Mets are after Zobrist aND met with his representatives at the meetings. Braves and Zona discussed Shelby Miller for AJ Pollack.
He makes sense for them. Cubs have been connected to him, but I can't see his cost being worthwhile like it would on other clubs, and right now the hole on the roster is CF, which is one of the few places he doesn't play.
I don't remember but didn't the Yankees low ball him money wise too? Especially compared to Seattle? 2 years though is a lot though, can't blame him for that if he wanted to really maximize his value. Either way, it's funny because really at the time based on team needs Ellsbury should have signed with Seattle and Cano should have stayed with the Yankees.
They offered 7/175 which has a higher APV than he is getting now, they didn't Lester him no......hey believe me I am all for players getting their money but you have to weigh everything. At the end of that 7 years he probably could get another 1-2 year contract, money wasn't the problem.....now he is miserable stuck there with an unmovable contract unless they take a wash on it...
He was my second choice for the Cubs after Price. Maybe the dominoes start to fall now. MLB free agency is so slow...
What does Ellsbury have to do with this? Cano was worth more than what Ellsbury ended up getting and was a better player. Didn't Cano himself say he felt disrespected by the Yankees during contract talks? Wasn't it something more about the years than the money, it was two years ago so I'm not 100%. I remember the Yankees once they figured they wouldn't be able to sign Cano turned their attention to Ellsbury. But there were hard feelings during those talks. EDIT: If you google "Cano disrespect" you get a lot of results, whether it's true or not all depends on who you want to believe.
Zimmerman and Cueto are the two FA SPs that scare me the most in terms of injury risks. With that being said if Zimmerman didn't have a drop off in stuff last year he probably would have gotten a bigger deal.
So the market for a decent FA pitcher is now starts at 20M APV, ironically due in part to Porcello I would think....
Nothing to do with what Porcello got, MLB contracts have been going up for years. A decent MLB pitcher is going to get 20 million while legit ACEs will get upper 20s. That's why it was silly when everyone was up in arms last year about how the Sox were giving Procello ace money because it wasn't true, it's the going rate for pitchers now especially for teams wanting to keep the contract length down.
Oh I agree about the upward trend sure, however if you an agent worth your salt and you have a pitcher, you are absolutely pointing to that Porcello contract as a foundation and rightfully so. FWIW I think RP is a better pitcher than what he showed last year, but you get my point.... You guys signed Chris Young yesterday, nice 4th OF choice who mashes LHP. He will do well in that park...
Cano's agent was Jay Z. He wanted an Arod like contract. The Yankees were not going to go down that road. Of course he uses "disrepect" players do it all the time when they want more money. Just because they over paid for Ellsbury doenst mean they lowballed Cano. Considering his defense is utter garbage now and there is talk of moving him to 1b soon... Perhaps the Yankees knew more about his attitude then they were letting on.
Looking back it might have been wise the Yankees let Cano walk but also unwise to sign Ellsbury to that deal so it works both ways. And I agree players use the "disrespect" angle all the time which is code for they didn't give me what I want. But I never said the Yankees low balled Cano. In my response I was asking a question if they did and even said I didn't remember. The Yankees best offer was 7/175, Seattle gave him 10/240 if he was chasing the money (like what most players do) it was a no brainer.
Of course an agent is going to use Porcello as an example, just like how Porcello's agent used Homer Bailey in his. And the next pitcher is going to use Zimmerman. And yes I agree Porcello was a better pitcher than he showed in the 1st half of the season last year. The only thing I didn't love about him was too many home runs for a "ground ball pitcher". He's a solid #3 pitcher, people thinking he was an ace was an obvious mistake. As for Young, if he's truly a 4th OFer the Sox could have done worse but reports are he's going to be more than just a 4th OFer which worries me a little, I really will be surprised if JBJ or Castillo are with the team come April. It's a 2 year 13 million dollar deal so it's a fair contract.
Hey if a team is going to be stupid that is on them.... If you recall that is how Arod ended up in Texas
Wouldnt surprise me if he gets 300+Ab's as a "fourth" OF. Lets face it Bradley is going to struggle at times.
Arod's first contract was absolutely worth it though. One of the rare long term deals that worked out.
I agree, that's what makes me nervous as Young just isn't good against RHPs and there's really not a heck of a lot of LHSPers in the AL East right now. But again it's not like I dislike the signing, just hope he's put in a position to be successful instead of thinking he's someone he's not.
I actually just read that they have 5 OF's so yeah somebody has to go I would think. JBJ looks to be the guy unless the Sox are going to eat a bunch of cash on Castillo's contract..
Nice work if you can get it, he made 7.5 last year and now 13.......20.5M in 3 years as a one trick pony....damn...
Who's the 5th? Holt? If so that doesn't mean they have to move someone. I just think if someone is moved it will be JBJ. Life is good if you're a pro baseball player.
Hanley. Now I know they said he will play 1B, dude that experiment is going to end probably around Marathon Monday.....Ramirez at 1B is must see baseball this year....
Hanley is never going to play the OF again unless there's an emergency situation and the Sox don't want to put any of their pitchers in the OF.
Bonds certainly knows how to hit a baseball however I wonder if he'll be any good at it. Sometimes the very best players make terrible coaches because they just know so much and are so good at it they can't actually teach it to players that aren't as talented.
He's going to play 1B, otherwise there's literally nowhere else for him to play. Sox are probably hoping he can be at least passable there for 1 year then move into the DH role after Ortiz retires. You'd think being a former SS he should be able to handle 1B but we'll see.
that's ridonkulous - i mean seriously, just stupid cash. Hopefully sox fans wont have to worry about his record in the post season.
Congrats to Boston. I'm glad that he didn't sign with St Louis, who was apparently his second choice. With him and Zimmerman gone, and Cueto and Grienke apparently headed elsewhere, I'm thinking that I have to give up on the Cubs signing anyone who's more than a 3-4 type starter.
