I like the potential of him and Suh with Wake disrupting teams passing game. We still need some young help in the draft though.

they both favor rushing from the left(I can't believe neither one tried to get better on the blindside) so Wake may not be part of the equation. If so, I would trade him for something at least.

I don't see how anyone can feel comfortable with Mario Williams as bad as he dogged it last year in Buffalo.

He was awful, and I don't think his excuses really fly.

He was a 292 DE playing outside linebacker.
He was not cut out to be a linebacker.Ryan stuck a square peg in a round hole.

I'm not going to expect a Pro Bowl performance from Mario Williams this upcoming season, but I won't say I'm not excited about seeing him, Suh and Wake (if he stays) together on the same DL.

Hell, if we get lucky and get 2013 type seasons from Williams, Wake, Kiko and Maxwell, we'll be in for quite a treat defensively this season.

    (wishful thinking, I know :()

So are Wake and Williams going to split time in the same position?

Is one going to switch to Vernon's old spot? What if Vernon does stay? Are the 3 going to compete for snaps?

    Is this signing just depth?

    Someone enlighten me, please.

I got all excited last year with the signing of Suh and the defense we already had. I'm going to reserve judgment until after the first game of the regular reason. I'm tired of getting excited in the off season only to feel like I've been kicked in the nuts...twice once the season begins.

Him playing linebacker is academic when he's rushing the passer 95% of the time at the same general technique as he would as a 4-3 DE. This isn't Mario Williams first stint as a 3-4 OLB(it's technically his third), and he played up to his standards in a very similar Mike Pettine defense.

I'll let CK enlighten you, instead.

It doesn't look like Vernon is going to stay, but if he does, Williams might stay mostly on the left on early downs while Wake rides the bench and on passing downs they'll probably rotate Wake and Williams in there.

The Williams signing is not that surprising given his dimensions and the desire to acquire larger (length) DE's

I don't know man, some people would say he looked to have lost a step last season. He's 31...Not all that much younger than Wake....I mean....does this mean we aren't going to bring Wake back? I like Williams and would have been doing backflips if this was five years ago, but this just seems like one of those moves that ends up being a lateral one at best. I'm going to say that Williams has two really good years left in him, so hopefully he bounces back. Why did he struggle so bad under Rex Ryan? One would think a guy like Williams would flourish under a defensive minded coach like Rex.
FWIW I'm definitely not mad about us getting him, nor am I trying to be negative...I just hope this move pays off. I want to see Williams take Brady's head off.

Thats what I am thinking. If I remember correctly he was a liability against the run last year in the games he has played. Not to mention being 34 coming off achilles injury.

    In his own words (SportsBuzz):

"What Mario Williams had to say in his just-completed conference call:

    ### Williams said the Dolphins' coaching staff appealed to him and that he liked owner Stephen Ross.

"I was able to have background information on a lot of our guys who were there, played under certain coaches," he said. "The direction the organization wants to go with top to bottom was appealing. I've never been in a room with an owner; he was full of energy. You're talking to somebody with so much enthusiasm, so much energy and passion for the team. It [went] straight down to the last guy."

He decided not to take a lot of other visits because of "the level of excitement and positives I had from them. It was almost a no-brainer.

    ### He likes the Dolphins' "mindset" and "what we're planning on doing. I felt like I could be a big part of that. I talked to Earl Mitchell. I was fortunate enough to speak to him on the phone. We're all in." He said he also has spoken to Mike Pouncey and Ryan Tannehill. "You pick their brain about general flow of things as far as being there in Miami."

    ### Williams declined to specifically address anonymous quotes in the Buffalo News that were critical of him. "The biggest thing talking to the Dolphins is it brings excitement and a level of energy I feel I've never had before. Whatever scheme that's run, you're going to see who Mario Williams is. Everything is going to be fine,... right where it needs to be. I feel like I'm still young -- stronger, faster than I was."

    ### He said: "Every day I wake up, I feel I have something to prove. I can't wait."

    ### On his sack numbers falling from double digits to five last season: "Last year wasn't a great year. It was a minor setback. But nothing feels better than knowing as a Dolphin, I'm going to have an impact and help the Dolphins get in a better place."

    ### On new Dolphins teammate Kiko Alonso, with whom he played in Buffalo:
"He's a natural football player. [Because of his play calls in the huddle], we always give him a bunch of crap when I played with him before. He's going to do nothing but ball.""

    Saying all the right things.

Also, say what you will about Stephen Ross, but him meeting with the players seems to be a pretty big deal. I am surprised that Mario's comments about not being in a room with any owners before, especially as a former #1 overall pick.
