Watched The Jungle Book today. Nothing can replace the original, a childhood classic. But it is a damn good remake.

Watched "In the Heart of the Sea". Wished I hadn't.

The movie was terrible for a Ron Howard film. The ladies may like it cause of Chris Helmsworth, but the whale was the only good thing in this sinking ship of a movie that didn't sink fast enough. The CGI was bad and they tried to mask it with sea spray on the lens. You didn't feel any connection to any of the characters. I was playing chess on my phone after a few mins into it, then couldn't wait for it to end.

The new Jungle Book kicked the original's *** in every single way. Just because the other came first doesn't mean it deserves anything other than the truth, which is that it was a decent movie from a horrible period. The ending from then was horrible as was the overt racism.

The new one was incredible from start to finish. Damn near flawless.

Saw Batman vs Superman last night. The listings didnt mention The Jungle Book, I would have gladly seen that instead. I left before the end of Batman Superman. Not that it was that bad, but it was hard to follow.

That's good to hear. Even with the quality people involved, I wasn't expecting much out of it. Curious to eventually see it at home now.

See it in the theater. That is a movie to watch huge.

I would also say there are parts that are little intense for 5 and unders. I say that because everything is close to photoreal instead of a cartoon so it makes it harsher.

Any fans of true theatrical brilliance out there? Then you have to put 'The Best Offer' with Geoffrey Rush atop your watch list. It's won 19 awards, was nominated for another 21, and has an IMDb rating 7.8. I gave it a 9, one of my highest rated movies in a while, and I'd put it up there in quality & value with stuff like Spotlight, Imitation Game, Bridge of Spies, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo [American], and Her.

It's a drama-mystery about the greatest auctioneer on the planet [a quirky, dissociative old man who has no idea how to relate to or deal with women] who becomes obsessed with an extremely reclusive, dissociative young gal herself who inherited a massive collection of antiques & fine art and sought to employ his service.

It's sounds boring but it's not. Not by a long shot. That's just all I'm allowed to say about this masterpiece and all you're allowed to know. Don't read anything about it.... AND DEFINITELY DO NOT CHECK OUT THE PREVIEW. Just watch it [on Netflix I believe]. I will tease with this though- it may or may not be the greatest love story ever told.... and not in some silly sappy way that makes a grown man not wanna watch it..... and I won't give away the ending either. It's a deep movie with lots of subtleties that requires considerable reflection.... so if anything seems confusing upon conclusion, or if you have any questions, I'll gladly run through it afterward.

Saw Eye In The Sky at the theater and enjoyed it and thought it was a very well crafted movie that presented the morale dilemmas in a well balanced way and it was very well acted .

Watched Man Up on Netflix and it was a good , better than average movie that was funny but in the low key way , sweet but took too many presumptions in moving the story imo . Could have moved more to a edgier more direct presentation but liked the leads , Lake Bell and Simon Pegg . Not a great movie but makes my cut for worth watching if you like this genre of movie .

The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada is a Tommy Lee Jones movie I really liked . A border western that has great vistas and is allowed to meander at a pace that fits the movie and story very well . Not conventional and that is a good thing for me , soulful and poignant and craggy , the story and pace and screenplay work really really well . If you're a Tommy lee Jones fan or like the south western ambience I highly suggest seeking this film out .

Just thought this may be something that would be a good thing the community here could share or we could take advantage of . Just started using Google Drive , and one of it's positives is you can share files with people you chose to do so .

It is free with 15 GB of total Google storage but for a $1.99 a month you get 100 GB's , so that's a real good value. I started to put some TV shows on there as we can access them when we are on Vancouver Island where we don't elect to get cable tv. Then I just added movies as well . Very very convenient , you can watch on a computer , laptop , Ipad or a smart tv , as long as you have an internet connection .

Anyway , I'd be more than ok to add members to the list and who knows if enough people follow this it could be where there would be a lot of movies or tv shows that would in essence be in a library for dolfans .

Send me a message if this is something that may be of interest , maybe we can get our own Fin Network going !

Has anyone seen Enemy [2013] with Jake Gyllenhaal?
Holy cow I had to watch this cryptic, intricate, psychological mind-bender a second time with a pen and piece of paper to try and fully figure out, and I'm still left needing to piece a few things together dammit. If you've yet to watch it and feel like going on this ride, know that there's a strong use of symbolism & imagery and that everything from start to close is said and done and shown with purposeful intention.

Hopefully a few of you have seen it or will see it soon so we can spark up an page of inevitable discussion b/c I need a few more brains on this thing.

I saw it this morning, and really enjoyed it. I wouldn't go as far as say I loved it though. Did a bigger write up in the MCU thread. Highly recommend it though, especially to any Marvel fan. A must see, but I would personally say its not in my top 5 MCU movies.

I just got done watching Nightcrawler, another Jake Gyllenhaal movie and I'd forgotten how sneaky good he is. Nightcrawler is definitely worth a watch.

I had forgotten all about Enemy, but Im going to put that on the list for sure.

Todd: Will def. check out enemy.

Racing Extinction. A documentary about the amount of animals that have gone extinct with the help of human beings. in addition, it talks about our own possible extinction. While I didn't love the documentary, I found parts of it really interesting. Namely, the aspects that could lead us to our extinction. In fact, after doing some post movie research, it seems many scientists believe that the extinction of our species is imminent by 2100 w/o drastic course corrections that don't appear to be coming. To think about all that we've achieved in the last 50 years and what we can/will achieve in another 50, may just end up being the sum total of our species is depressing. On the other hand, it's oddly comforting to know that I could be apart of the last generation of humans. And when I die, the human species will soon follow and I won't miss any really miss any cool advancements (lol, that's even weirder to write than it was to think). It's also kind of sad that we pour so much money, research, time into meaningless things rather than the issues that could kill us. Then again, we drink, smoke, do drugs, and all sorts of activities we know are harmful to our long term well-being w/o much care and consideration. It also got me thinking about Utopia, a TV that I really enjoyed (I think it was Todd who put me on to that one too) about a conspiracy to make most of the human species infertile as a means of population control to save the planet. Shame HBO canceled their adaptation...

Hope you enjoyed it! My local cinema only does IMAX for 3D sadly, which makes me sick (literally) and I don't see properly, so I only go to regular size screens. Some of those are really large too, but some of them are so small it feels like the movie is just on a really big TV.

that was a really good movie. Luckily IMAX 3D doesn't bother me, but I have two friends like you that when we see movies, we have to see regular movies in normal theaters. The Capt America movies are just better than many of the other Marvel movies. The parts given to Spider Man got me super excited.

I saw 'The Revenant the other day. Great movie. Beautiful cinematography, and Tom Hardy is awesome as a complete bastard. The movie is more inspired by the novel than based on it, as there are quite a bit of difference. I recommend reading the book as well.

Sorry, couldn't resist... no real idea why this was a Captain America movie, however, I really enjoyed it and in particular, the action scenes. The plot was a little weird though. Like, why wasn't Vision with them at the beginning while in Wherevera? He could've saved those dozen or so lives that kickstarted this whole Tony Stark turns Government automaton from the beginning.

As it was Bucky WinterSoldier and Black Panther ruled this movie. Daniel Brühl's Zemo was more along the lines of the brooding and adaptive villain that the BvS Luthor should have been IMO.

Considering Tony Stark's personality, ego, and vanity, this really made no sense to me that Tony became the "Government man", main antagonist (more so than Zemo), and was so easily manipulated by Zemo and Ross. It was a really un-Tony Stark like portrayal.

Zemo was confusing as Hell. His WHOLE goal was to destroy "a Nation", however it seemed like he only really wanted to kill all the Soviet Super-Soldiers AND the Avengers, however most of what he was doing was as morally bankrupt as the same stuff he was blaming them for, and was solely hingent upon Cap, Buck, and Tony showing up inside the battle chamber at the end.

Loved how bad-*** Bucky WinterSoldier was once in engaged. He reminded me of Damon's Bourne. The brain-washed super-solder with bad memories and wanting to be left alone, who is responsive to manipulation, only Bucky Bad-*** is so easily flipped on and into kill everyone mode. He can run down a car... and not just run it down, run over it, and then out-run it... Dafuq? Really enjoyed watching him snatch the motorcycle, whip it around mid-air and bring it down, FULL-SPEED with him sliding onto it and taking off, as well as some of the abilities of a bionic arm, such as resisting the arm bar that Black Panther and Black Widow attempted upon him. Would enjoy knowing more of his real capabilities... as least as they were before Iron Man blew his arm off and they put him back into Frozen Hibernation. Will he return and be re-fitted?

As for the Black Panther, he was a cool cat. lol... His suit apparently enhances his abilities as well to the point that he could hand fight the Winter Soldier. His claws seemed a little "Wolvie~esque" though. Cool car chase tunnel scenes which seemed a bit deja vu.

Also, Bourne-like, was the jumpy/blurry/shakey camera style at times during all the fight scenes. It does make the scenes more intense and hides the CGI.

Zemo, the villain, was more weird than evil and, like the UN and SoS, Ross, AND former King of Wachovia (or whatever), really so stupid and blind that they blamed the Avengers for the sh*t that happened instead of the bad-guys, or really couldn't determine that there wouldn't have been MORE deaths if the Avengers hadn't acted as they did, when they did?

I did enjoy Ant-Man and the new Spidey. Really enjoyed it when Ant-Man got inside Iron Man's armor and start disabling stuff while telling Tony that he was Tony's “conscience” and that it had been a while since they'd last spoken.

Spidey was cool and fun in this movie. Hoping the next Spider-man movie is better than any of the others of the past 10 years. We'll see.

Also, wondered what's up with Cap throwing down the shield and leaving it, then later sending the letter saying he's out there waiting and watching and will return when needed. Interesting...

I agree. Fits Baloo, but did not fit Walken's more sinister King Louie in this iteration. Also couldn't help but Anakin vibes from the kid who played Mowgli. Visually awesome though. Also, Idris Elba did a wonderful job, easily the best non-voice actor voice actor in this movie.

Ant Man. Capt. America III got me interested in the character. I went into it without knowing anything else about the character other than what I saw in civil war. I have to say, that was one of the more entertaining movies I've seen lately. I don't know anything about the comic or character, but I thought Rudd did a great job with it. Will def. watch any future sequels.

Its perfectly consistent with Iron man's character because...
They've spent the last however many movies showing him evolve as a character. If you've watched all of the Iron Man's and Avengers, you see Tony becoming more and more guilt ridden and basically suffering from PTSD. Don't forget he created Ultron. He created him because of the events of Avengers and Iron Man 3. He wanted to protect the world and it literally backfired, which is why he agreed they needed oversight. Which means, btw, that all of the events in Avengers 2 were his and by extension, the Avengers' fault. (which justifies Zemo's anger actually) His character arc has been a slow burn.

Cap OTOH, has faced the same stuff but he sees it from a different light of course. He knows he's virtuous. He knows his intentions are pure, but his arc has gone from company man to seeing decision after decision from higher ups backfire. The switch for him basically happened with Hydra in Cap 2 and went all the way with Tony creating Ultron. This is barely scratching the surface.

This is why I said once people start really digesting this movie, the layers they are gonna see are going to blow some minds. This movie and culmination of movies is far deeper and more complex then most franchises will ever get. In time, i predict this series will get credit for sophisticated storytelling over action and cgi.

    Just finished watching Victoria. http://123movies.to/film/victoria-6667/
One of the best movies I've seen all year. As raw, intense, and gritty as it gets and well worth the awards it's piled up IMO. It's about a somewhat despondent young Spanish girl recently living in Berlin who gets befriended by a group of local German guys late one night after a club lets out... followed by the unforgettable early morning events that unfold immediately thereafter.

Keep in mind, this film is done in real time over a 2 hour period and was amazingly & impressively shot in a SINGLE CONTINUOUS TAKE which heightens the authenticity of the film's feel and really brings it to life... like you're right there with them the entire time. Since it's done in real time, the first half of the movie sets up the character background and does a great job of personalizing the group to the viewer. The second half is a gripping nail-biter full of tension and emotion. There's one particular scene that's probably the most tension-filled that I've experienced in a long time. Most of the dialog is in English BTW [the shared common tongue of a girl from Spain and some guys from Germany]. Likely would've received an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Film if not for the excessive English dialog.

PS: don't watch the preview. It gives too much away.

I watched Tomorrowland last night, and came away disappointed. I won't say surprised, because I knew that the movie got mediocre reviews and had done poorly at the box office, but I still wanted to give it my own shot. I wouldn't have missed anything by passing. The movie teases you into thinking that its going to be really interesting, if a bit hokey, at the very start. Then it jumps to follow another character, and I think that director Brad Bird tries to harken back to the live action movies from Disney and others ireted at families in the 1980s. It went from fairly interesting, to repetitive, to flat out full, and by an hour in, I was still feeling like the movie was trying to gather its steam. By the time things actually get started moving, there's another lead up where it seems things will be cool and then.....kerplop. It just completely falls flat the last 20+ minutes or so. I think that they could have told a very similar story in a much cooler and more interesting way, and cut out at least half of the movie before the one hour mark and replaced it with something better afterwards. They left way, way too much unanswered and to why and when things happened.

I will say that the two young actresses in the film both did a good job, though I was surprised to find afterwards that the lead actresses was much older than I thought she was. The younger one, who played Athena, I think could have a real future.

Finally saw Civil War. Excellent movie overall. Tad slow to get moving, but once it did I thought the pacing was good. The biggest issues for me were the whole "Avengers are bad!" thing and then Zemo's plan.
I totally get Zemo's motivation - he is a bit weird and unhinged, he is full of vengeance and all that. But it's one of those rube goldbergian style revenge plots. I mean, what happens if Sam tells Tony to get bent? Or if team Tony stops Cap at the airport? To many variables. I know it's a comic movie (Spider Man even threw in the quip about Cap's shield not obeying the laws of physics), but those weird *** vengeance plots are overdone.

As for the Sokovian accords, it seems the creative team/writers were laying it on thick that everything is the fault of the Avengers. What? I mean should they have let the dude escape with the bio weapon? Would allowing the bomb to detonate in the crowded market be better than by the office building? I can see the need for oversite of a group like the Avengers, and I liked Vision talking about how their presence increases response (it happens in humans all the time, the safer we make something, the more we engage in unsafe behavior with it), but constantly seeming to blame the Avengers for the events was dumb. Just say the world is scared about superhumans, wants control, blah blah. Don't force some guilt trip narrative. Without the Avengers in NYC (something they were utterly not responsible for), how much WORSE would it have been? Ignoring that type of thing is ... weird.

But whatever, the action scenes kicked ***, acting was solid (so nice to see ScarJo not phone it in like Portman does all the time). AntMan was solid, Spidey was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than I thought he would be. I want a Vision and/or Wanda movie please. Black Panther I look forward to seeing. Will be interesting to see how (or if) they completely phase out the 1st bunch of actors/heros to make way for phase 2.

Hey, shaddup, Martyrs is premium quality for horror fans. :tongue2: Ditto for the other one- Timecrimes, one of my favorite time travel movies of all time. Have you seen the latter yet BTW? It might be up your alley. It's another one that you can't watch a trailer of first though.

Did you just now watch Victoria or had you already seen it?
I tell you what, the getaway scene had my pulse pounding. I don't know how the movie pulled it off but it had me feeling like I was frantically sitting right there in the minivan with them, beginning at the point when the car stalls..... but it really heightened when Victoria and the rest are freaking out while she's driving away and they're screaming at her to stop here, turn there, back up here, etc. I don't know if you agree but, as far as intensity and realism go, that second half of the movie blows the critically acclaimed Heat [1995] out of the water.

Alright Todd, I watched both Enemy and Victoria.

Enemy: Was very intriguing throughout. Very layered movie with symbolism and metaphors being important to understand. Great acting too. However, by the end of the film, there are two scenes that stick out in my mind as totally inappropriate and they kind of ruin the film for me.

The scene where Sarah Gadon visits Adam (teacher Jake) at college. She immediately is horrified and shocked upon seeing him. Why? That's her husband and she knows it. He doesn't recognize her, because his conscious mind and subconscious mind have split. OK, I could understand her getting freaked out about that, but NOT prior to any conversation. In that scene, a simple, "what's going on?" ice breaker is all that is needed to clarify the situation. Then we could get the back and forth convo about Adam being her husband out of the way, and Adam realizing something is wrong. Instead, the movie plays dumb. It goes a step further with Sarah Gadon playing along in the next scene with her husband, Anthony. "I saw him, he looks just like you..." Again, another conversation should of taken place for her to get clarity as to wtf is happening. Instead, Gadon's character plays into all, to keep the viewer in suspense, holding the movies ace up her sleeve. Which is terrible writing. And when I look back at the film as a whole, it's very unsatisfying that the viewer is manipulated by a plot whole.

Victoria: Cool movie. I liked the plot overall and as you say, good acting. I wasn't a huge fan of the "one take" direction. I understand extended one take scenes where it's important, but when things are moving quickly, I hate watching the camera man bobble the camera around. I find that **** so incredibly annoying.

I can see where some can find Victoria's unstable camera annoying. For me, for this movie, I actually felt it added to the realism of the movie's events. I read that the "singe take" was great for allowing the actors to stay in character and really develop their character arcs as the movie progressed, and I think that consistency helped the movie flow seamlessly and more authentically. I also thought the single take direction complimented the "real time" element quite well. I gave the move a 9 on IMDb. Had it diverted from the one take element, I would've felt less immersed in the characters' world and their events unfolding, and as a result I likely would've rated the movie a 7. So from the writer/director's perspective, it's probably more important to cater to the audience who loves the movie [exactly as it is, with its one-take element] than to attempt to appease the masses by eliminating the one-take element. Essentially, it's more important to maintain 8's, 9's, and 10's at the expense of some 5's and 6's than it is to omit the single-take element in order to bump up those 5's and 6's to 6's and 7's at the expense of the 8's, 9's, and 10's who now downgrade the movie to 6's, 7's, and 8's. I think it would've lost its critical acclaim had that element been omitted.

IDK, at this stage in the movie, I think they're still trying to keep Adam/Anthony's true identity a secret, which I think is important. Is this is a sci-fi movie with Adam being an identical doppelganger?... or a genetic clone?... or is this a case of split personality? The movie could've gone in any one of those directions with 3 completely different arcs. I really don't see that as being any different than trying to withhold the killer of a mystery movie. If Adam realized something is wrong at that time in the movie, it would've ruined the ensuing series of events and the powerful ending IMO. It's also a bit difficult for Helen[wife]/Anthony to have a follow-up clarity conversation when Anthony is sternly convinced that Adam is a clone/doppelganger.... who has a completely separate life with his own apartment, his own car, and his own job as a teacher. Additionally, I think it's possible that Helen is simply too scared or too freaked out to actually wanna know WTF's going on to the point it's mentally paralyzed her. I've dated a couple girls who did stuff behind my back that I knew about but rather than directly confronting them I threw out hints that I perhaps knew what's going on in order to see how they'd respond.
Here's some great stuff from the film I noticed, figured out, or tried to figure out or theorize on. I'm just gonna run through it all in cased you missed it b/c of how deep the movie is and b/c it's pretty nuts when you see everything reveal itself. I thought the movie was just "good" the first time through, but it takes on a whole new light once you piece it together and see the depths the writer/director actually take this shindig. I know it seems like a TL/DR but it's probably worth it in this case.
    • The director left a note in the movie's soundtrack saying, "Enemy is a oneway trip into the subconscious of a man struggling with issues regarding intimacy".
    • Enemy doesn't unfold in chronological order. You can't re-piece it together in precise order but there are scenes that chronologically fall before or after others, and it f**ks with your head trying to figure out what that order is and how the events unfold b/c of it. When you look into the mind of a split personality individual, it won't be orderly and organized. To that individual it might not seem that way, but to the world we see a chaotic mess. That's how this movie is. I bet you didn't even notice through the first viewing that it's not in chronological order. The writer/director created this film through the lens of the split personality individual, with everything appearing orderly to us but in actuality it's completely disorganized without us realizing it, just as if we're that split personality individual. I think it's brilliant coming up with what they did.... and then pulling it off. Then, as the more you unravel, the more confused you become, just as the split personality individual becomes as his truth opens up to himself.
      • In the classroom, the blackboard behind Adam reads: "not yet deciphered" with an arrow from it pointing to "order".
      • Mary is 6 months prego. The front desk guy at Anthony's job tells Adam that it's been 6 months since he's seen him, and it's at Anthony's job where the key to the party is given out. Is this trying to tell us that the party [opening scene] occurred 6 months prior and is what started everything?... that Anthony's split occurred 6 months ago?... as well as the car crash scene/affair? So if those instances represent the time T, then in T+6 months we have: Alan; Alan/Anthony employed as a teacher; the torn photo in his wallet, and everything else you can piece together.
      • HERE'S A BIG ONE: Earlier in the movie Adam has a picture torn in half of Helen in his wallet. At the end of the movie we see Adam looking at the same photo [unscathed] on a shelf at Anthony's place. He's the other person in the photo obviously. On the shelf next to it is a book titled, "History in Reverse" which may have been intentionally planted.
    • So b/c of the intact photo, we know the car crash/affair scene chronologically occurs at or near beginning, as it's likely just a flashback for Anthony. Either that or he's recreating it in his head in order to kill off Anthony. This is likely the affair Helen referenced when questioning Anthony about the phone call. So this means that everything else in that final scene occurred earlier on as well.
    • At the end of the movie when we see Adam enter Anthony's building, get lost down the hallway walking past Anthony's door, and then sniffing around Anthony's apartment for the first time, making sure to hold one of Helen's high heels for a moment.... this marks the first time that Anthony has come home as Adam, as we see that everything is foreign to him, so it's possible that his split happened shortly before that and perhaps even in our midst.
    • Near the final scene, Helen whispers to Adam, "I want you to stay"... meaning- she wants him, Adam, to stay... b/c this is the version of him she likes best [you know- don't let "Anthony" come back].... but from the untorn picture we know that this moment chronologically happened in the past as well. Immediately before that we see Helen investigatively staring down Adam/Anthony in bed trying to figure out which one is present with her.... and so she decides to take the deciphering a step further by asking him, "Did you have a good day at school?" hoping that "Adam" would answer. Then he awakens the next morning remembering the affair & car accident and potentially the awareness that he's going crazy.
      • Then immediately after that scene, Adam is shown putting on Anthony's suit, finding the mysterious key, and innocently asking Helen "Did you plan on doing something tonight?.... b/c I think I have to go out" because he's curious to see what "Anthony's" mystery key is for. To him it's no big deal- just Adam going out for a harmless evening of discovery. But then in the ensuing moment we see Helen as a massive spider dramatically cowered in the corner to such an otherwise unassuming comment, suggesting that she's already been through this at least once with the "Adam" version of Adam/Anthony and knows what's coming next- that it's gonna morph him into "Anthony" and that this change will incite a split personality. Rinse repeat. Or in the very least she knows it'll lead to him cheating on her again.
      • When Adam first goes to Anthony's apartment, we recognize the doorman as a guy at the sex party with Anthony/Adam from the beginning of the movie. We know from the ensuing scene with Adam gazing at the intact photo that this interaction with the doorman actually occurred earlier in the timeline. The doorman says, "I can't stop thinking about the other night." "Can't get it out of my head. I know I shouldn't talk about this but I'd love to go back". "I heard they changed the lock and sent out new keys but I don't think I'm on the list". We can conclude that this was likely the doorman's first party, so the words "the other night" helps further decipher the order and timeline of events. Was the sex party at the beginning of the movie the one that the doorman spoke of?..... or does that particular party fall after Adam sees Helen as the spider when he's curiously about to find out what his mystery key is for after the doorman's conversation peaked his interest in retrospect?.... and that night Adam sees the blonde in high heels stepping on the female spider which incites his split yet again, and then what we see in the first half of the movie [the present day stuff when we know the picture is torn in half] is the ensuing crap that happens thereafter- Anthony gets a second apartment, a car, and a new job... as Adam.
      • So chronologically speaking, I guess it was Anthony at a sex party one evening and then 2 days later we see Adam trying to take over their mind, only to find a mystery key in his pocket. At the end of the movie we see Helen pregnant in the shower, but we know that this actually occurs in the beginning. Assumedly, a few nights before that, he was at a sex party as Anthony with the doorman. Then in the present day, Helen runs into him [as Adam] at his campus where she discloses she's 6 months prego. She's no bigger than she was in the shower scene so this encounter with Adam couldn't have occurred more than a week later. But in what seems to be the present day, we know Anthony/Adam hasn't visited Anthony's job in 6 months, so I'm still trying to figure out how that fits in.
    • So is the movie a loop then? Adam's first sentences in the movie are: "Control, it's all about control." "How do they do that [exert control]? -They censure any means of individual expression". "And it's IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER THIS, THAT THIS IS A PATTERN THAT REPEATS ITSELF THROUGHOUT HISTORY". In a later class scene, Adam says, "It was Hegel who said that all the world's greatest events happen twice, and then Karl Marx added, 'The first time is a tragedy, and the second time is a farce". If a loop is the case, then the scene with Sarah meeting Adam at school isn't the first time she's seen Adam/Anthony go through this whole split routine followed by returning back to normal. She fell in love with the Adam version of Adam/Anthony, so seeing him again likely instills a bit of hope that things will change, and that her love of him is overpowering enough to allow her to cope with the knowledge that she's married to a whacko. That would explain her reaction, expressions, mannerisms, and just the general way she handled it all. I mean, if she wants the Adam personality back, who seems to be rearing his head up, then why would she want a big back-and-forth convo with Anthony about it and risk alerting the personality that she doesn't wanna be with?

    • Who's the primary psyche? Is Adam the split? Is it Anthony? The authentic real-life people [his mother and wife] know him as the person that Anthony is. Mom's phone calls are to Anthony; "Anthony" is who visits her; it's "Anthony" that she knows doesn't like blueberries [while Adam doesn't]; and it's to Anthony that Helen tells his mother called. We see Anthony put his motorcycle helmet down on the table in front of his wife and she looks at it [Adam doesn't drive a bike]. But we also know that he wants to become an actor and could've changed his name from Adam to his stage name Anthony Claire which confuses things. So perhaps he started out life as Adam [both name and personality], and this is the person Helen falls in love with [as the director suggests], but b/c of his issues with women & intimacy he morphed into what we see now as Anthony, not split as Anthony but just morphed into him, with possible assistance from a sex party that his moonlighting job as a crummy actor gets him invited to. Then as he stretches further from his old self, his personality splits in order to balance everything out... but b/c he now goes by his stage name, Anthony, his split personality adopted his birth name, Adam.
    • So in an ironic turn of events, the split personality here is what his true self should be, and it's "Anthony's" personality that should've been the split. Maybe this is what leads to the perpetual loop b/c the split in this instance owns too much power since he's essentially existed longer than the dominant psyche has. Adam/Anthony can't just kill off Anthony and live his life happily ever after as Adam & Helen; he would have to become Anthony again and then morph that bastard back into the kind, caring individual that Adam is and get some therapy to address his mommy and intimacy issues .... and in the process hope that Anthony-Adam converge into one, thus ending the cycle.

    • You have the spiders... which are obviously a symbolic reference to women, but I think there are 2 different themes to it: one being the ominous spider crawling over the city and all the web type stuff that represent the standard spider symbolism of the female devouring the male, or in this case Anthony's mother crushing his psyche; the second being the vulnerable spider being stepped on in the beginning and then the massive one quivering in the corner at the end. I think these 2 are meant to represent the maternal female form, linking it to Anthony's pregnant wife. Otherwise she would've devoured him or something after sex instead of cowering in the corner.
    • There's a quick glimpse in the beginning of the movie of Helen [Anthony's wife] sitting on Adam's bed in his empty apartment. Figure that one out.
    • Adam's right handed; Anthony's left handed.
    • When Adam goes to the video store, the song playing overhead is "The Cheater" by Bob Kuban & the In Men which is about a man who has no business settling down b/c he cant control his urges to sleep around.
    • The glasses Adam buys are later seen on Anthony's table at home.
    • There's a poster of Attack of the 50 ft woman, which further depicts Anthony's psychological issues with women and intimacy.
    • there's the foreshadowing line with Adam telling Anthony "you're fu**ing crazy".
    • Anthony screams to Helen during their argument, "Who do you think it was, a jealous husband?!", and Helen says, "YEAH"..... because it was a jealous husband. It was Adam, Anthony's jealous split who wants to be with Helen.
    • Anthony's movie roles are oddly submissive in nature to women, hinting at his mommy issues and what helped lead to his split. The first time we see Anthony in a movie [a silly looking bellboy carrying a rich woman's luggage], it's a flashback in Adam's dream that awakens him, prompting him to immediately open his laptop and forward to that scene where he first notices "Anthony".

This where it gets really confusing, as it should, because there should be nothing organized about looking into the mind of a split personality individual.

    • We know the affair/accident happened in the beginning [possibly suggesting that that might be where the scar on his chest came from]. So in the beginning of the movie when we first see Adam sitting at the kitchen of his empty apartment [which happens to be in the present or closer to the end chronologically], we see his eyes close as he pauses in thought and then we hear the doorbell buzz. Does Mary actually walk through the door and proceed to sleep with him?.... or is this all happening in Anthony's split personality head as he closes his eyes and starts to daze off?... or is it directly in Anthony's head while he's living in his own apartment that he got after Helen possibly kicks him out. Remember that Mary was Anthony's mistress. At the end of the movie we see her freak out about the tan line on Anthony's ring finger, an event that actually took place in the past, prior to her ever "sleeping with Adam". Adam is clearly different than Anthony. How could Mary not notice she's with a different guy with a different name, different vehicle, and a different home? She's always leaving right after sex and it's uncomfortable how little Mary and Adam share conversation. It's just sex sex sex. Perhaps Anthony is off in lala land continuing his affair with Mary, who could've died in the car accident for all we know and is the reason why the affair ended. Not to mention, Anthony nearly kills Mary in the car accident after almost pushing her out the door. Is she really gonna want to see him after that, if she is still alive?
    • Then the following day we see Adam experience the same exact routine as the previous day. It's the same exact lecture [only spoken with less authority and strength], the same clothes, what appears to be the same students in the same clothes, and more sex with Mary who's in a similar style of dress or same. I think the only way that happens is if he's living or repeating it in his mind, which I think starts to beat home the theme of his split personality issue being a loop, or repetitive. He says again to his class, "It's important to remember this, that this is a pattern that repeats itself throughout history". This time on the chalkboard behind him there were no notes however. Anthony is an actor, so was the stronger class performance an instance of it being redone in his mind as Anthony would've done it? Was it occurring simultaneously in his mind to Adam's lecture?... or was it Anthony whose lecture was the real one? Remember, we're watching this through the mind of his subconscious, and we know that his mom knows Anthony is a teacher. Later on we see him again in class wearing the same clothes BTW.

    • The scene where Anthony follows/stalks Mary on his bike out of Adam's building. Something's amiss here b/c we can't have Adam physically leaving in his car while Anthony physically sits on his bike watching Adam-Mary and it be real. When Mary walks past Anthony sitting on his bike to her left, she's completely unfazed by him. Then when she crosses the street and looks back, she's looking to see if cars are coming and yet again she doesn't even notice him, like she's looking directly through him for any oncoming traffic. Either Anthony is following Mary in his mind as she leaves Adam [you know- since he, Anthony, is the one she had the affair with previously], or Mary purely lives in Anthony's mind as a manifestation of the high-heeled blonde at the party and these scenes never physically take place after the initial affair. I know- whoa.
    • Remember the high-heeled shoe stepping on the spider at the beginning?.... and the blonde mystery woman wearing it? We later see Anthony follow Mary onto a bus and stare down at her high heels which seems to arouse him..... but that scene is a figment of his imagination as we just went over. When walking down the hotel hallway, Anthony stares at the high-heeled woman walking in front of him. Then we see Adam holding Helen's high heel for a moment. Does the high-heeled model stepping on the spider symbolize the crushing of his wife?.... or Anthony's attempt to mentally free himself from a woman he feels is controlling him via marriage and baby? Is it this instance that incites Anthony's split?

Here's where it gets the craziest. If the stuff through the beginning and middle of the movie are actually the end of the movie, the present day, then what's actually happening with it? Is it all merely occurring in Anthony or Adam's head? Did Adam attending the sex party turn him back into the dickish cheating Anthony version of himself which caused Anthony to split again, so that what we're seeing with Adam in his empty apartment trying to figure out who Anthony is is all just happening inside Anthony's head? I mean, it seems that it's Anthony who works as the teacher; his mother confirmed that much when he visited her. And Helen is there when Adam is supposedly on the phone with Anthony, but only one of them can physically occupy a phone at a time, so whatever Adam was doing at that moment, it was inside Anthony's head.

Even with all this said, I'm still completely missing some s**t. That's why I wanted an extra set of eyes.

Hey peeps. Thanks for keeping this thread going. It's always a good read. My recent views, in no particular order:

Deadpool -- Finally got to see this, and man, did it live up to the hype. I could've watched it again the next day, and I think I'll end up owning it. Ryan Reynolds was born to play this role, and he NAILED it. And Morena Baccarin ... rowwrrr, as per usual. I have to dig for quibbles, and my only one was how cartoonish Colossus looked, but how could he not, really? Just a fantastic flick.

Civil War -- Agree it's more of an Avengers movie than a Captain America movie, save that most of it is from his point of view. Also agree that Iron Man's position is a reaction to his personal overreaches and screw-ups. Also, the airport scene was comic book heaven.

And as overplayed as Spiderman has been in the movies, Tom Holland IS the definitive Spiderman.

5th Wave -- ok if you really like sci-fi and/or have a crush on Chloe Grace Moretz; otherwise, a bit too YAish

SPECTRE -- Good, although the Daniel Craig Bond movies are starting to look more like the general Bond template. Hopefully, the next director will shake things up a bit (again).

I stay home with my 4 and 2 year old daughters, but most of what we watch are kids movies. I feel like its a win when we get to watch Kung Fu Panda or Shrek instead of a princess movie or Barbie

I don't recall any references to Straight Outta Compton, but I saw it a few weeks ago and..... man that was a fabulous movie. For anyone apprehensive about watching it, being a fan of its music genre doesn't seem essential to enjoying the film. It may be a bit nostalgic though if you listened to some of those guys growing up like I did, but the movie easily stands on its own merit regardless.

Here's another highly recommended lesser known flick for you guys in your mid 30's and up: Remember, 2015.
I gave it a 9 on IMDb for offering good enjoyability, originality, and for hitting its mark as far as creating the film about as well as it could possibly be done goes. Solid characters, solid acting, solid original story, and fairly well paced. Has a bit of a 'Memento' feel, but different enough to not feel borrowed or stolen.

Good movie for the first 80 minutes..... and then the memorable final 10 minutes make it great. Outstanding ending.
It's another film you can't watch the preview of.
