The Dolphins are 8-0 since 2014 when Jarvis has 5 targets or fewer and 5-17 when he has more than 5. Why do they keep thinking he should be the focal point of the offense? Discuss.
I think it's because of his work ethic, personality, reliability... But it's a mistake to run that many offensive opportunities through a guy ranked 103rd in Yards Per Catch. You are ensuring the offense is not explosive. People mistake his EFFORT level after a catch for explosive. He is high effort, but that's not the same as explosive.
A good comparison is Danny Amendola, who, like Jarvis Landry, has 10 yards per catch this season. The Pat's Amendola has 4.5 catches per game on 5.92 targets per game. Pretty efficient and not that high usage. Landry has 6.92 catches per game on 10.2 targets per game. Far less efficient. And too many targets for a player like Jarvis, imo.
Stats like, "This person touches the ball we are blank-blank" are so terrible. Of course when Lamar rushes a certain amount of time we win. Because you run the ball when you're ahead and you run the clock out. Of course when Jarvis is targeted a lot we lose. Because that means we are throwing the ball a whole lot more then we should. He is by far our best route runner. Has the surest hands. I'm not sure at this point we have another WR other then Jarvis and Jennings that can crisp routes, and Jennings can't catch the ball and his burst is gone. Jarvis haters are out in droves. Guys about to catch 100 balls and go for 1000 yards. People are such joke with hatred toward WRs.
Well it's clear this is a correlation doesn't equal causation kind of thing.. otherwise we have a formula for winning every game: don't throw Landry the ball haha! He gets targeted more often in losses because something else isn't working, and I'm guessing that's the running game (we tend to win when Miller gets more touches too). Since Landry is one of the best 2 WR's on the field, it means he'll get targeted more when we can't run effectively. Probably something as simple as that.
Where's the hate in this thread? Whether or not Jarvis Landry should be the focal point of the offense is a completely debateable topic. IMO, he's force fed the ball too much. I've seen too many ineffective plays designed directly for him resulting in bad down and distance situations. I'm not even blaming Landry as much as I'm blaming the coaches for focusing on getting him the ball too much.
Having a low YPA quarterback give heavy targets to an athletically-limited low ypc slot man is having predictable results. Our offense doesn't get yards in chunks with any consistency. Been saying this for a while now. The offense must get less Landry-centric. His touches just don't impact the game all that much.
Very rarely do coaches call plays that have to go to a specific target. Screens...thats about it. Sure there is a main target, but if its not there, you guy elsewhere. So if Jarvis is open and hes the go to route, you throw it to him. That doesn't hurt the team. Now a QB throwing to his go to route even when hes not open, will hurt the team.
That's bad statistics right there. It could just as easily be that we are more likely to lose games where either: 1. Tannehill inordinately targets Landry and avoids his other options. 2. The other players aren't pulling their weight and Landry is the only guy consistently open. I'm sure some of this season is due to the injury to Matthews as well. Offenses win when they have options.
To be fair, his yards per catch are generally low because we run an inordinate amount of screen plays to him because our offensive line is terrible. Yes he is an effort guy, but if you have that effort and some damn good talent that is something to build off. Now if his YPC is still bad when our offensive line can block for more than 0.5 seconds on any given play (slight exaggeration) I will fully agree with that stat.
I'm oversimplifying this but at the end of the day his production is Davone Bess on steroids. Bess had a higher ypc Tanny's rookie year
I made the same argument with friends. He's Bess with a fiery personality. Fool's gold that limits our offensive options as our #1 with slot receiver abilities.
i like landry but we throw him the ball way too much. it boggles the mind why we dont run the ball. starting to think they dont like miller
Jarvis Landry is a great example of what irks me about Miami and to some extent it’s fan-base. I know a lot of you guys are thinking the same thing too, so I’ll just say it. Everyone here (including me) appreciates Jarvis Landry…and Mike Pouncey…and Reshad Jones…but they aren’t hall of fame players and they shouldn’t be held up as highly as they sometimes are. It’s irritating to a lot of people when these guys are worshipped just for showing up, putting in the work and looking like they can half-way play. Every one of those players is enough to be an asset at their position because they have something they do well, but they aren’t complete players in the sense they are an advantage week-in, week-out against any type of front, alignment, coverage, defender, etc. You put Jones around the line of scrimmage and his instincts and tackling ability stand out. He looks like a Pro Bowler it that capacity. You back him up into coverage (especially against a good TE) and he’ll let you down. You have Pouncey pulling and blocking downfield and his athleticism stands out. You have him blocking the games beefier DTs head on and he’s pretty unremarkable. You connect with Landry on the intermediate routes and his hands and run-after-catch instincts offer an advantage. You play him outside and build an offense that asks him to generate yards based on his effort alone and it will routinely degenerate. I’m not saying any of those guys aren’t good players or that I wish them to be replaced, but the standards are too low when they’re held they way they are in the eyes of fans. The truth is, Pouncey is overpaid for what he contributes and if Landry were a free agent today I’m 100% sure this front office would be willing to commit major money to him as well which would be a mistake. I always go back to Belichick’s management of the Patriots roster. The NFL is about winning. Nothing really matters if you can win. It might sound simplistic but these players aren’t my personal friends. I don’t care how the Dolphins do it. I just want to see them win. But a total commitment to winning means that every player is expendable and that every player has a value. The truth is that a good coaching staff ought to be able to take virtually any solid SS prospect and make him an adequate replacement for Reshad Jones. Any slot receiver worth his salt (with the confidence to do it) ought to be able to match Landry’s production in an offense that gives him this many chances to touch the ball. Maybe you don’t quite get the instincts of a Reshad Jones or the tenacity of a Jarvis Landry just by showing up but good coaching and a solid physical prospect can get you 90% of what those guys are which is more than enough to win a Super Bowl if the rest of the roster is good too. I don’t dislike Landry or Pouncey or Jones…I just recognize them for what they are: guys who were self-motivated enough to buy in and develop themselves despite the lackluster coaching around them. Don’t get me wrong, I love it when a Jarvis Landry or a Mike Pouncey or a Reshad Jones shows up and commits 100% without any push by the coaches, but the reason you have coaches is to get the other 50 guys on your roster to do the same thing. I’ll promise you this much…you get the right coaching staff in Miami and that kind of production will start to look pretty easy to replicate. Miami shouldn’t be in a position where it feels it needs to pay big money to get the reliability of Jarvis Landry or Mike Pouncey. That should be easy to put on the field. It’s bad drafting and bad coaching that has led us to think otherwise. This is why when someone raves about the “amazing effort” of Jarvis Landry or what a travesty it is that Reshad Jones isn’t in the Pro Bowl a lot of us quietly agree but simultaneously roll our eyes thinking it’s kind of sad that effort and solid tackling stands out that much in South Florida these days.
Context is key in regards to almost everything and most certainly stats. By cherry picking stats I can make nearly any player look like they're HoF caliber or I can take that same player and make them look like garbage. Landry is the best WR on this team and it's not even close. The best part is, he's very young and should only get better.
yup. this stat is as useful as we are 5-0 when lamar miller has 13 carries or more. he had 12 carries vs the cowboys, so if we got 1 more carry that would have changed the whole game outcome? nope it wouldnt. what that stat shows is we need to run the ball more. what this stat shows is we depend on laundry to much. however, if we drastically reduce the number to 5 then we aren't using him enough. but if we only look to him 5 times, that means other positions are finally pulling their weight.
Who is to say that 5 isn't using him enough? Considering their record when they don't force him the ball, it seems like 5 is plenty enough. Go through any other teams #1 receiver and you might see when they don't get the ball as much, the team doesn't do as well. When Landry gets the ball a lot, the team is awful.
He may be the best receiver on this team, but he is not a good receiver vs.players in the NFL. Considering all the negatives he brings, I think he probably wouldn't make the roster of several teams in the NFL.
What is Landry's yard per route run and yard per target? Be interesting to see how it compares to the rest of the league.
By contrast, the Giants are 4-8 when the other LSU hothead plays and has 9 targets or less and 6-8 when he has 10 or more. If you want to use 5 again, they are 1-1. If you are good, the more touches you have the better chance you give your team of winning.
what if the secret number is 7? what if it's 6? this stat doesn't show anything. do we target, run laundry too much? yeah probably. but when no one else can catch, or get open. what are you supposed to do?
It has nothing to do with Landry's abilities and everything to do with over-usage. It's not hard for a DC to game plan for one guy. Especially when that guy is more like a Reggie Bush type in play style. I completely disagree with people who say he's not explosive or athletic. We need more play makers because when the other guys get opportunities they squander them most of the time. Thus, we overuse the guy who we consider the most reliable (I don't know what that guy isn't Lamar Miller, ask the coaches) Our offense is sickeningly transparent. We suck on both sides of the ball. But Landry is one of the last players I'd pin this season on.
In retrospect, should've gotten Bess back from the Browns instead of Cameron. Just convert an extra O-lineman to play TE. Let Tanny place him wherever for extra protection. Bess and Landry are better suited for Lazor's system, unlike Philbin's Green Bay clones. Capt. Hindsight to the rescue... I don't understand why this already isn't a staple for offenses with crappy o-lines.
#2 in the NFL in APY, Antonio Brown had a monster yr in pittsburgh edging him out on the final weekend.
I don't think that you can look at ANY WRs stats and say that throwing them more or fewer passes results in more wins or losses. As others have said, we throw more when we're beind, and less when we're ahead. Tannehill is also more comfortable with Landry than the others. Going into 2016, I think that Parker has shown enough that he'll be a much larger part of the picture next September, and I hope that their targets are about even.
