What I meant was, is their statistic a thing? Do people look at plus-minus in road wins and home losses as some sort of determinant of team rating? Is it a thing or are they just trying to make it a thing?

Curious to see if Wall can continue this in the second half with his health being what it is. That's where you're likely to see it, after he's had some time to cool down.

Spo was a complete nightmare in this game.

Completely overreacted to Jared Freaking Dudley.

Let him shoot 3s. He ain't Stephen Curry! Whiteside will make way more dunks than he makes 3s.

Embarrassing tonight. Every minute Josh Richardson played was atrocious. Winslow was awful as well

Sitting Whiteside was in mistake in retrospect but in the moment, too. Can't let the opposition dictate the game to you like that, especially given the fact that, like you said, it's not like they're all that talented.

Ugh. A short-handed team on the 2nd night of a road back-to-back. Terrible effort on defense.

Nah. Good coaching. Whiteside is worthless and a huge detriment on Defense if he is gonna be guarding a guy on the perimeter.

Washington dictating to the Heat? Yeah..they dictated to the Heat and demanded that they play their best lineups that provide ultimate spacing for Dragic and Wade who killed them all night.

Remember guys, the Heat's answer to teams playing small ball is to play their GREAT small ball lineups.

Anyway...a TERRIBLE series of calls and one ultimately horrific one cost the Heat the game anyway. Let;'s not pretend that didn't happen. Bosh got thrown out over it and Spo got caught on audio telling a Ref that "You just cost us the game".

But yeah...leaving Whiteside in....vs. 4 guards and a small forward is dumb coaching. Whiteside is a terrible P&R defender and even worse 20 feet from the basket.

Second level thinking: yeah...7-7 for Whiteside is the retort. Yeah, and the Wiz pushed the pace and got the Heat in the penalty while pushing the pace into a high possession game.

In case you haven;t noticed...heat is damn near unbeatable playing low possession games. In a way..the Wiz suckered the Heat into shooting over 60% and thinking their offense was coming to them easily (which it was).

The Heat is a defensive team.

    Simple hard facts:

Heat have played 517 Minutes with Hassan on the court: Opp. EFG% .465, 103.1 Off. rating.

Heat have played 347 Minutes WITHOUT Hassan on the court: Opp. EFG% .421, 92.6 Off. rating.

The Heat is BETTER without him defensively. PERIOD.

It's not that I don' believe the numbers, I just can't bring myself to believe the heat are better without the leading shot blocker in the nba who is a monster at cleaning up mizses. It's like we have 2 different teams, 1 one whiteside is in the other when he is out. I thought he played really well tonight too.

Even more astounding is we shot 59% and lost. Don't want to blame officiating but the alley oop by Hollins and blatant travel at the end changed the game. May have ended differently otherwise. You don't see Bosh get fired up like that about officiating ever either.

I'm not going to claim to be a basketball expert and I understand the basic assumption that led to Whiteside being held out but it seemed like we played right into Washington's hands.

Instead of playing our 5 best versus something decidedly less than their 5 best we went long stretches playing two rookies who aren't offensive threats and didn't play all that well defensively either.

The ultimate point is that we did what Washington dictated and it didn't help us.

Why not go to a 3-2 zone for a few possessions and see if they adjust? Why not let Whiteside get hacked? At worst you're in the bonus early. Without Deng these small lineups aren't as good. And we don't have the 3 point shooting to keep up anyway.

And the larger point, what is our identity going further? If Whiteside is going to be benched against Jared Dudley, forgetting Draymond Green then why resign him? And a larger point, if we want to play small, why did we sign and develop him in the first place? It took effort.

There is still room for bigs. We beat the Pacers in a game because Vogel took out Hibbert and gave LBJ a free run to the basket. The biggest shot in Heat history was precipitated by Pop taking out Duncan and leaving Bosh as the biggest guy on the court.

Let's figure this out. Hassan is absolutely one of our 5 best guys. I want to win or lose with our best

Your argument for why Whiteside should have been in are examples of "bad coaching" by Greg Popovich and Frank Vogel. Easily two of the 6 best coaches in the NBA.

Think about that for a second.

You are also talking about not "doing what Washington Dictates us to do", yet you want the #2 ranked Defensive team to scrap their system and play a 3-2 Zone which they haven't played in forever.

    THAT is what Washington wanted.

I had and have zero problem with what Spo did.

Our #2 ranked defense was getting shredded.

So yeah, in the midst of the shredding I don't think it's ridiculous to try something else for a short stretch to see if it works.

Looking back at the game log it looks like Whiteside left for good with an 8 point lead with under 2 minutes left in the 3rd. We then immediately gave most of the lead back and then played behind most of the 4th.

Maybe if Deng was playing it would've been different since he provides some shooting and more defense than McBob but who knows

Very interesting discussion. At its base, I just don't like the fact that a team can get Whiteside, one of our high-impact guys, off the floor by inserting Jared Dudley. Taking a guy who dominates certain areas of the game off the floor in that manner just doesn't feel right. But I see what Sect is saying about switching to zone etc. Fascinating little chess matches.

I do think Deng will be a big boost; they're putting a lot, maybe too much, on rookies. Hopefull his hamstring is better for Friday...though Charlotte is playing great lately too.

I think the reason this is getting so much play and why a lot of people, myself included, are distressed is that we weren't playing Golden State with 5 unique stars. We were playing a diminished Wizards team.

Lots of teams have a Jared Dudley type. Other teams will try this and we need to figure it out

Our defense was being shredded by a ton of mid range garbage shots. If the Wiz want to sign up for that right now, next time we play them, I'll take it.

I cannot imagine Whiteside saying "Yeah, I'll chill while you go get KD." IMO, he will sign the first max contract placed in front of him, regardless of the team offering.

Oh no...he is a great rim protector and a very good big man. Worth a max contract.

But he is like having the very best Strong Safety in the NFL. Wait a minute....

Well..you can scheme against him is what I am saying. Once again, the great thing is that the Heat is well adept to counter those that scheme to limit his effectiveness.

    Looking forward...

Teams in the EC that are capable of handing HW a seat on the bench, down the stretch?

Washington ain't it. They have to play Nene and Gortat, and if they play one of them down the stretch (they will)...Heat play HW.

    Boston? Yes.

Atlanta? No. Horford and Millsap are their best players.

Charlotte? No. Jefferson is their best player.

Cleveland? No. They play a inside out, and Tristan always finds his way into closing lineups and he is a rim roamer .

Chicago? No. Noah, Gibson, and a double post offense.

Indiana? Yes. They are a committed Spacing team. Friday is gonna be a nice test in a place where we never win.

Toronto? No. We own them for whatever reason.

I don't care about the rest.

Yeah and Al Jefferson is out tonight, I believe. Makes things a little interesting if they play Kaminsky at the 5, Batum at 4. I kinda wanted Hassan to get another crack at Big Al after last game when Al got him pretty good a few times.

Charlotte's been weirdly good lately: won 7 of their last 9, losses to GSW and CLE, wins over WAS, CHI, MIL, DET. Not bad.

They are shooting well below what they "need" to shoot...BUT..they are 9th in 3pt. FG% differential. SO they decided to combat their deficiency with Defense.

On Makes it is - 1.2 threes per game. So they are losing by about 3.2 points per game at the three point line.

Their Math is currently "working out". if they increase their 3 pt. shooting to a more exceptable level, their Math would make them look like geniuses.

I'm not sure their defensive success against 3 point shooting can be sustained. But their lack of offensive success on 3 point shooting is unsurprising given the personnel. So that differential could get worse instead of better.

    The opposite is true.

The Heat's personnel dictates a 3 pt. FG% team average of around league average of .345 to .350. They are at .313 right now. Bosh, Green, TJ, Dragic, McBob, etc..are all Average or above average 3 pt. shooters historically.

3 pt. defense can be sustained since the difference between the very best and very worst 3 pt. defenses is within a .020 point area.

It is much more likely, that their 3 pt. shooting improves than their defense against 3 pt. shooting falters. One has historical precedent, the other is a matter of a overall Defensive improvement.
