I think of the many 70's players that went on to be good businessmen and are well mentally strong today. Griese, Csonka, Warfield, Scott, Anderson etc etc.... Why didn't the concussion thing affect them? I don't recall hearing of any of that group or players from the 70's having issues. Did I miss something?
Like anything else, some people are more effected than others. One guy can take a ton of blows to the head and come out of the other end ok, another gets hit in the wrong spot just once, and it bothers him for the rest of his life. There are plenty of players from that era involved in the suits against the league. Some likely have legitimate heath issues from playing football, and others are probably tagging along hoping for a payday. Either way, I've known about concussions since I was a kid in the 80s and got my first couple, and learned how scary that can be. I find it so hard to believe that these guys had absolutely no idea that taking repeated hits the the head would pose no long term risk. Its simple common sense.
so why were the Dolphins people not affected? while I agree that not all people have the same results, is there some other factor that is being missed?
I think that its very likely that some Dolphins players were affected. Perhaps not just the ones that are always in the public eye.
That might be true, but you would certainly think we would hear about it now, with all the talk of concussions currently in the news. I'm not talking about getting bell wrong, but the long term after affects.
Concussions certainly aren't good for the brain. That said, it's also obvious at this point that "I played football and got brain damage" is a convenient excuse for a lot of guys who can't manage their finances or cope with the transition from playing football to living like the rest of us.
