Ryan Tannehill now helping put together Dolphins’ game plan Posted: 5:56 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2015 EmailFacebookTwitterShareThis By Hal Habib - Palm Beach Post Staff Writer DAVIE — Ryan Tannehill isn’t waiting until Sunday to decide if the change in offensive coordinators will be a plus. Tannehill said Wednesday that he spent the previous two days huddling with de facto coordinator Zac Taylor to help put together the Dolphins’ game plan for Sunday’s meeting with the visiting Baltimore Ravens. It’s not. While trying to avoid piling on to fired coordinator Bill Lazor, Tannehill and the Dolphins made it clear that Tannehill’s voice was at best muted when Lazor formulated game plans early each week. That changed over the past few days since interim coach Dan Campbell asked Tannehill to begin coming to the training complex on Mondays to offer input. Heres to hoping this helps him play better and maybe we will see more bootlegs and use his legs more.He also will have the freedom to audible.
Nuff talk Tanny. Now, prove it to your remaining supporters that it was actually lazor who told you to stare down your potential pass catchers. Yeah good luck with that.
Already posted the inside footage from this. Here it is again - video of the game planning /QB coaching session:
Kind of troubling he had to be asked to come in on Mondays?? You would think if your career was in limbo you may put in some extra work Sep-Dec. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Wait, we weren't allowing the QB to participate in the game plan? What in the holy hell was was wrong this coaching staff, and this organization as a whole. Oh, it just dawned on me... the answer is everything. No wonder we struggle.
Let's not act like Tannehill never succeeded with Lazor. Lazor installed a system that in one year got us the 11th scoring offense in the NFL after we were in the basement for years before. Lots of people thought that was Tannehill's best season. I doubt their relationship and duties were all that different then.
This might be another growing stage for him it's actually good news. Bet he knows who Tom Brady is now and some of the NFL football teams. (That hardknocks episode got to me a little).
My read is that he was asked to come into game planning meetings, not come into the facility on Mondays.
It's just mind boggling that our OC wasn't listening to the guy running the offense. And then refusing to let him audible so when your gameplan isn't working he has to just go out there and eat it no matter what. Lazors offense has some good stuff to it, it's just the overall lack of balance and throwing short of the 1st that's killed us.
Not to mention talent, blitz recognition, hot route recognition, route spacing and design, coaching in general. Outside of that stuff, yeah we were fine.
There were a whole lot of people swearing that Lazor was a great coach being held back by Joe Qeasy Philbin. Now Lazor is a bum. Being a fan means never admitting you're wrong I guess.
A lot of us admit we were wrong. There was a whole thread on that. Do you admit you were wrong about OG being the biggest problem on the team means the team is in good shape? Do you admit you were wrong about Philbin not being a problem?
Lazor and his playcalling has clearly been a problem this season. Doesn't mean he was a problem last season. Maybe defenses figured his system out, with a full offseason to go over tape on it. Maybe that's the problem, his lack of adjustments.
Not a better QB in the league than Tannehill at staring his #1 option and follow him with his eyes AND head AND BODY from the snap! Nobody's better than Tannehill at that!
No, Piston Honda's opinions I respect in many cases but on occasion he's said things I really disagree with. Regarding OG being the biggest problem meaning the team is in good shape, check out post #23: http://www.thephins.com/forums/show...Discuss-the-Offensive-Line-2015-Edition/page2 "The fact that people's main concern is OG says that the rest of the team is in very good shape." And regarding Philbin check out post #12: http://www.thephins.com/forums/show...-Dolphins-notes-10-1-15&p=2665993#post2665993 "I think people are still assuming Miami is a good team, held back by poor coaching. Time to face reality." and post #7 and the exchange afterwards: http://www.thephins.com/forums/showthread.php?87263-Sittling-Sunday-Out&p=2665960#post2665960 "The Philbin problem?" He's also said Dallas Thomas would be fine at OG, which I think falls into the category of things he was wrong about, in post #6 here: http://www.thephins.com/forums/show...ne-will-surprise-people&p=2648797#post2648797 "People doubting Dallas Thomas' ability to play OG without a doubt haven't been paying attention." Anyway, no big deal.. everyone gets things wrong. Just saying..
What I was saying is that IF OG was the biggest problem then yes the team is in good shape. It was response to thr idea that the team would/could miss the playoffs bc they didnt have good guards, which i thought was nonsense. I thought LB, CB, S, and backup RB were bigger issues. I believed the issues on the back 7 would be negated by dominant DL play that only showed up for two games so yes, I was wrong there. I never said Philbin wasn't a problem. I said he wasn't THE problem. I said the team just wasn't any good and yes I was very vocal about how wrong I was for thinking this was a good team. IIRC it was after the Bills game I said they're just a bad team, it's not the HC. A lot of people disagreed. A lot of them felt justified after Tennessee and Houston. Not so much anymore.
Well I won't put words in your mouth so if I misinterpreted I apologize, but that first link above (specifically your response to jw3102 in post #23) is just one of several cases where it sounds like you also think OG was the biggest problem; you just didn't think that was a bad thing because it means the rest of the team is in good shape. There were many other cases like that, and I think that's how most people would interpret what you wrote. Anyway, this season has shown us that we do have bigger issues for sure, and a lot of us (including me) were wrong about the DL. I do remember you often argued he wasn't THE problem, for those who might have misunderstood your position. What I'm talking about is that you often dismissed Philbin as being a serious enough problem that we need to fix. Just take that third link I posted. I think most readers will come to the same conclusion in the discussion that follows (you say the problem existed before Philbin, and that you envy those who believe a better motivator and talent evaluator would have the team at 3-0, which btw isn't that crazy a statement). That btw was not the first time and I think some of the responses you got from others show they're interpreting your position the same way I did. Anyway, if I mischaracterized I apologize, but I think most readers of what you've written on OG and Philbin, if they remember all this from preseason, would agree with me that this is how your arguments came across.
It is very clear to those without an agenda of hate that Tannehill was basically neutered by Lazor's system. Watch the next game and let's see how he looks. Then I will decide.
It's really not that clear. Was Tannehill 'neutered' last season as he went on have his best statistical year as a pro? Cause his coordinator was none other than Bill Lazor, way back then a whole year ago. System and gameplanning and audibling seemed to work perfectly fine; it was far from this misguded disaster people are making Lazor out to be.
I agree. Lazor did not cause Tannehill to lock on receivers, not have pocket awareness, throw the ball short on 3rd downs. There was some bad play calling at times, that I agree with.
He's not using the running game this year like he did last year. Something changed with the system. And NOT for the better lol!
yes, I think the neutering started last year, he was still only running on average 3 times a game..not enough, and only averaged one rollout a game last year, not enough..this year, he sliced em right off.. im gonna hope for the best and that the kid just couldnt do what he wanted to under lazor or sherman..maybe this liberation will free him.. if we see a run unscripted by him early in the game, then maybe so...
OL personnel... Last season the interior was LG Daryn Colledge, Center Samson Satele, and RG Mike Pouncey. James played at both tackle positions after Albert went out. We put up almost 300 yards on the ground in the last 2 games alone. Tannehill was the team's 2nd leading rusher behind Miller. Dallas Thomas, Jamil Douglas, and Billy Turner are all not good to put it nicely. All 3 are depth at best.
He's been coached for 5 years to stay in the pocket, deliver the ball, and let his receivers make plays. Its more likely any runs will be scripted, but yes, it's maddening to watch him stand in a pocket that is collapsing and hold onto the ball and take a sack - or worse get stripped of the ball. I don't mind him staying in the pocket when he can make a play from there, but his clock is askew and he needs to learn to stay on his toes and not stand flatfooted. He has a long stride and takes him too long to engage his feet once he stops his dropback. He needs to find a better QB coach.
Its foolish to decide on one game especialy against a ravens team that is weak against the pass.Let the season play out and then we will see if it was the OC or tannehill.
He's got five games (all pretty much meaningless at this point). Honestly, this just sounds like another excuse for Tannehill not getting it done and nailing down the starting quarterback position. I'll support him as long as he's under center, but going against a Baltimore defense that is ranked in the bottom half of the league in pass defense is hardly a reliable way to make a call on him. In fact, I expect him to have a good game on Sunday...we may even win lol. We'll see...but I don't think Zach Taylor is the answer.
I don't want scripted runs for him, what I want is to see him think "oh ****, pressure is coming I need to move."
1 or 2 scripted runs is okay. But yeah, see Aaron Rodgers 3rd TD last night, all receivers covered, all green on the left side and he just runs it in. Straight line too. Ryan can do that. He's a straightline runner but I think his SIM card runs a little slower than Rodgers (hell almost everyone's does Rodgers is GOAT) so I don't ever expect that level of awareness.
Mickey Mouse organization. You'd expect a coordinator requiring his offense to throw 60 times to at least include the quarterback more often in game-planning. Isn't this something Sean Payton was adamant about always including Brees in?
With a years worth of tape defenses caught on to his system and Lazor couldn't counter. Campbell aluded to the fact Lazor tried to change things up but nothing worked and hence he's gone. Not to mention untimely meltdowns and penalties not helping.
Apparently Miami had come up with a balanced gameplan for the Jets. They had pass plays on one card and run plays on another (which Lazor left in his hotel room). That is why they passed so much. The only run plays were the plays that Tannehill wrote down on a scrap paper he luckily left in his fanny pack for the game. Those plays were the run plays Tannehill was allowed to audible to if needed. This week, for Tannehill's contribution to the offense scheme- look for 23 packages (2 RB's 3 TE's) in tight formation.
I don't understand why some people don't understand that other teams adapt. I just don't think its all that hard for NFL level DCs to be able to gameplan for a team that doesn't audible. After awhile, they'll recognize the looks they're seeing and gameplan accordingly, knowing full well, once our offense is set they are running that play.
If Philbin was such a big problem AND Lazor was such a big problem AND Wallace was such a big problem AND Dallas Thomas was such a big problem AND its unfair to compare Tannehill to elite QBs then how in the holy hell did we end up with the 8th most efficient offense according to Football Outsiders in 2014? I mean, we were the only team without an elite QB ranked that high. Something must have been right?
