Yes, generally speaking you want to avoid lying publicly. If Gase lucks into the playoffs, then Ross chooses to fire him, Ross will end up having to contradict the public ultimatum he's made. It's simple game theory - why commit yourself to anything?

I agree. We should not commit to such an arbitrary measure. We should go by his success rate. :shifty:

Yeah, but I don't expect the owner to be making decisions because of what irrational fans think is best.

Here's a what if: what if the team goes 10-6 the next three seasons, never wins the division, and manages to miss the playoffs every year. Would/should that warrant Gase being fired?

There is NOTHING he can do to not garner unwarranted criticism. Again, there's no play, no move, no anything he can make or not make. Its playoffs or bust or the fans revolt. Its been that way since Wanny. Our fans and media are horribly impatient.

What he's done is buy time, because again, the fans will start the meltdown if we don't hit playoffs by year 2, but at least they know there's another year before they can start blasting him too bad.

They are the ones that buy tickets and merchandise.

Then maybe he doesn't fire them. What he said is not a contract so he's not beholden to it above all else.

It buys Gase time. It gives him 3 full years.

Is it being impatient to want to make the playoffs more then 1 time in 15 years?

Is it impatient to want to win the super-bowl more then 1 time every 45 years?

I think that due to our drought, people are going to become impatient because sometimes the things the front office does just leaves you scratching your head.

For example. Currently for 2016 - 87 million of the 154 million cap is tied up in 10 players. That leaves 67 million for 43 players which includes the draft and FA.

There is talent on this team but for some reason we always find a way to squander it.

Right...but then, if he doesn't fire them, those same fans will blast him for being a liar, and use this as just another example of "Dumbo" not knowing how to run a team, and how am owner who doesn't keep his word is hurting the franchise.

Really, I just don't see the upside of him saying this publicly. It's lose/lose for him, imo.

And I'm by no means anti-Ross.

So, you believe, that under any circumstances, going 10-6 the next three seasons, but missing the playoffs, warrants firing him? That's crazy.

If Ross is going to be honest, so am I:

Ross is no spring chicken. He may only have a handful of good years left in him, so he wants to see a winner before he kicks the bucket.

    Right there with ya.

I wanna see one before I kick the bucket, too, and I'm in my 30s!

    Yeah, I said it!

Aren't we really taking about unseating the New England Patriots.

Gace knew this going in. Or is he naive. Probably, is the answer. Probably naive in a lot of areas. Which is why I pointed out in other threads that he has done some of the same things Philbin did. What did I mean? A smart person, who understands what is at stake ALWAYS surrounds himself with people smarter then him. Some of Gace's first moves were to bring in other first timer's. Gace paring inexperience with inexperience is a recipe for failure. JMO

Gace's job is to get the team to the super-bowl, which includes the playoffs obviously. I have said this over and over on this forum. There is no trophy for second place. Until people start believing in that - we will never get there because most are happy with making the playoffs. Setting the bar well below the actual target is a recipe for under achievement.

Every decision made is critical, no matter how small it maybe. Which is the reason Gace should be surrounding himself with guys who been there and done that. I.E : Beside talent the mistro of the Denver defense was none other then Wade Philips - been there done that. Without his experience dissecting the New England and Carolina Panthers they would have been sitting home the way Payton played. The challenge is to put together, finally, a team that can make a run at why the game is played. If Gace is unable to put together those people - we are behind the 8 ball from the start.

We can read and read into all the feel good statements we want to to try and convince ourselves this is the guy. From what I have seen so far - I wonder. With that being said I will support him mainly because it doesn't matter what I think and I love this team. I see red flags and usually when those are present it means something. Lets hope I am wrong

I really have no idea how you can claim the fans are impatient. Ross has been the owner for seven years now and the Dolphins haven't had a single winning season over that period of time.

It would appear to me, you are overly patient with this owner. To win Super Bowls, you have to hire the best and brightest.

In Denver the Broncos were in the SB in 2014 and they made the playoffs in 2015. Yet that wasn't good enough for their fans or the Broncos front office. So the FO fired John Fox, even though he had led the Broncos to the playoffs every year he was their head coach.

The Broncos then went on to win the SB this year. It was impatience with a winning team which allowed the Broncos to finally win a SB.

I believe Dolphins fans have every right to questions decisions made by this ownership. Especially when he hasn't shown over his first seven years that he has any idea when it comes to hiring quality individuals to run this organization.

Every fans should have the attitude, "I'll believe it when you prove it to me".

    Gase. Gase. Gase.

With the team we have, do you really think we're close to the playoffs? Even if we fix the oline, the defense is a wreck. So, essentially, with the potential salary cap issues, you really have to basically hit on every draft pick for the next two drafts to get impact players that can then the team around. I'm not so site that is realistic.

Now according to PFT ross has his "associates" backtracking for him, saying he was speaking in general terms.

He'd really be better off just not speaking in public, or at least speak in general terms. I think his intentions are in the right place, he just... says too much.

and... FFS... there's 4 letters in the last name of our new HC... can we at least ****ing spell that right?!

    I do.

I think we were poorly coached. I think our offense is set with an average swing tackle and 2 average guards, not too mention, as we've discussed, we just have to stop abandoning the run game after that and play around Thill's strengths.

The defense isn't great, but a decent LB or safety opposite Jones changes things, IMO.

While I agree it was bad to say this to the media, I think what isn't being considered is that maybe Gase already knew this timeline beforehand. Maybe it was presented to him in the interview or something like that and he was already fully aware before even joining the organization. But, yeah, the media knowing about this is not good, IMO.

Yes he did, it's the headline of the story: http://realtime.blog.palmbeachpost....dolphins-owner-sees-new-coach-as-next-bill-b/

    plus...he is quoted:

“Instead of getting a retread that really hasn’t had a great track record as head coach, I was looking for somebody that really could be the next, if you will, Bill Belichick, Bill Parcells, you know, really great head coach, and I think we got one,” Ross said Monday morning during a speech to the Palm Beach Civic Association.

I don't think we need to worry about Ross holding to this, he has no problem going back on what he said, which is another problem with him, remember that a vote of confidence from Ross is nearly like getting a pre pink slip.

The problem with Ross is that he just says what he thinks the people want to hear, carpetbagger, but he doesn't understand that erodes his stability as an owner, personally, I don't believe a word he says, so how many of the players and staff feel the same way?

Bottom line, no one believes in a guy that they don't believe.

in the current state of the NFL, Ross hasn't said anything that every coach, player and fan doesn't already know. If anything, he's just stating the obvious.
While it certainly would have been a little easier if Ross had kept quiet, I don't think this is a big deal and I don't think it changes anyone's perception, even Gase's.

He took a 4-12 team (or something down there) to the playoffs and won a game. In Cleveland. That's like winning 10 superbowls.
