haha - no salt needed - 3 for 37 is just ridiculous for him - but i wasnt that far off either - 12 a season and he needs to hit some incentives to get it all. I suppose he knows he's not that good of a player, so betting on himself to take the 15.8 and earn a long term contract after next year was probably never going to happen. Baseball is so flush with money - and for mediocre players too!

Never doubt that there is a team out there that will make a boneheaded signing.

I think the package it took to get Chapman tells you everything you need to know about how he's viewed around the sport right now. If I was a GM I wouldn't have touched a player with his pending issues going on. The Yankees deserve all the headaches he brings. Don't get me wrong he's a great talent but is a complete waste of a human being.

BRING THE GUNS OUT!! In all seriousness I don't know how I feel, he isn't a great human being all at. On the other side he brings it and they gave up nothing, to the point I hope Cashman kicked in a few VIP passes to Scores or some old dirt from the old Stadium as well....

I mean for a year they have obviously a strong back-end of the bullpen, but if NY isn't good which I don't think they will be at least at the deadline they have a few very good assets to deal away, or they could keep him and try to work out a decent extension, or finally qualify him and get pick. To be honest, if they dealt Miller and kept Dellin and AC depending on his court stuff, they are better than with Miller IMO.

Also I am seeing it thrown around maybe dealing Gardy and that makes room for Cespedas but I dont like it because it is a Boras client, however the market has cooled on considerably...

The cost was so far in Yanks favor that you could not pass up the acquisition, regardless of off field items, and frankly, even that could work to Cashman and Yanks favor. Even 1/2 a season this year is worth the acquistion:
    and s
trictly looking at Chapman’s on-field resumé, the results are astounding. In 2015, he worked to a 1.63 ERA with 15.7 K/9, 4.5 BB/9 and a 37.1 percent ground-ball rate. Over the past four seasons in Cincinnati, the Cuban-born phenom has delivered an exceptional 1.90 ERA while averaging 16.1 strikeouts and 3.8 walks per nine innings to go along with an average of 36 saves per season.

MLB.com’s Andrew Simon points out (on Twitter), the Yankees now possess the pitchers with the three highest strikeout percentages in all of baseball from 2014-15 in Chapman (46.3 percent), Miller (41.6 percent) and Betances (39.5 percent). 2 of the 3 Lefty's...no way you pass when that falls in your lap.

The issue I have with it is what message is it saying to the team, the league, and the fans. How can any team actually want to use someone like him to market and try to get people into the ball park, especially female fans. I'm sorry but you need to have some morals when it comes to running a team. I get that not every player is going to be a saint or boy scout but when it comes to violence or sexual assault that would be an automatic no thanks for me. The Yankees can say they did their background work on him all the want but the fact remains he fired 8 shots into a wall of his garage because of a fight with his girlfriend, who knows what else he's done or what else he could do (and this isn't the first time Chapman has had domestic issues). I don't know I would have an extremely hard time rooting for the guy.

Just can't see how anyone can justify how this was a good move by the Yankees. Especially since the franchise has always prided itself on being so classy and has such a rich history etc.

I am completely torn here - domestic violence and shooting a gun in anger inside your home in a neighborhood where a stray bullet could have hit anyone or anything. I like chapman the player, this makes most games a 6 inning game for the yankees. Before the domestic issues he wasnt a headache. I really hate saying this, as a woman, but we have no idea what led him to the domestic violence (was he defending himself? is she embelishing?) we have no idea if he choked her, (she had no marks and was quite calm when the police arrived and he says he poked her on the shoulder and she fell down) There are always 3 sides to a story, his, her's and the truth. I'm not going to be the judge or jury on this, im sure most of the story will come out in time, but i have to think where there is smoke, there is fire. Now the Yankee's roster includes an alleged wife beater, an alcoholic, an alleged shooter outside a club in the DR, a Knight and a 40 yr old steriod abuser - THE EVIL EMPIRE RISES, AGAIN!

In all seriousness if he gets suspended for the domestic violence, that he was not arrested or charged for, then MLB is a kind of being a hypocrite. But, apparently he wouldnt accrue service time, so he'd be property of the yankees through 2017. If he's exonerated and he's not suspended, i can see the Yankees flipping him at the trade deadline or trying to sign him longterm and flipping Miller.

I dont like that we gave away Eric Jagielo (.284/.347/.495 slash line before his injury in july. He had 248 AB's with 9 HR's, 35 rbis and 36 runs) - our infield depth in the minor leagues is horrid and he was really the only one close. I assume Starlin would shift over to 3rd if something happened to Headley and Refs would come up. There's always Cole Figueroa and Dante Bichette, Jr.....

Rookie Davis is a HARD throwing right hander, but he isnt projected as a top of the rotation guy. He's young though, so who knows.

Caleb Cotham isnt just a throw in, he actually was on the scranton shuttle last year. He's middle relief and someone who could help the bullpen this yr.

and finally Tony Renda, a cal alum, who's been part of 3 trades i believe. He was traded to the yanks for David Carpenter, couldnt ever see this guy in a yankee uniform so no loss there.

Havent seen where he's been accused or charged of DV before - he's been arrested for speeding and driving with a suspended license and sued by some guy in cuba accusing him of having him falsely imprisoned after Champman alleged the man was part of a human trafficking ring.

this is not domestic violence either - He's just dumb, thinks with the wrong head and cant apparently keep his cuban anthems to a proper decibel level.

Honestly, at this stage that seems to be the only FACT that anyone has stated and agreed on, nothing else yet. I will wait for more facts, but firing 8 shots isnt domestic violence or sexual assault in context. I dont condone the firing of a weapon in a garage as SMART, but its certainly not to the level of what the new MLB policy is being cited for any suspension. We will see what and if the commissioner office says.

I think the commissioner's office sets a far harder tone with the Jose Reyes DV case, then the Chapman issue. But again, even if Chapman is suspended, I would have still done the deal based on the limited price paid to acquire. Its not an easy call if you are trying to avoid any association with players with issues, but frankly, thats harder and harder to accomplish.

An organization can easily break your heart to many times, and in so many ways, this day and age based on who they choose to sign or release. I cant lose sleep over it, but I also couldnt claim it wont one day take away the joy of rooting for them.

The same team which had Knobaulch?

I mean yeah again it sucks and if the investigation yields actual assault (at present time it doesn't) he has alot more to worry about than suspension, however when he is on the mound against Papi (if he ever plays for them) I am rooting for a strikeout and so would you if he was on your team....

Bucking 8 shots into your own house might go down as one of the worst moves in your life....

I mean nothing good comes from it, YET if he did that instead of actually beating her, then it goes down as a solid one ironic. No such thing as ADW--Assault on Dry Wall....

Joel Sherman of the New York Post hears that the Reds wanted Aaron Judge and one of Luis Severino or Gary Sanchez at the trade deadline.

Now thats a price I wouldnt have paid.....again, for what we did pay in the end, you couldnt pass him up, even if he misses the first month, (more or less) etc.

    P.S.

    • Within his piece, Sherman notes that a suspension is most likely forthcoming for Chapman, but it will probably be “more in the 10-25 game range” than the 40-plus games that would cost Chapman his shot at free agency next winter. (Chapman currently has five years, 34 days of MLB service, meaning that if he misses 46 days of the regular season, he’d fall shy of six years of service and miss out on free agency eligibility.)

    For whats its worth:

ESPN’s Keith Law writes that the Reds “must have wanted to get rid” of Chapman, because the package they received isn’t exactly inspiring.

Law calls the package “all quantity but little quality,” noting that Davis has the chance to be an average MLB starter (roughly a No. 4 starter, he specifies) and Cotham can pitch in the bullpen right now. Jagielo will hit for some power but can’t play third base, in Law’s estimation, and has plenty of injury issues. Clearly, the Reds didn’t get enough for a player of Chapman’s caliber.

If you want to talk yourself into having Chapman on your team that's fine but let's not just bush off firing 8 shots from a gun in a home. If Chapman is willing to do that that is a huge red flag to me in terms of character. Normal sane people don't do that for whatever the reason is.

There was another incident where a women came out of Chapman's hotel room crying that she was, I believe, tied down to a bed. Google it.

There's a lot of smoke around this guy. Just because he's never been charged doesn't mean he's innocent either.

I'm not going to go back and forth with this issue. If you guys have no problem with him on your team that's fine. I'm just happy my team had the opportunity to acquire him and decided to walk away. Just way too much liability and backlash to me.

First off you act like your team is filled with roses and daisies and had never had someone of character concerns. Or even someone who stole laptops from a college dorm. Is it the same, no, but Chapman hasn't been convicted either. And by the way none of us defended Chapman's actions...You want us to stop rooting for our team because a questionable character plays for them? That's silly, cause you'd be asking a lot of people to stop supporting a lot of teams.

Youre not wrong but on the field the guy is a stud. And 2 of the 3 stud relievers that struck out 100+ last year for NYY are LHP. Thats huge. As a Mets fan, I am jealous. I wanted Chapman to go with Familia and complete what would have been the best starter/pen combo in the league. We'll just have to settle for best starters and let the Yanks have the best pen.

I think I clearly stated multiple times that I don't expect the team I root for to be filled with saints and boy scouts but I would absoutely have an issue with my team willingly added someone like Chapman to the roster. I wasn't happy when Lugo was signed in 2007 for the same reasons and he was never convicted either. I've mentioned in the past I wouldn't want someone like that on my team because it would be incredibly hard to root for that player. I'm also not saying you need to or shouldn't root for your team if they added someone like that. Just my views and opinions.

Yeah my opinion on him has nothing to do with him as a player. He's a great pitcher, maybe the best RPer in the game. His off the field stuff (that we know of) just leaves too much risk and questions about him for me to want to deal with.

Couple things.. These groups that are mad at the Yankees for trading for Chapman were strangely silent when he was on the Reds.

Future HOF mutiple MVP winner Miggy has had domestic abuse issues in the past and also has 2 DUI's on his record. All is forgiven/forgotten though because of his talent.

If Chapman had been traded to the Marlins instead of the Yankees i dont think you would be hearing such outrage...

I've been pretty consistent on my stance on players with off the field issues. Good back and read some of my posts on Cabrera or others that have had DUIs or when the Rays signed Lueke (ask Nappy I used to kill the Rays for that and other players) or hell a few weeks ago when the Dodgers tried to trade for Chapman but the trade got held up. This has nothing to do with who traded for him, I would have bad mouthed any team, Red Sox included, if they picked him up.

But you do have a great point about if a player is good all is forgotten. I'm sure if it was a 5th starter or 4th OFer that had these issues people wouldn't be so forgiving of him.

I don't read anything NY based, but nothing I've seen anywhere, either with the national baseball press or in the Chicago media that I follow has been like that. Everything has been that he's a gamble based on a looming suspension, and that the Reds didn't get much in the trade for the same issues.
