    This story got me thinking.

I think it showcases how out of touch ESPN's "team" writers are from the actual franchises and fanbases they cover, but maybe I'm wrong..

If you asked me who the biggest rival of the Dolphins was, then I would say the majority would say the New York Jets. Personally, it's the Buffalo Bills for me. They ruined so many solid Dolphins teams in the early 90s.

What would you say? Is it the Patriots?

Is it someone else outside the AFC East? If so, then let it be known.

Nah. For me it's the Jets. Yes Buffalo rained on our parade quite a bit in the 90's, but with the Jets you never know. I've said it for over 30 years now, when the Jets and Dolphins play, throw out the records and who is good or bad that year, it is going to be a dog fight.

It has to be the Jets. I have so much animosity toward that team compared to the Bills or the Pats.

I feel like it's the Patriots. They lead the division and are the clear target. The Jets are a team I hope and expect to beat every time we play them. It doesn't happen, but the bottom line is that my sights for the Dolphins are set much higher (ironically) than the Jets.

The Jets and bills both. Like you said, buffalo ruined so many of our good seasons in the 90s, but the Jets have messed us up for decades too.

With all due respect, I would have to say I hate each and every one of them the same. For many different reasons. The jets are well the jets loud braggadocious and never as good as they pretend to be. The Bills I hated all throughout the Jim Kelly years partly cause they were good when I was young and prevented us from getting to the championships, Now I hate them cause Blowhard brothers are up there once again acting like they have accomplished something, New England I hate because of all the cheating, Brady while good to me isn't a world beater he's in a good system, but they act like he would make Tampa bay champs (Plus I cant admire any white man who wears a bowtie). I have other reasons but I mostly hate them all because they are all my rivals, and they have all been better than us over the last 10 years or so give or take a season here and there.

For me it's always the Jets, I just hate them way more than I hate the other two (and I hate them too!).

We've actually had a decent amount of success against New England, I would bet that most Pats fans would say the Jets are their biggest division rival but it should be us.

Jets hands down simply because of their loud mouthed knuckle dragging neanderthal fans.
Growing up in S. FL. you have to deal with them constantly.

How are sewer pipes and NY Jet fans similar?

Both have mouths that are always open and both always have a steady flow of crap coming out of them.

The question was who is the biggest rival so I went with the Fluffy ho' Jills. If it was which team I hate with a burning passion than of course it would be the yets.

The jills were better than us when we were good and while yets games just get crazy the jills seem to give us the most painful beat downs and the toughest division games.

Just as I suspected. Most Dolphins would say the biggest rivalry was with the Jets. Even with the responses in thread and no vote, the Bills were a distant 2nd.

    James Walker/ESPN has no clue.

I don't know that it's Walker. ESPN's agenda is that the Jets are the Patriots' rivals. And so, if they determine that each team gets one rival, they're of course going to pair up the Fins and Bills. For many years, we and they butted heads for the division and the other two were afterthoughts, so its not unreasonable regardless.

I would bet you that ESPN also says that the Browns are the Bengals rivals, instead of the Steelers. They probably pair up the Eagles and Giants, because they "need" to keep the Cowboys and Washington together. The Packers and Bears are tied at the hip, so the Vikings and Lions are paired off. In the AFC West, you could make a case for any matching of the 4 clubs, but I bet they have the Broncos and Raiders.

I linked the article, so you can see.

They list the Bengals rivals as the Steelers.
They list the Cowboys rivals (from a fans perspective) as the Redskins.
They list the Giants rivals (at this point) as the Cowboys.
They list the Eagles rivals as the Cowboys too.
They list the Lions rivals as the Packers.
They list the Packers rivals as the Vikings.
They list the Vikings rivals as the Packers.

Basically, ESPN gave a two pronged answer - who has won the division or who is the most popular team. Boom that's your rival.

I'm not upset at the article at all. I just wanted to sample the fan base here and see if I was right, or ESPN was. From the fan's perspective (very small sample size), the fans would indicate the Jets as our rival.

I don't really get the Jets as biggest rivals thing. Sure, I hate them and their fans are annoying, but with the exception of maybe 2-3 years, they have not been the team we were fighting for the division or playing in big games. I take much, much more satisfaction from beating the Pats than from beating the Jets and I'm surprised if most Dolphin fans disagree. To me, it has clearly been the Pats since 2001 and was the Bills for most of the 80s/90s.

Like everything on this board......its all in how a person defines something.

You define biggest rivalry as the team that wins your division the most other than your favorite team while others define biggest rivalry as the team they hate most no matter how good or bad either team is.

I agree that it has a lot more meaning when you're fighting for the playoffs, and we obviously haven't done that much lately. But looking back at recent history, we've played a lot of our most important games vs the Jets.

2014: Week 17, we came into the game 8-7, and alive for the final WC spot. We lost at home to the Jets.

2013: Week 17, we came into the game 8-7, and would have made the playoffs with a win. We lost at home to the Jets.

2010: We actually beat the Jets in an important Week 14 game to get to 7-6. Setting us up for home games vs the Bills (4-12) & Lions (6-10) that would have put us in position where the Week 17 game vs New England would be for a playoff spot, and at 13-2 at that point, NE would have likely rested players. But, the Fins choked and lost both when they should have been easy wins.

2008: Came into the Week 17 game needing a win at NYJ to win the division and get into the playoffs, and won in very memorable fashion for the team's only playoff appearance since 2001.
    .
2006: In a season where the Fins ended up 6-10, we lost two games by a FG to the Jets. Winning either one would have at least knocked them out of the playoffs.

2003: In what would prove to be the beginning of the end of the good times, the Fins beat the Jets in Week 17 to get to 10 wins, but the last truly good Miami team had already been knocked out of the playoffs, and became at the time, just the second 10 win team to miss the playoffs since they expanded in 1990. Still, it felt good to watch them stick it to the Jets that day and play really well. Little did we know what was to come.

2002: Came into Week 10 at 5-4 and in first place, but lost to the then 4-5 Jets, leaving us tied with both them and New England at 5-5. The season ended with all three tied at 9-7, and the Jets won on tiebreakers, leaving Miami out of the playoffs for the first time since 1996.

Obviously, you could go through and pick out games that were important vs other teams too, but my point is simply that the argument for the Jets the last 15 years or so is a strong one.

When we talk about who the Dolphins biggest rival is, that is relative to the Dolphins, not the fans, though they do almost always go hand in hand.

The Dolphins biggest rival has been the Jets for a long time, these two teams do not like each other, as has been evidenced many, many times in the past by players and coaches.

There is an enmity between the two clubs that is deeper than it is for the Bills or Pats, we have been rivals for the AFC east crown with the Bills, Pats and Colts at different times, but there is a rivalry with the Jets that supersedes any positioning, and even during those times, Jets games were circled, because of the intense rivalry that exists between the two teams.

    Many big memorable, infamous moments have transpired between the two teams, Unlucky 13 pointed out quite a few, but there are others that sink deeper;

like when Joe Klecko ended Dwight Stevenson's career with a dirty hit, or when Marino pulled out the fake spike, which Jets fans thought was dirty pool, or when a 10 and 1 Jets team got demolished by the Dolphins, both on the scoreboard and more importantly by injury, which ruined their season, and they didn't win another game, or the game where Marino threw for 450 yds and 6 TDs only to lose in OT to a 40 yd bomb to Wesley Walker.

You can go back and look at times where either the Bills, Pats or Colts were not substantive rivals, but not the Jets, and that is why they are the biggest rivals.

It is and will always be the Jets for me. But ironically we owe the Jets a good deal of gratitude. Had they not beaten the Colts in the Super Bowl, we may not have been able to sign Shula.

    Well said. Very subjective.
Again, just thought if ESPN is taking the view of the fan's and the rivalry, it seems most believe the Jets to be our most hated/biggest rival.

To be fair, if you're highlighting the games we needed to win in 2014 and 2013, then you should highlight the importance of a Week 16 loss to Buffalo - using that same logic. Same can be said for the tough losses to Buffalo down the stretch in 2013, etc.

But, I don't think it's worth arguing who someone feels is the biggest rival. If you think it's the Jets, that's valid and real. I wanted to see survey the mass and get a sample for who most thought the biggest rival was, and as I suspected, it was the Jets. Although, for me personally, it is the Bills.

Absolutely you could. Thats why I ended my post the way that I did. When you play three teams twice a year, there will be ample opprotunities to have meaningful games against each of them. And what's meaningful to an individual team and its fanbase may be completely meaningless and forgotten by the rest of the NFL, but that doesn't make it less important to those who care most.

We're long past the early 90s.. It's not the bills... Whom have the longest playoff drought, etc. We've actually been one of the toughest matches for the patriots ever since their dynasty started.....

It's far and away the Jets, to anyone in-tune to the Dolphins..... and S.Fl sports talk. The jets are the sibling we've shared a room with in recent history. We've been the middle children fighting for legway most of the time while buffalo sucks its binky.

Not meant to hijack the thread, but isn't James Walker the worst? Rarely anything other than his "stories from around the web" So he's not really writing anything. And when he does write it seems to be these fluff pieces that offer no real insight to anything.

I can see why the Steelers fans were happy to be rid of him.

He's far and away better than Omar, and I'd say he's better than Armando as well. Not to say that Walker is a good beat writer, but compared to the other guys we have covering the team, by being mediocre and neutral, he moves close to the top.
