There is no doubt that by himself SUH is a very good player. Top 5 in the league. But much like others he is one guy. If because other positions are weak Offenses can afford to double team him or scheme against him then he is easily neutralized, or limited. SUH will again prosper when we get talent around him. We just need so much on D it is going to take several years. At some point we will no longer be able to push out his huge contract. We will have to either extend him (30 this year) or trade him. The latter is going to be very difficult given his huge salary, especially for a aging player. He will begin to slow down at some point and all the years of wear and tear will begin to take hold on his body and when he does........

I know others in this thread have agreed with you and said it's a question of talent around Suh, but I just have a hard time explaining away what we saw because of "lack of talent". Most people thought on paper we had a good deal of talent on defense, especially DL, at the beginning of the year. Anyway, who knows, but my preferred explanation is still going to be the coaches unless I see us tank this year too. I think our talent level is way beyond what our record showed. But if we tank again this year.. OK I'll agree it's a talent issue.

I think it was both. I hope I am wrong about the DC. I think his inexperience will pose a challenge to taking this defense and fixing it. I am not saying he won't be able to do it. I just think it poses more a challenge then someone who has been there and done that. Fixing the defense could take several years with the wrong person and I am surprised that the choice was VJ. Good DB coach, but DC not so sure.

Maybe it is easier with a experienced HC but we don't have that either. Not saying Gace won't be able to do it. I just think being the HC of a NFL team is like running a corporation. If your corporation isn't doing well you don't hire a guy from the Assistant Manager of one of your stores to run 500 stores. It just isn't done for obvious reasons.

I haven't verified what VJ said about what D he is planning on running except what I have read here, No one has refuted it so it must be accurate. ranked for 2015 28th/run and 21rst pass is not good. Is that scheme or Talent?

I looked pretty good last night at the cap and Miami has the ability to solve the cap issue. With several free agents and some cuts they could be able to have around 30 mill to work with which is not a lot but they are not as bad a I thought. The problem I see there is when you cut you have to replace and we would be taking a chance on a lower priced rookie vrs a vet who you know what were getting. Next year should be ok. It is 2017 I am worried about and the turn over of Vets that I worry about. If we draft well and are smart in FA we should be ok.

If we can re-structure his contract... why is it even being discussed. Go nike on him and just do it.

We can restructure it. We will gain 18,0000 in cap space. With the offset of being over the cap it ends up being a net 15 mill. However 4.5 mill will be bumped to the remaining of his contract each year and will count. The year of concern is 2017 when we will have to pay him close to 30 mill. We could extend his contract but that will come with some challenges, surely his agent will play hardball at that point knowing the Phins are backed into a corner. I played around with the salary cap calculator which allows you to able to cut extend or restructure all the current contracts on the team and projects out cap numbers. The best I could do was to get us about 30 mill. Not bad but with incoming draft and free agency it doesn't leave us very much wiggle room given the amount of talent we need to replace.

It would suck if we have a decent year next year and then cant do much in 2017.

In his contract it states that the Fins can restructure one year of his contract, with or without his consent, so he would have to agree to restructure again in 17.

Might as well get the 28.5 mil year done with earlier in his contract, so as to give the team more flexibility in the future.

I don't disagree. Consider this for a minute. For 2016 we have 55 players under contract and are 3 million over the cap right now. If we go with what we got, which I think we all agree would be a mistake, then Gace is handicapped from the start. We have to make some moves to free up cap space for the draft and FA. Otherwise what is the point.

2017 we only have 24 players under contract and as it sits would have about 63 million in cap space. This is the year I worry about because if we bump SUH's salary then we would only have around 58 million and have to sign 30 players. We also have to renegotiate 14 other players approximately whose contracts expire at the end of 2016. We can not continue to function with the people we have because the money is just not there. It ultimately will mean half the team will most likely turn over. This may or may not be a bad thing. But, for sure resigning the guys we have is mathematically impossible.

Synapses: we pay to much per player for the production we have and most likely, will result in several more years of mediocrity. Not Gace's fault, just not so sure he is aware of it yet. Point #1 The draft guys will be learning new play's and schemes and coming out of college, they will take time to develop. Point #2 Gace claims he is going to tailor his plays to his players. How do you do that when they are still developing. You have not yet learned what they do well. Point #3 is Free Agents tend to be higher priced because they are vets and command more money. I see this as a down year for us in FA because we just don't have the money. We will be forced to rely on the newbies, and that has the potential to be a disaster given our past luck in the Draft.

This is nothing new. We have been in this funk for almost 20 years. Get control of the cap and this team might just do something. Aponte has her work cut out for her - no doubt. Gace will need the ability to cherry pick players to fit his schemes on both sides of the ball. Without it is like handcuffing one hand behind his back and throwing away the key

But the good news is we have a Great Front Office.......................
