Like Ireland. Hence my use of him as an example. We have reports of her siding with one person over another in a power struggle in the team. That may be okay with you, I think it's not part of her job. Stop trying to make everything fit your politics.

Hahahahahahaha, so a person isn't allowed to take a side?

    She took a side, what a *****.

Thanks for being so rational and coherent.
I don't think taking a side in an internal power struggle between the coach and GM is part of her job. Explain why you do.

Is the issue Dawn Aponte being a woman, or are you making it the issue? From what I've read she does a very good job with contracts, the cap, etc. but a few things have rubbed me the wrong way. I didn't like how she negotiated with Ryan Tannehill on "Hard Knocks". I especially didn't like her being tied to the hip with Joe Philbin and standing on the side during press conferences feeding cue cards to Philbin like a sad version of a ventriloquist act. I didn't like the power struggle and backstabbing stories, the ones relating to the Philbin/Ireland feud and the stories from her time in Cleveland. That would be true whether she was a man or a woman. He are some details from a good Miami Herald story, which also has some very nice things to say about the work that she does:

"However, some outsiders view her rise through the organization as a power grab. Potential Dolphins targets — including finalist Ray Farmer — have shied away from the job because they couldn’t get a straight answer as to whom they would report to on certain matters, sources said.

One candidate went so far as to call it a “toxic job.”

Once a subordinate to Jeff Ireland, Aponte wrested free of his control and became an ally of Philbin’s and a confidante to Ross. During the 2013 season, the Miami Herald reported that Aponte relayed Ireland’s criticism of the coaching staff and play-calling back to Philbin, widening the divide between coach and general manager.

When Ross embarked on a fact-finding mission after the end of the season, Ireland wound up losing his job. Aponte and Philbin survived.

Some around the league are not surprised. They believe she played a similar role in the Browns’ dismissal of George Kokinis less than a year into his time as Cleveland's general manager. Aponte was the Browns’ vice president of football administration at the time, and an ally of then-coach Eric Mangini, who, like Philbin, won that internal power struggle. A source familiar with the situation in Cleveland said Aponte “can’t be trusted.”

Although that’s just one side of the story, it was repeated more than once in Mobile this week, where league power brokers met for the annual Senior Bowl. Farmer was there, too, and so it would not be at all surprising if he heard the same criticism."

    Here and there
The original post was about her definitely leaving for Detroit, then it was retracted and said she wasn't leaving but had thought about it, but decided not to take the Detroit job.

"Per a league source, Aponte indeed met with the Lions and was considering making the move. As of Wednesday, she was leaning toward staying. According to Marvez, she decided not to leave."

She didn't decide to leave then change her mind, she was simply considering her options, weighted them and chose to stay. That also doesn't make her unhappy in Miami just because she was considering her options. She is successful at her job and is getting recognized for it, big deal. who wouldn't do that to maybe leverage for more money at her current job? (not that she did)

All this crap about being unhappy and she took the job for sure and was leaving but changed her mind is all BS from form someone that is negative about all that is The organization.

If you're talking about me I never mentioned the Detroit job. Why would she want to leave Miami? She's a snitch and backstabber and no one in the organization wants her around (according to Jeff Darlington) and yet the big eared mutant that owns the team from New York doesn't want to let her go. She's got a cushy gig.

She's not responsible for personnel decisions, just cap management and contracts. Why would the coach failing mean she would get fired?

    Grow up Sport.

Apparently you didn't read the entire thread. Aponte went to Detroit interviewed for the position and then came back to Miami where she mulled over leaving for 6 days. If you think she didn't have conversations with Ross and Tannenbaum your delusional.
I am sure you are 100% correct. Aponte had nothing better to do with her time but interview for another job. A job she had no intention on taking because she is enamored with the one she has.
    http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2016/01/28/new-report-aponte-staying-with-dolphins/

Dawn Aponte is leaving the Dolphins for the Lions. Unless she isn’t.

Alex Marvez of FOX Sports reported earlier on Thursday that Aponte would be departing Miami for Detroit. Marvez now reports Aponte is staying.

Per a league source, Aponte indeed met with the Lions and was considering making the move. As of Wednesday, she was leaning toward staying. According to Marvez, she decided not to leave.

Her decision to stay in Miami is a bit surprising, since her skill set overlaps considerably with that of executive V.P. of football operations Mike Tannenbaum. But Tannenbaum is running the show, not negotiating contracts, and if (as it appears) she is staying, it seems that maybe the days of Dolphins dysfunction could be coming to an end.

Meanwhile, go easy on Alex in the comments. He’s been all over the assistant coaching moves lately. No one in this business bats 1.000, and few own their mistakes the way Marvez did.

    I'm not dodging anything.

I was told that she's horrible for choosing a side. I think that's ridiculous and made it known I think its due to sexism. There's been nothing else to address directly that I haven't.

In fact, I've asked more than once if any of you know if this behavior happens anywhere else....and that has been dodged.

Shouldn't you be the one digging up examples of that type questionable behavior existing elsewhere, because that would strengthen your case, right? Why do you drag sexism into this anyway? Man or woman, crappy behavior is crappy behavior. Whatever Aponte has been faulted for, I wouldn't like it one bit more if it was a man committing the acts. Infighting, internal politics and deceit are the same no matter what type of underwear the person has on.

    No. The premise is ridiculous.

I'm being told that choosing a side makes her a horrible person. That needs to be proven its unique else you guys have no ground to stand on. Every team goes through shakes up and people stay on and people leave and we have very little info to know who stayed and who didn't.

I didn't bring sexism into it. We have literally zero information that her behavior is "crappy". What we do have is a set of vague complaints about her character that have been used on multiple women in power from Hillary to Thatcher.

    What premise is ridiculous?

As to choosing sides- no, nothing needs to be proven as unique- as I mentioned in a post a few minutes ago, I think that you should be the one to dig up examples of "choosing sides", to bolster your argument. Also, it's not unusual for NFL execs get fired due to staff changes, internal power struggles, etc, is it? And when it happens, and when crappy behavior accompanies those events, the sex of the offending parties is irrelevant.

You say that you didn't bring sexism into it? Well then, who wrote this in post #24 of this thread:

"People acting like she's back stabber and not a goddamned one of them knows a single thing that actually happened in that office and if they did, they have no idea if its typical across the league or not....but she's a woman with power...so boom."

That was you, right? Your words? Isn't that bringing sexism into the discussion? Are you moving the goal posts again and not taking responsibility for your words?

This is why I don't engage you on here, you're infuriatingly annoying because you don't pay attention and have poor reading comprehension.

First of all, you cut off the part of #24 that is directly replying to the person that brought sexism into this.

^ Which proves you aren't paying attention.

Secondly, I don't need to prove anything because the premise is ridiculous. I'm not sure why you can't figure out what premise is ridiculous when I stated the ridiculous premise right after I said it was ridiculous. Which happened here:

^ Which proves you have very poor reading comprehension.

Lastly, I didn't make the ridiculous claim. It was declared Aponte is a lot of negative things, and it was done with literally no evidence. No one but no one is backing up their claims about her being a terrible shrew. Not even in the article is their actual evidence or anything specific, just vague accusations. Where I come form, its incumbent on the accusers to prove their claims.

No, most likely she has an overinflated sense of her own importance in the organization and decided that she knew best who was right in the coach/GM battle and was going to step beyond the bounds of her duties to affect the outcome.

The article gave more than vague accusations, I think that is a mischaracterization on your part. The post that I assume you're referring to did not in fact bring up sexism, it simply critiqued Aponte for better or worse. Why do you feel differently, because it referred to Aponte as "she"? You jumped right into the sexism angle. Once again you're moving your own very precarious goal posts.

I was referring to post #22 and the comment as per that post in #23. You then jumped straight into the sexism angle- personally, I don't think that post #23 was justified, the previous post criticized Aponte, but how is that sexist?

And if those aren't the previous posts that you claim bring up the angle of sexism prior to your #24 jumping head first into the sexist waters, then which post are you referring to?

I honestly think that she does a good job, but I also think that there is a All Boys Club feel to it. Our cap situation always has an out in it so we aren't really strapped so i cant complain about the job she has done

Aponte and Philbin were criticized for their behavior and infighting, I think justly and simply because of what they did and how they acted. I'm not a fan at all of how Chuck Pagano and Ryan Grigson have gone at it, from what I've read I would have dumped Grigson a while ago if I were Jim Irsay. Regardless, that was a head coach and GM going at it, which is bad enough, but in our drama down here I'm not comfortable with Aponte being so deeply involved in the Ireland/Philbin conflict.

She's supposed to be handling contracts and the cap situation, right? Not coaching, not GM duties. She's a little too Machiavellian for my taste, trying to align herself with the best candidates, betraying confidences, bumming rides to NYC fro Ross to curry favor along the way. It's not her sex, it's not the job that she does, it's her prominent roles in team drama, infighting and political alliances that rub me the wrong way and lead me to question her. Who cares what sex she is, Aponte has reportedly been involved in some shady stuff both here and in Cleveland and that both concerns and annoys me.

The man is trying to have a respectful conversation with you and asked you several times a couple questions. Rather then answer why you feel the way you do you responded with questions of your own. When he asked again you doubled down and asked him your question again. Your dodging.

Its hard to say if the behavior happens elsewhere Fin D. I don't follow other teams at all really. It just makes sense from what was reported and what would occur anywhere else outside of football that Aponte had a job interview in Detroit. That is a fact. It would be crazy to think that 6 days or more passed while she was considering taking the job and the conversation didn't arise with Tannenbaum and or Ross. When you want to keep someone who you think is doing a good job most of the time it would result in additional compensation to get them to stay. That and the fact she has roots in So. Fla and the SUN

Great... but again, why do you care if she got a raise in pay?

People interview for jobs all the time, even if they are satisfied where they are. You would be STUPID not to, especially in the NFL. You should look through every door that presents itself. I do all the time in my career. I'm happy where I am, but... you got to be stupid to not entertain another opportunity that may interest you, pay you more, give you more opportunity to advance etc. etc.

Im sure Aponte did interview, did have an offer to consider, and probably did bring it back to Ross and Tannenbaum... again... who cares? That happens in businesses every damn day. Hell, the Baltimore Ravens encourage their players, and staffers to go out, get other offers, then bring it back to them so the organization can determine whether they want to keep them or not. It helps people determine their real value.

The thing about this Aponte thing is that everything is rumor, and it is fairly common for women to draw rumors in a mans world, that is undeniably where sexism is used as a weapon, like in construction, when a women shows up on a construction site she is automatically assumed by many to be either a lesbian or a gang bang whore, and the rumors will start flying around the site, you can't just believe rumors.

The only rumor that has any teeth, is the one where she told Philbin about Ireland popping off at the mouth on Philbin, throwing his HC under the bus, and that boys and girls is on Ireland, I happen to agree with Ireland, but as a GM you absolutely CANNOT speak these things in front of other people without Philbin being present, that is between Ireland and Philbin, so she was being loyal to THE MIAMI DOLPHINS if in fact she did do that, because that was Ireland being subversive from within, not Aponte.

No sure why it matters so much that she "interviewed" with Detroit. People do it as a courtesy and as part of personal networking all the time. I myself have zero interest in leaving my current Firm, but I interviewed with Google specifically due to a former employee I hold in high regard working there as a courtesy to him and in the event if I ever needed to seek employment elsewhere I would have contacts there I could reach out too. Had nothing to do with me being unhappy where I am currently or so sort of ploy on my behalf. In a work community as small as the NFL is overall, I have no doubt that personal networking plays a vital role in people being able to maintain jobs and move from organization to organization based on need if and when staff are released or for personal reasons.

Also, IMO, as bad as some consider things in Miami to be, I consider both Detroit and Cleveland to be worse situations with the teams/orgs, cities, states, and climate. Aponte has been "rumored" to want to be the NFL's first female GM. The only way I see her leaving Miami on her own accord is for a clear promotion - a GM or VPO gig.

    YMMV.

I could care a less what she makes. No most people do not go and interview for a new and different job unless they were seriously considering the pasture would be greener somewhere else. If nothing else to me it's disloyal to the Miami Dolphins. It's about Aponte being successful, which many have said and it has written about that Aponte can't be trusted. According to reports she did almost the same thing in Cleveland to get another guy fired. What I find interesting is that usually where there is smoke there is fire. Gace specifically mentioned the FO being solid and a big reason why he came here. It seems logically from everything that has been written about it that Tannenbaum is in charge - 100%. I believe he even said so. So if you believe he is the man for the job........well great. But if you believe like I do that he will run this team into the ground just like he did with the NYJ then you can understand my skepticism regarding the health of the front office.

Now lets expand that for a minute. If the front office is a mess, which I believe it is, and gone is Aponte's 2 cents and the guys input who they call the GM (really a glorified scouting recruiter), then it's a dictatorship. All I can see is the surface which is a head coach with no exp, a defensive coordinator with no exp and a offensive coordinator who wont call the plays. Throw into the mix that the guy who is supposedly known as a QB guru as some call him (Gace), Has his plate full and he is most likely will not going to work with Tannehill anywhere close as much as we were originally led to believe. This is why they hired a QB coach. Gace has his work cut out for him now and in the near future in terms of long term success with the cap. We can definitely free up about 30 million in cap space this year by restructuring a contract that has no business being on this team at this point. But hey most bought the signing of SUH as the thing that would make everyone around him better. Where has it gotton us? This year we must cut and replace several linemen, draft an entire draft, and go thru free agency with 30 million at our disposal. Next year we will only have 24 players left under contract and will need to sign 30+players to fill out rooster with about 63 million dollars.

I hate the fact that the reality is this team will be handicapped for some time to come. Just a shame that Gace will ultimately pay the price for the dysfunction most choose to ignore or don't want to believe because they want things to be "Rosey" and not negative. Tannenbaum is a joke. The sooner he goes the faster we can start to rebuild this once proud franchise.

Good Post. Why it matters is several reasons. Either there is dysfunction that we don't know about so she fears for her job or Aponte might have done it to send a message or she did it for more money. Or all of the above. Either way it is not for the benefit of the Miami Dolphins it is self Preservation. Seems to me like maybe she is not the team player she should be. I got a feeling it is about power and Tannenbaum has it all. You said yourself she wants to be the first female GM. Seems she was passed over for Chris Grier recently, hmmm, within several weeks she is interviewing elsewhere????

    Whats up with that????

As I've said to you more than once, the comment in 22 was the type of thing said about women in power. I don't care what you think was or wasn't justified. Much of the complaints about her personality or what people think went on behind closed doors smacks of sexism. And before you annoyingly ask why I say that, it is because AGAIN, these are the same types of things said about women in traditionally male roles and because no one here knows the first thing about her or what went on in our FO or other team's FOs.

Now for another one of your annoyingly "not grasping simple concepts" moments.....I did not bring sexism into the discussion. Post 23 brought it up, which I did not write. I agreed, but again, read this over and over until it sinks in......I DID NOT BRING SEXISM INTO THIS GODDAMNED THREAD.

Unless OCDolphins knows the poster he was talking about he or she has no business accusing someone of sexism. Hell for all he or she knows it could be a women who made the comment. Additionally, I don't believe for one second in today's world here at thephins.com that he or she who originally posted the sexism comment was thinking in there head.....I'm gonna say nasty **** about her because she is a women. Its Nonsense to even suggest it. Everyone is entitled to their opinion - right or wrong

    I think you're chasing Windmills... ;-)

She and Tbaum are tight going back to their NYJ days. I'd be surprised if there was a rift there after all the years they spent together and after Tbaum was brought in well after she had established herself with Ross for several years first.

Passing her over for Grier was logical as most GMs started off as scouts and working directly with personnel depts. GMs run the draft and mostly deal with player acquisition. Her background is accounting and she's a lawyer by trade. Not saying she couldn't do it, just that she lacks that background.

    YMMV.

Its not irresponsible to bring up sexism in this thread when no one here knows the first thing about this woman or her personality but they are making value judgements on who she is as a person and using language that is traditionally used to denigrate women in positions of power. I don't care if you or anyone else here understands or recognizes it. It is what it is.

Also, that post had nothing to do with what I said to you after you admonished me, incorrectly for dodging. Admitting you made a mistake would be a good first step.

I made a mistake. I went back and you did answer his question then asked one of your own. I apoligize for admonishing you.

I think you do care more then you let on about what others think or you wouldn't get into such discussions. I respect your opinions.

Just curious what words were you referring to about the sexism?

Thank you, I have the utmost respect for that. Seriously, major props.

Women in power are always accused of being power hungry, backstabbing, conniving, etc.

Now, don't misunderstand, I'm not saying she isn't those things. I'm saying I don't know but neither does anyone else. We have virtually nothing to indicate one way or the other. All we can do is look at the job she's actually done.
