Heat would have to go into luxury tax to sign Joe Johnson, right?

Skolnick said it's a pretty high percentage too, the chances him coming to Miami. Not just a front runner, he's saying he thinks it gets done.

Wondering how this affects what the Heat have been talking about with respect to luxury and repeater taxes.

Joe can still shoot and pass from the outside, play some D. Basically a Mike Miller, no?

When he signed with the Nets, they wanted him to be more than what he is, which is a great shooter and ok defender. If we can get him, he'd fit what we need perfectly.

All this stuff about avoiding the repeater tax was just BS? They're not seriously thinking about ruining their 2016-17 plans for Joe Johnson are they?

They'll be under the cap next year

Being under the tax just saves Micky money and resets their clock. So for example if we stay under the tax but go over the cap again next year we would have an additional exception in 2017.

    It's not a huge deal.

And I imagine they have some plan. Maybe he agrees in principle but they just don't formally sign him until the 10th

Heat can stay under tax and sign JJ if they waive a player, like Udrih and some other team claims him

We may have some shenanigans afoot with Philadelphia or some other team below the floor, like in the off season they give us some 2nd round pick 50 years from now for cash

So they could fit Joe Johnson if they waive Udrih?

    That seems like a no-brainer.

Yes, if some team claims Udrih's contract.

That's why I say there may be some back channel shenanigans going on

Well then, welcome aboard Joe Johnson! And a big ha-ha to Cleveland who think everyone wants to just go and sign with them. Another great move by Riley & Co.

I might be wrong, I am not really that well versed in this, but as I understand it after the 15/16 season repeater tax changes from "last 3 consecutive seasons paying luxury" to "3 of the last 4 seasons paying luxury" so if the Heat do not stay under luxury this season, even if they are under luxury in the 16/17 season, they would still be on the hook for repeater tax if they are paying luxury in the 17/18 season.

If however they remain under luxury this season and 16/17 season, repeater tax would truly reset and they would not be in peril until 2020. That's why they were trying so hard to get under luxury tax this season.

I think they'll do some wiggling to sign Joe Johnson and still remain under luxury this season.

no one except lebron wants to actually move to Cleveland. Everyone Lebron has on his team was forced there by trade and stayed cause of bird rights giving them an extra year. Name me a player on Lebrons team that isnt a scrub that signed as a FA to play in Cleveland.

    Cleveland sucks

Ira and Bobby Marks now both talking about Philly claiming Beno

    The Heat knows something.

Ira also saying that if Philly claims Beno we would have space for two minimum contracts under the tax. Ty Lawson too?

My guess is the waived player would be Green. Why would anyone sign Udrih? He's hurt. With Johnson, Green probably becomes expendable.

(That's because Joe Johnson wanted playing time and the Cavs have so many good players he wouldn't have gotten as much)

Your point is still valid, but essentially Kevin Love did. He was traded there, but he wanted to be there and then re-signed.

That was part of my argument why Lebron going back to Cleveland was a poor basketball decision in terms of ever being the GOAT. Attracting FAs was always going to be a challenge. I stated before the move that they could be the best in the East while Lebron was the best player in the game for the next couple of years. We all knew he had a ton of miles on him for his age so he was inevitably going to start that decline in the next few years (from when he left) so attracting talent around him was going to be increasingly important. It may have been the right decision for him b/c he just loves Cleveland ???? Or b/c he wants to be in charge and have his posse (IMO the most likely reason he left). But as a pure basketball legacy, maximize his odds of winning the most rings, it was a poor decision.

Philly would take Udrih simply to get over the floor

They'd cut him as soon as the accounting is baked in.

No intention of ever playing him

To me, no need for Marcus Thornton now that we have Joe Johnson and Gerald Green.

But if we're letting Beno Udrih go then I could definitely get with Ty Lawson. Hassan Whiteside would appreciate him, I'm pretty sure.

Huh? That's kind of strange, but I guess Pat and Andy probably know exactly what they're doing. Albert Random wrote another great piece explaining exactly how the Heat could stay under the threshold, but he also said it probably isn't that big of a deal for them to do so because they'll be under it next year. The "adding more than JJ" leads me to believe they may have just said screw it on the tax, but they don't have to waive anybody else to sign another player seeing as they still would have another open spot. But in adding another player, they'd have to bank on another team signing not 1, but 2 players. The 76ers probably wouldn't be motivated to do that because Udrih would be plenty. Maybe they know someone would claim Green considering he's on a minimum deal anyway.

Or maybe they ARE going to say screw the tax and sign 3 players they think can help.

Here are some excerpts from the article:

That's just a little bit of it. The whole thing is here: http://heathoops.com/2016/02/miami-heat-on-the-verge-of-signing-joe-johnson/#more-27535

Based off that. You would think if Miami and Philly had already agreed to this, then the Heat would wait to cut Udrih because it won't hurt the Heat and would save the Sixers the most money possible.

Barry Jackson also saying they'll continue to look. Says there's interest in Marcus Thornton. That would make sense, especially if Green is cut. He's actually a better spot up shooter than Johnson at this point.
