Drafted a lineman. Went after La'el. Kicked the tires on Mathis.

Like I said they didn't ignore it. Just dealt with it poorly.

Plus we were told on this very forum if guards are your biggest problem it's a good position to be in.

Opinions of Tannehill aside, here is what I will say:

I think it is absolutely disgraceful, deplorable, and moronic that this team would invest so much in a quarterback and then do such an incompetent job of trying to develop him. In 2012 we were cycling in receivers off of the waiver wire on a weekly basis to start opposite Brian Hartline, who almost died in training camp. Then we've consistently had one of the worst offensive lines -- by anyone's measurement -- for the past three years. Who are the coaches we've put in charge of his development? Oh.

It goes without saying that the most important decision that Steve Ross is going to screw up in 2016 is the hiring of a new head football coach. I can't wait to see what kind of schlep he brings in to screw up the development of our NEXT quarterback.

Yes I do. I don't think Ross was ever happy with the Hickey hire. He didn't deserve the job in the first place.

I didn't think we even offered Mathis a contract.

Does it matter? We weren't contenders.

“The No. 1 priority in finding a new place to play was playing for a contender,” Mathis said. “The Broncos weren’t in the mix early on. They were kind of the darkhorse in the race. They emerged here late and I just couldn’t turn down that opportunity.”

Actually, yes, in the context of what you're arguing with me about, it does matter. The Dolphins didn't even attempt to sign him.

That's my whole point. Whether he would have accepted a contact from us is completely different.

They had internal conversations about him. They knew his asking price and it was out of their ballpark.

But again, it's pointless because he didn't want to play for this sorry *** franchise. But please .... do go on about throwing another big contract out there. I mean the last two have been worth the money **eye roll**.

And the Mathis camp and Dolphins are far apart on the money issue while neither side feels any significant desperation or feels close to any looming deadline to do a deal.

When the Dolphins initially called Mathis (actually his agent Drew Rosenhaus) sources tell me the two spoke of parameters of where they would like to be in getting a deal signed.

The Dolphins were willing to do a deal similar to what they did a year ago with guard Daryn Colledge and center Samson Satele. In other words, the Dolphins are willing to pay an older stopgap player around $2-$3 million per season in a deal that doesn't tie them up for a second season although it might be a two-year deal.

Mathis, who was scheduled to earn $5.5 million from the Eagles in 2015, wants a deal that at least makes him back that money he was expecting. He wants to feel whole again."

Not wanting to pay the man money is I guess better than not improving your oline, flushing your season, and making your highly paid QB play hurt all year.

It's funny, people came out in droves defending Luck for being hurt, but no one wants to talk about Tannehill playing hurt. The narrative is just that he sucks, and this season proves it.

IMO, their real neglect this off-season was with the LBs. Regarding the OL, Albert is gimpy, but when healthy, he's solid and there was no great option available out there. Our Pro-Bowl center is out for the season. Our first round pick RT is out for the year. Wtf do we all expect? I always mention that SO much come down to chance, luck and circumstance. We've been on the short end of the s--t stick for awhile now. Sucks, but it is what it is.

Getting shot in the head might be worse that getting shot in the gut, but they both suck pretty bad. Lousy Guard play has had a big effect on both the run and pass games, it's been a big problem no matter how you grade or rate it.

Lousy guard play has been a problem, no one is saying it wasn't. The bigger problem is that our tackles have been hurt on top of lousy guard play and our backups suck horribly bad.

If we had solid to great tackles that played all year, guards would be our biggest problem and that puts us in pretty good shape.

No, then you'd have two good Tackles, a Pro Bowl Center and two lousy Guards. And the lousy Guards would still be a big problem.

No, they are a problem but a problem we can deal with.

There needs to be a real effort by this board to move away from extremes and understand the gray in between.

For example, the guards can be a problem but that doesn't mean they are a season destruction problem. Hearing a lot of you talk its as if players are either great or so bad they destroy franchises.

All you need at guard is average level play. If you have solid to above average play at the tackles and center, then you can get away with crap guard play. Its not ideal, but it can be done and you're better off putting resources at more impactful positions. If those positions are fine, then yes, fix guard.

Our problem is that we virtually never had our starting line play and our backups are terrible.

Understand the gray in between? You mean the middle ground, the non absolute, the compromise? Something a little more flexible? How's this gem of flexibility from you in post #94:

"If guards are your biggest problem you are in good shape."

Or this gem from the current post: "All you need at guard is average level play."

You're spouting off maxims like you were Chairman Mao in his little red book while our OL has been shot off at the knees the last couple of years by lousy Guard play. And by injuries. And by lack of depth at Tackle. And by lack of depth at Center. They're all big problems. When the Guards suck, we're not ok. If Tannenbaum, et al didn't learn that this year, then we're in trouble.

The irony is that the Dolphins are probably the template in showing how bad Guard play can f*** up a team. Plenty of other problems to go around, but we tried to sweep the Guard problem under the rug this year, and the rug monster bit us in the ***. For that brief window earlier in the year when Albert was getting it back in gear, Pouncey was ok and James was healthy, the OL still struggled with sh***y Guard play. Jamil Douglas sucked hard, Billy Turner is not very good, and Dallas Thomas sucks so hard and so often he should have a porn contract by now. The crappy Guard play is a big problem that wasn't fixed, and now it's biting us in the a**.

Says the person that has for the past few days, literally redefined words and concepts just to get on my damn nerves in a stupid attempt to fabricate forum gotcha moments.

I can't even make a point with you, because every time I do, you just invent your own language and hold me to your new definitions. Its bizarre.

I mean for the love of god, you act as if every spot on the oline has to be all world talent and that guards are as important as QBs, but in your bizarre made up language I'm the one that has a problem with not seeing the gray area?

Maybe part of your problem and frustration is that you try to read too much into what people write, bending it too much to fit want you want or expect to hear, rather that just read the words. It's really not for you to make extrapolations and tell posters what they're really saying- they're saying what they're saying regardless of your interjections of subjective interpretations. Case in point, we don't have to go back any further than your last post:

"I mean for the love of god, you act as if every spot on the oline has to be all world talent and that guards are as important as QBs"

No, I'm not. That's just how you see the world, for whatever reason. Have a nice day.

I didn't say you said that. i said you act as if. You are inventing new meanings to words, phrases and concepts, then expecting me to follow that.

This is the second time today one of Tannehaters has done this exact thing.

Its either an unfortunate epidemic or its indicative of the type of brain it takes to be a Tannehater.

"You're acting as if" is pretty much the same as "you're saying". You're playing word games here, semantics. I'm not acting as if Guards were as important as Quarterbacks, what is your basis for saying that? What gives you the right to say that? Do you not understand that by saying that you incite other posters and encourage them into retaliation? Sometimes you hate this site? It's your own damn fault.

Yeah I got some, multiple degrees worth. You cavalierly inform people that they're "acting as if", which is not your place given their words on the subject are right before your eyes, ie source material, which ultimately results in you curling up into a ball of "boo hoo, I hate this site" mentality. Good job, and well deserved.

    I doubt that.

I suppose if I a person said they loved X all the time, but everything they say is negative about everything about X, it would wrong if someone said that person acts as if they don't actually like the Dolphins, in your made up world with made up definitions?

This is just like the other day. You live in extremes and define those extremes with your own personal dictionary.

If said I had degrees in cooking and made the worst food you ever had, you'd question if I was being honest about those degrees. Same thing here.

But back to the point, you are ACTING as if the guards are as important as the tackles. Sure, you "said" one was like being shot in the gut while the other is like being shot in the head (which isn't a big difference), but then you go on to ACT as if, having bad guards with good tackles and a center is a major problem that would keep a team from winning. That is you living in extremes. Me saying if you're only problem is guards you're doing good, is not an extreme.

    Again, English, not Jimglish

Yeah, right. Am I also "acting as if" Guards are more important as Quarterbacks, as you had the gall to (wrongly and comically ) say? These are the problems that you run into when you start playing judge and jury as to the intent of words. Your terminal cry in the woods is "I didn't say that you said that, I said that you sounded like this or that you meant that."

Which is all bs. That way you're boiling it down to your own biased, self appointed interpretations of what others said. And those interpretations are worthless.
