Adam Beasley @AdamHBeasley 3m3 minutes ago Star pass rusher Mario Williams reportedly visiting Miami Dolphins http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/nfl/miami-dolphins/article64215377.html …
From Barry Jackson: ### Pro Football Focus rated Williams' 2015 performance 93rd among 110 qualifying edge defenders. Despite the dearth of tackles, PFF did rate him in the top half against the run --- 46th. By comparison, expected Dolphins free agent target Williams Hayes rated fifth against the run, Olivier Vernon 12th and free agent Derrick Shelby 19th.
This feeling in my gut is all too familiar. We are about to make a big mistake. If you read the background on MW, he pretty much gave up at the end of last season, and it sounded like the Bills' locker room wasn't too sad to see him go. Miami is definitely not a win-now team, and I am curious to see what his attitude is if things start off rough. I really worry that there are obvious red flags that this guy just wants to get paid one last time, and we all know, Stephen Ross is eagerly sitting around somewhere, checkbook in hand. If that does not scare me enough, I have to wonder; what is the next domino to fall? Could a Williams signing be the end of Wake? From a front office standpoint, I could see their rationale. They could be looking at Williams' age vs. Wake's age. I would personally rather roll the dice with Wake's injury and salary knowing that he will give it his all as opposed to Williams. Scenario II - Have they heard rumors of Vernon getting an offer that they cannot match? If that is the case and they think they could get Williams for a little more than the price of Shelby, at least the move makes sense. I think Shelby has more or less peaked, and I would rather have the upside of MW. Scenario III - The end of Dion Jordan. In my favorite of scenarios, we essentially give Jordan's salary plus a little extra to MW. I would feel a lot more comfortable giving a guy a contract with 96 career sacks and a bad attitude a contract as opposed to a guy with as many substance abuse infractions as he has career sacks. In this scenario, we have insurance against a big offer for OV as well as the possibility that Wake is not ready for the start of the season. Scenario IV - I am totally wrong. We cut salary elsewhere while keeping all the aforementioned players on the roster. This would make the least amount of sense because it would really hurt our ability to fill other glaring holes (G, CB, LB). I have been a fan long enough to know that this is not out of the question. Like I said before, I am not a big fan of the player, but there are certainly scenarios I like better than others. I can assure you all one thing: this is not a move that will be made in a vacuum. Other dominos will fall because of this. "Hold on to your butts..."
Looks like I was wrong, man! Sorry about that. That being said, this might just be an investigatory thing. Wake and OV (at least in some capacity) are still Dolphins.
Wrong about what brother? We're all fans speculating on potential moves. I agree with you, they probably want to see where Williams is at contract demand-wise.
it was stupid to tag vernon in the first place, 12.7 mil guaranteed is insane for a guy whose only contributing factor in the first half the season was when he gifted the jaguars a game. i love wake but with his injury and his age i would take mario williams if the price was in the same ballpark.
If MW was just chasing a pay check Im surprised that its with the dolphins. Id take him. It will have a domino effect on the draft as it would make it more likely they draft a MLB or corner. Anything we get back from DJ is a bonus. I think 5mill/yr for miller is fare.
It allows them to let the other teams set his market, and retain the right to match an offer if they feel they can stomach it. If he gets huge money from someone else, like Clay did last year, then they let him go and that 12.7 million goes back into the money that they can spend. OV is very unlikely to actually sign the tender and play under it this coming season.
There's a rumor the Fins are close to getting Williams. Tbaum seems to be thrown same guy he's always been.
So if we let OV walk and sign Williams to something much cheaper, we save significant cap and may get better....also cut Wake? Interesting.
I know that at some point, Wake isn't going to be playing football for the Dolphins any longer. I just don't think it should be now, because you need him in that locker room.
It's Suh's team now, so it might be better to just let Wake go and let the Suh era swing into full force.
By all accounts he hasn't been a big time leader, a leader yes, but more of a quite type, leader by example. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but I don't think the locker room will change much because of his lack of presence there.
