It’s not your imagination; Miami Dolphins’ pass defense is historically bad

The LACK of attempts and commitment to the run game is the culprit, when actually used our running offense is much...MUCH better than the passing offense.

You can't go off of actual numbers it's the percentage compared to passing. I don't need to go back to 2012 but I didn't want to use Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers. The Raiders this year with just slightly more running percentage wise at 60/40 have a much better balanced TOP 29:51/30:41.

When making the singular argument that the only way to improve TOP is by running more, implies the passing game is at max efficiency.

    No it doesn't.

I also never said it was the only way to improve ToP.

I'm not sure why so many of you Tannehaters aren't grasping this painfully simple concept.

Our ToP sucks solely because of the running game being criminally underutilized. The operative word is "sucks". You can improve ToP and the number you improved it to, can still suck. If you want to get the ToP number out of the realm of suck, run the damn ball more. Not only will it drastically improve the ToP as Miller averages around 5 ypc, but it will also improve the 3rd % of the passing game. This is not ****ing rocket science. this is not ****ing crazy. This is not ****ing new.

The only thing that is ridiculous is the depth that you Tannehaters are willing to go to make him the problem of everything on the team......INCLUDING THE DEFENSE!!!!!!

If Tannehill completed two more 3rd down passes per game this year and the drives were extended a paltry two minutes a piece because of it, we would rank 12th in the league for ToP, tied with Buffalo. It matters.

    https://www.teamrankings.com/nfl/stat/average-time-of-possession-net-of-ot

It doesn't change that running the ball sufficiently and effectively is a huge issue in ToP, that's self evident, but making those 3rd down throws extends drives, should lead to more rushing attempts and keeps a vulnerable defense off the field. It would be a big help to Tannehill if our OL was healthy and competent, without Dallas Thomas playing RT, or LG for that matter.

There's nothing wrong with that other than:

improve the 3rd % of the passing game.

    which should be:

improve the 3rd down efficiency of the passing game.

Other than that, what do you think is the problem?

Yeah, just two 3rd and 8+ third downs, with no receivers past the sticks. That's my issue with this stuff. How many manageable third down are we actually in?

That's a good question and I don't know the answer. How many 3rd and 8's were failure, 3rd and 5's, 3rd and 2's, who knows. But the run/pass/pass and out drive fails were rampant, like clockwork. We had how many 3rd down conversions last week, two? And we're averaging four per game? And several games have been pretty much over by the third quarter and we can't even pad the stats with garbage time third down conversions? Pathetic.

Our defense would suck with or without a poor time of possession figure, this whole issue is just something that adds to the suckiness. In other words our defense doesn't suck just because of our offensive ineptitude. We're also second from the bottom in total first downs per game, so it isn't just a third down failure rate issue:

    https://www.teamrankings.com/nfl/stat/first-downs-per-game

Miami's defense is bad because it is bad, no other reason- the lousy offensive time of possession is just one small aspect of the whole problem, not a scapegoat. I'd rather focus on getting more quality Linebackers and DBs than this ToP issue, nothing more that a tangent.

Yeah, I agree, and I wish I knew more specifics about our third down stuff. I do think a huge problem is our offensive scheme, I mean, we keep seeing breakdowns of film, and we see one, or none, receivers past the sticks, and multiple receivers bunched up in the same part of the field. We don't seem to use Cameron on streaks up the slot, which baffles me.

There's 2 significant problems that all of our offensive woes come from:

    - Bad oline
    - Bad OC

Our line sucks at pass blocking. Our OCs abandon the running game. So opposing defenses can tee off on our line because they know we're passing. This terrible oline is even more vulnerable because opposing defenses don't even have to guess what we're gonna do (which was exacerbated further by not being able to audible).

So, the only thing our bad OCs thought to do to cover our bad oline and their own predilection to abandon the run, was to call pass plays with short (and thereby quick) routes all bunched to one side so Thill doesn't have to scan the field. This was done not because Thill sucks, but because he has no time because the line can't stop a defense that doesn't even need to think, just rush.

Thill gets the ball to his receivers who either drop it or are stuffed in their attempts to get to the sticks. That is why our 3rd efficiency is ****. That is why our terrible defense is on the field too long.

Blaming Thill for our offensive woes until we fix our line and run the damn ball is blaming the stuffy nose instead of blaming the cold.

    Which every QB does.

You know that's why no QB has a perfect record with perfect completion percentages who score on every series.

We are talking about the overwhelming problems, not the Tannehater version of what our problems are.

Agree. But franchise QBs over come more hurdles then average QBs.

Take a look at Rivers and what he's over coming. Bottom 5 in rushing yards. Top 5 in TOP. Awful OL. Bad running game.

We are just spinning in circles. We all agree things have been stacked against Tannehill. Just a lot, Tannehill doesn't share any of the blame for anything it seems on your side of the argument.

What Tannehill endures is worse than what Rivers' does. He's got a worse oline, abandoned running game, horrible OCs, and isn't allowed to audible.

He could be better at quite a bit, but he's nowhere near as bad as you guys pretend.

I don't think he's an awful QB. I think he's below average that would need a lot of help to win with. But could be a serviceable QB.

    I don't think he's a SB winning QB though.

You don't think Tannehill is the answer: People assume you think he's Arne absolute worst.

Defense isn't interested in tackling, rushing or covering anyone.

Still the offense has only put up 6 in the half.

No I think he's the answer. I don't think he's perfect and have said so on numerous occasions. Of course that's what people think, its one of the reasons why I'm annoyed all the time.

I don't like bad arguments or a wrong diagnosis. Much of the crap shoveled on Thill in here is one or both of those. I have always maintained:

    - He's fine at the deep ball, Wallace was the problem (as were the oline and play designs)
    - His biggest problems he can control are leadership and staying in the pocket too much. He needs to tell his OC to eff off and do what needs to be done. And he can improve touch.
    - His biggest problems he can't control are the oline (because they cannot pass block), OCs (because they abandon the run and call stupid effing plays and won't let him audible.)
    - For the first 2 years another problem outside of his control were terrible receivers (Hartline, Legedu) or WRs who were the wrong fit for the type of offense we ran(Wallace).

I truly feel like if people honestly evaluated what Thill has done with the colossal **** sandwich he's been served they'd feel a whole lot better about him.

That stuff ^ has ALWAYS been my argument, why its misrepresented is not a question I can answer.

Yeah, so glad they got rid of Vontae Davis....

Why argue about who is worse between the defense, oline, tannehill, coaching...they're all bad or mediocre. The team is bad across the board. Offense can't score. Defense gets gashed by everyone.

No, it isn't, I wouldn't argue that, but for some of us we've seen enough to know he isn't doing enough, could he in the future, possibly, but you just don't pay someone 20 mil per while you're waiting to see IF he is the guy.

20 million is not a lot for a QB in this day and age. He's shown enough to say with an average line he can be Top 10. I thinkt he problem is that people think $20 mil is for Rodgers level QBs and its not.

Here is an interesting little tidbit. Lamar Miller has run the ball a whopping 13 times on 3rd down this year. That's less than once a game. Of those 13 rushes 9 were when it was it was less than 2 yards to go and 2 were when it was more than 11 yards. So basically the coaching staff refuses to run the ball on 3rd down unless its ultra-short yardage or its so long that they are going to play it safe and punt.

I think we can all agree that passing efficiency and by extension third down conversion rates, ToP etc.. are going to suffer when its obvious how one dimensional the offense is even on 3rd and 3 or 4.

Yup. Shotgun, 5-wide on 3rd and 2 on one play vs Indy I think. We've gotta get a system in place where we can move the ball in more than one specific way.
