What are your thoughts on our first preseason games guys? Any infomation about the game would be greatly appreciated. I am South Carolina and I cant watch the game on NFL Network because Time Warner does not carry NFL Network.

Thanks for for the infomation and thoughts about the game.

P.S. Did any body see John Dunlap in the games he is number 17.

I'll watch tomorrow so then I will have a better idea but from the sound of it the backup defense was awful and couldn't get Tampa off the field.

Coverage units were good until they were increasingly populated by scrubbs as the game went along. Downright sucked by the 4th quarter

LOT of underneath stuff available for the Bucs - Especially after the "starters" started being pulled out. - Porter didn't play, Holliday didn't play, Ferguson played 2 series (2 three and outs for bucs).

Beck was ok. Nothing great, nothing bad. [-Edit - did have a ball knocked loose, but he fell on it for a 3 yard loss]

Too many penalties - one on Hagan, false start on Long (I think) - pile of penalties on other folks especially as scrubs started filling up the roster.

    RopeWeed outstanding.

Ronnie got, maybe, 4 yards on 3 carries then out of the game.

Carpenter hit a 49 yarder and a shorter one (can't remember distance).

Henne made some big $ throws - hit a 21 yarder on 3rd & 18. So far, so good. Actually, pretty impressed, but by that time, I think Tampa had begun filling in with 2d / 3d team mix too.

McCown came in late with scrubs. Didn't do much, didn't have much to work with.

[Edit - Fields did decent on punts]
[Edit - Foster had one pretty big return at the end against TB scrubs]

I thought we were okay bro...

After tonight... its clear... that our D needs work. we need to be able to stop those short passes. Even if it was our 2nd and 3rd stringers out there. The starting D seemed to be able to hold their own.

Our starting O-line... it seems like they played very well. Ronnie got some action to hopefully get him on track again, Ricky did very well also. Definately can't complain about that.

Our Qb's, beck sounded like he did okay, aside from the fumble. Henne seemed to be very impressive showing off his arm, his poise, and his toughness. McCown didnt do much, not that he had much to work with though near the end when he finally got in there with the 3rd and probably 4th stringers...

What id like to see next week...

Henne have some time with the first team. Starting the game. If he was as impressive as the announcers though with the 2nd stringers, Id love to see him with the first... against a first team D.

More ronnie brown. Get him back in there, let him take some hits and get his confidence up even more.

Nothing really to note aside from what's been said about Ricky Williams and Chad Henne (talk about a QB having some ZIP!), along with the starting defense. I just want to add something: Jason Allen should be a team captain, man. I don't know who the new captains are, but that guy is a LEADER out there on the football field. He always finds himself around the ball, too. I'm excited to see what he can do with a full season at his correct position, free safety.

    Disappointments:

    1. Ernest Wilford looks like a bump on the log out there. I was surprised to see him check in after not only Ginn & Hagan, but Kircus and Camarillo as well. However, it's obvious as to why he hasn't impressed the coaching staff. I couldn't tell if Henne's third down lob was a drop, but he certainly had an opportunity to catch the football. With Derek Hagan's size, I'd consider doing something with Wilford if Terry Glenn is signed. I'm not one to overreact based on the first preseason game, but apparently he's been crap in camp as well.

    2. Josh McCown sucks. "McClown" is what should be printed on the back of his jersey.

    3. Second and third team defensive units were absolutely horrendous. Let's hope the starters have a healthy season. Otherwise, we may be in for some trouble.

Boring game, our two horses were left on the sidelines for the most part, our Defense ran only vanillia stuff, and our Qb rotation was flat.

Our tackling needs improvement, and I've yet to read about Big Jake Long and Don Thomaso's contributions, did they stink or what?

I do think the message that came over loud and clear is our first team Oline and second team Oline has a tremendous gulf between them, our back up Olinemen suck, there is no sugar coating for it.

I'll associate myself with what these guys said. Brandon gave a good review.

Did anyone single out Merling? That kid is going to be a hell of a ball player. I bet he gets six sacks this year, if he stays healthy.

Henne's arm jumps out at you. He fires the ball. I hope he starts next week.

Yeah, he impressed me quite a bit. He's a lot bigger than I thought he was, and he looks like he'll be solid in run support which he was praised for at Clemson. Didn't know he could get to the QB as well as he showed, though. I think he got in there 2-3 times.

Merling and Langford got a lot of pressure on the QB.
    And Henne was impressive.

We need some quality Defensive depth though, and Jake Long needs a good backup, the scrub that replaced him was awful.

Nice. For some reason I didn't think of that. Who do you think we replace Carey with then. I hope its not Ndukwe... sure LT and RT are different, but after what I saw tonight, I wouldnt want him over there either.

    QB:

John Beck: Did surprisingly good, considering the negative press he's been getting. But like one poster pointed out, not great, not bad.

Chad Henne: I liked what I saw from this young guy. Has a cannon and some zip to it. Needs to work on the short stuff, but part of what we saw was WRs fault.

Josh McCown: Yea, he was working with scrubs, but he looked god-awful. Im actually glad he wont be starting for us.

    RBs:

Ronnie Brown: Only had a few carries. Nothing happened.

Ricky Williams: This guy has not lost a step. Unbelievable. If he gets enough carries this year, and he will, hes going to be special.

Patrick Cobbs: Has some "umph" to his running, but missing the initial burst.

Jaren Parmalee: Kid has the tools to be a future 3rd down back.

    Lex Hilliard: Nothing stands out.

    WRs:
As a group, this unit was disappointing overall.

Wilford kept dropping easy passes, a problem stemming from camp.

Ginn had a nice play, but didnt play much, as expected.

Kircus had a few nice catches. Kinda like a Bill Shreoder type.

Camarillo kept pissing me off with the boneheaded penalties on offense and special teams.

Hagan seemed to catch the ball at given opportunities. So far, hes the #2 guy, as Wilford has been a disappointment.

Devone Bess is going to be a good WR.

TE: Fasano had a nice catch, but no one else stood out.

OL: Jake Long and the starting OL did well in the opening series, I was pleasantly surprised. The pass protection has improved.

DL: The pressure was a little late with the top two units, but it looks like the coaching staff has run defense zeroed in. FINALLY. Guys that stood out: Ferguson, R.Wright, Langford.

LBs: Poor pass defense all the way through. Covering the intermediate passing zones is the job of LBs in the 3-4. They didnt do their jobs tonight.

CBs: Will Allen and Andre Goodman started, both did decent but again, poor job in protecting short and intermediate passes. Same with Travis Daniels.

S: Jason Allen looked fired up, and played well. Yeremiah Bell looked a little rusty. Renaldo Hill looked lost as did Keith Davis.

K: Dan Carpenter has a leg.

P: Brandon Fields was, well, Brandon Fields.

Hey guys. I dont post much but I do read the site daily.

I think alot of the general trends of the game have already been covered in the Gameday Thread, so i'll go into a few observations both positive and negative of some specific players.

    Matt Roth

He looked lost out there at SLB. When he released into space he looked very sluggish turning his hips in pursuit. When he was rushing off the edge he didn't have much burst to turn the corner and once the tackle got his hands on him it was over. I saw him engage a tackle and give up atleast twice, which isn't good for a "high motor" guy.

Overall he looks just too built for his frame to stand up. He has a hard problem shedding with his short arms and doesn't have the kind of explosiveness to overcome that.

I'm still going to reserve judgement on him as a LDE because we haven't seen him play there yet, but the fact that Langford is starting there points to something.

    Kendall Langford

Looked real good on the first two series. He was able to stack his man and shed against the run and provide some pressure.

I believe the LDE position is his to lose, as I don't see Roth beating him outright for the starting job.

    Davone Bess

Had a good game for the amount of time he was on the field. He didn't show breakaway speed or alot of seperation, but fought for the ball and gave alot of effort.

I didn't see anything special in his return skills but the blocking wasn't the best.

I think he makes the team and eventually works his way to the slot receiver.

    Ernest Willford

Drops and inconsistancy are what we're going to hear about him this season. We gave him a $6 Million signing bonus so he's gonna be here for atleast 2 seasons. Hopefully he can pull away to become our #2 WR, otherwise it goes to whoever has less drops between him and Hagan.

    Ricky Williams

Looked like Ricky circa 2002 on the broken run. Lets just hope our oline can block better so he's breaking those tackles 10 yards down field instead of in his backfield.

    Chad Henne

Most confident QB out of the bunch. Didn't appear to play scared at all. I'm not giving up on Beck but it is 1-0 Henne at this point.

    Akin Ayodele

Looked real good in coverage and pursuit out there. Most people write him off as being "thrown in" on the trade with Dallas that brought Him and Fasano, but the coaching staff knew what they were getting when they brought him over. He will be a solid contributor on our defense.

    Summary

Most other players i'm going to wait to see them some more before commenting on them but those players gave the biggest impressions to me from this game.

Overall though Sparano has alot of work ahead of him. Special Teams, backup Oline, Depth Front 7 all need alot of work. Meanwhile he is trying to avoid the media circus that is going to try to start a QB Controversy.

The one thing I do think we're set on is our coach. Sparano has showed me alot of leadership and he commands respect.

The comment that was made during the broadcast about how Tony owed his Head Coaching job to Bill was a big slap in the face to Tony. If it wasn't for Bill, Tony would be in Baltimore right now and we might still be stuck with Cameron.

Let me know what you think about my opinions.

They aren't on the roster yet. It's pretty clear from the scrubs at depth beyond that 4th rounder they spent on Murphy any other backups are coming from the waiver wire. There's far better guys fighting for their lives on other squads right now.

That's a good post bro. With thoughts like these and more posts like these you'll quickly become a favorite around here. If you enjoy the content around here you should check some of the threads out in the club level as well. Some high quality reading in there!

Anyways, I enjoyed reading your assessment of tonights game. I agree with you on Sparano. I believe we have the right guy in here for the job right now. I didnt see anything crazy with game management or play calling(althought im not sure if he's calling the plays or if the OC is... i do believe its Henning though)

Also, nice to hear some info on Matt Roth. I agree. I think the fact were trying him out at LB, and starting both Langford and Merling isnt teh greatest of signs for Mr. Roth.

To me, Langford and Merling are going to be names mentioned around here for a long time.

I agree, I think Bess makes the team. Its hard to part with a guy like him. Good receiver, great hands, and a special teams guy too.

As for Wilford... he really needs to step it up. Something is definitely wrong with his game right now and for our sake, he better find it soon.

Again, great post! thanks for sharing your thoughts and opinions! :hi5:

What we saw tonight, was a good ol fashioned beatdown. Tampa has the QBs to be able to stretch the field on any play, then check it down when needed. OUr defense played like total garbage. Sparano is gonna hear it from the media after a pathetic loss like this. There appeared to be no gameplan whatsoever on either side of the ball. If he thinks he can coach like this and get away with it, think again. This is the preseason. We need to win!!! Think of it this way. The elite teams can win whenever they want, so the preseason doesnt matter to them. But we arent elite, we need to win now, while the other teams arent trying as hard. We may not get a chance to beat them after September rolls around. Sparano just doesnt get it. Every win is prescious!!!!!!

Am I crazy? No. I just like to make your head hurt.

Great post. Excellent objective analysis. I share your concerns about Wilford. I'm thinking a lack of motivation may be the root of his troubles. Whatever it is though, I hope its cleared up soon. And about Sparano, I agree that Tony deserves more respect. It will be difficult for him to separate himself from Parcells, in terms of claiming his own right to his success. The best thing is that he doesn't seem to be concerned with any of that.

I'll be expecting to read more from you soon.

It sounded to me like they did pretty well over all until the 4th. The preseason is all about evaluating the players, not about wins. Sparano knows this, and Parcells knows this.
I'm not worried about a win until game 1.

while i was only able listen to it and didn't catch every second. i felt i was listening to a game from last yr. we had flashes of greatness but couldn't overcome our mistakes(mostly penalties) and we really didn't go down feild unless of course your name is pennington and the 20 yrd bullet to kircus from henne is deep down feild..none of our qb's drove us down for 6 and our recievers dropped atleast 6-9 balls(i'm including the t.e's).

our defense while had some nice plays as another poser stated we couldn't get off on third down even allowing a 4th and 13 to be completed. it seemed we played our backers a little too soft and never really adjusted to all the underneath short passing patterns. and again(keep in mind it's only the first preseason game) we lack any real depth all over the field.

our st really blew chunks a little down the road in the game which really dissapointed me after all the guys we brought in to fix that problem.

but bottom line if we can't fix the 1-3 penalties a drive or score touchdowns even against preseason 2nd and 3rd stringers we are in for a long year. the third preseason should be a much better gauge of where we are due to our starters (whom i feel is a pretty solid group)playing most of the game.

All in all, my impressions were that we need help badly on WR. We didn't get pressure on the QB, but since a bunch of our starters on DL and LB weren't playing, I won't take too much from that. Our starting O line played okay, our backups suck on ice. Ronnie was tentative and didn't show much, Ricky looks like the old Ricky, as long as he stays healthy and out of trouble. Henne impressed me, Beck looked like a slightly more seasoned version of last year's Beck, McCown showed why he's never done anything.
Carpenter is a keeper and Fields is a weapon.

Well, I for one am not one that believes that PS games mean anything. And I most certainly know that the score means squat. That being said, I saw our defense playing something of a bland vanilla scheme. Or so it looked. There were at times some changes, but nothing really. However I did see some things that made me feel like we would play "off" and I wasn't sure why. I'd mostly think it was so the coach can see if the players can pick up and catch up.

I have the game on DVD already, so if anyone wants it let me know.

Yes the defensive plays were very vanilla i.e 3 down lineman and rush the two outside linebackers on nearly every play and go 4 down linemen on 3rd down.

The defense wasn't bad until the backups started coming into the game. I thought they were good and Jason Ferguson is definitely going to be very important to how successful the defense will be this year. I think some may be forgetting Holliday and Porter didn't play either.

BTW Roth is completely out of place at outside linebacker.

Ricky was running great. I liked Jalen running the ball late. Jake was great. I liked the new offensive line. They will only get better, and gel. I saw Merling getting double teamed already.

I would have like to see Beck do better. I am pulling for him, but he needs to pick his game up. Henne looked good, with some good zip on the ball. I liked the starting defense. I also liked the hit that Grigsby gave out. I enjoyed seeing Bell back out on the field. I hope he can stay healthy.

5 Other things I noticed that havent been mentioned:

    1. Jayson Foster sucked as a return man. Muffed one punt and the rest of the time he prob avgd about 5 yards. Really saw nothing from him.

    2. Mauia and Grigsby both made nice short grabs and turned them into 8-9 yard gains. I was pleasantly suprised with how fluid they both looked making the catch and beginning to break it down the field.

    3. Nate Jones hurt himself during a kick-off I believe. I think they said he walked off under his own power but an update is worth keeping an ear out for.

    4. Henne has the best pocket presence of the group imo. He seemed like he had the best understanding of how much time he had and when the rush was on him. I was happy to see him bolt out of the pocket when he was about to get cracked from behind.

He also already has the concept of throwing the ball away down pat. I really didnt see him try to force anything that wasnt there. Glad to see we have a QB who understands that getting rid of the ball and not getting drilled/causing a turnover is a high priority.

I agree with everyone else who said he looked the best out there today. He plays with confidence and makes quick and smart decisions so far. I hope he doesn't lose that swagger when he goes up against a 1st team defense.

    5. We have the crappier McCown brother, like it matters. This guy was god-awful playing against a defense that you could find in a highschool parking lot. If Beck gets cut to make room for Pennington instead of McCown, I may go on a small killing spree.

Edit: We already knew about 5, but I wanted to give you guys a heads up on the killing spree.

I agree on Sparano. Good coach. Once he gets this turned around, we appear set for the next decade or so. Thats a good feeling.

I also agree big time on Roth. Big time underachiever, and you cannot be that when others were brought in to take your job. They already had him change positions, and he cannot play OLB; not quick enough. I'd say he'll be lucky to hang on, based on that performance.

Langford is going to be a stud. He and Merling both.

As for Bess, I didn't notice anything about him that stood out (other than his hair). I've heard alot about him but I am still waiting. Now, it was only one game, so lets see. And I don't think we'll ever see break away speed from Davone. Thats not his game.

My worst was Tobor at LB. He was horrible. I really think he doesn't like contact.
My biggest surprise was Henne. I was trying not to like him and support Beck, but the kid seems pretty good. I'm starting to warm on him.
My biggest dissapointment was all the WR's. Dropping good balls.

Henne was the steal of our draft. He solidified why Parcells and Co. spent the time and effort scouting him. He shined like a lighthouse on a dark night at sea.

We made modest improvements overall, and played smart ball, not near as many penalties as I expected from a young team. We will continue to add to the roster as the cuts continue and I expect us to be ugly until around Week 6 to 8 until we finally gel. We have tilled the land and the seeds are planted. We will have to be patient before we can enjoy the fruits of our labor.

I don't understand this way of thinking. Why not judge and criticize ALL of our players on how they preform. Not "what they can do", not "what they could have done" but "what they DO".
