc. Don't put all that on me. He makes lots of mistakes and they're pretty typical developmental mistakes. He's down 21 points and scrambles around, decides to heave it 50+ yards down the field hoping the safety can't get there in time but he does. Or he's executing a scripted play like a no-look screen and doesn't notice the defensive back that read it and is getting a jump on the ball while he's releasing it. It's 4th & 17 and you're down 28 points, have to scramble out of the pocket and can't find any of your receivers so you throw up a lollipop and hope someone on your team finds it and comes down with it but the other side gets it instead. Stuff you see in a young player and you understand.

I'm just plotting trajectory and looking at raw talent here, and I have to say...I'm pretty floored. DJ gonna love this kid, lol.

Gonna be fun to watch Draft Twitter discover Patrick Mahomes in the coming months/year. (/says the guy who discovered him today)

Depending on what Mackensie Alexander checks in at size/speed wise at the combine, he might be a potential boom-bust corner on the perimeter, with bust being a necessary move to the slot where he becomes something like an upgraded version of Brandon Boykin. As a man-cover guy there's a chance he might be vulnerable in the NFL to big long-striding receivers capable of eating cushion in a hurry.

It has to be Hargreaves, Ramsey, or Alexander with the first pick. That secondary is depleted, Grimes is on his way out, and Brice McCain isn't a starter.
2nd rd get O line help, 3rd RB, no way Miller is staying.

No doubt you've watched more Clemson football that me, but I view Alexander as a pretty safe pick, high floor/high ceiling. Good not great size but a powerful build, speed, quicks, physical, competitive, confident- potential shut down corner. I'd be happy with the pick, and I'm not so sure that he isn't the best CB coming out, Hargreaves included. Mackensie Alexander is a heck of a player.

I think he has really good potential with a high ceiling but I just can't justify a top 10 pick for a Shutdown Corner with 0 interceptions in his career...CB now a days has to have it all and he looks to be excellent against the run but imho a CB's #1 job is still to get us that INT., turnovers are so important.....game changing plays.....like I said....I like him but just not in the top #10..

The question is whether or not the lack of interceptions is due to him rarely being challenged, and if that's the case it's an indication of how good he really is. I want to see more of his hands and ball skills as well.
