If/when everyone is healthy and on full rest he won't be. He would be the 6th inning guy.

Something like that is the only way Schwarber gets moved, IMO. Lots of talk around that topic since Sale has been rumored to be on the block. I think the Cubs would move Kyle for an ace who was under contract for a few years, and I would be in favor of it, but otherwise, even though he's a below average LF who likely won't catch again after his injury, he's likely to be a .300/.400 guy with 40 HR power soon, and he's under cheap control for years to come. Those are hard to find these days.

    Interesting stat I just read:

Cubs are 55-1 going into the 9th with a lead, 53-1 going into the 8th and 53-5 into the 7th.

Doesn't seem like the back end of the pen is an issue. Surprised Theo would trade some high level prospects for ~3 months of Chapman but I guess not winning a WS in 108 years will do that.

It goes deeper than that, unfortunately. I don't have the numbers in front of me, but aside from situations where they technically blew a save, the pen outside of Rondon and Strop has been completely unreliable in pressure situations. Time after time, given a chance to get through an inning or two in a close game, they've blown up and either taken the loss themselves, or put the game out of reach, turning a one run defecit into a 3+ one. Before the break, the pen took the loss in 3/4 games, for example. They've now removed most of those trouble players from the roster, one way or another, and replaced them with Chapman, Montgomery, and Joe Nathan, who will likely move into some sort of "early pressure" role as needed.

All that being said, the Cubs have still been very good at home, its been the road that's killed them. The last few weeks before the break, they went 2-12 on the road against anyone not named the Reds. Starting today, they play 20/23 in Chicago, including two on the South Side. Its a good opprotunity to get back to where they were.

Supposedly he wanted cleveland to decline his 5.25m option for next year so he could hit FA

People yesterday were saying it makes no sense for the braves to acquire matt kemp... Umm, what of acquiring good players to rebuild for the future makes no sense? So the Braves are suppose to just suck and let everyone improve?

I can't even bring myself to watch. Upset that they basically decided to throw the game today on the off chance he actually could pitch well.

Quite happy with the Yankees haul so far ;)

I knew Miller and Chapman would get good returns but Torres and Frazier? Nice!

I know the feeling. For a few years, the best part of the Cubs season was when they traded away players for prospects.

Say what you want about Cashman and the FO when it comes to signing FAs and drafting players but he/they have do a pretty damn good job making trades. I've been trying to think of the last trade they made that blew up in their face (i.e. traded away a player that ended up hurting them in the long term).

I've always said Cashman should be an assistant GM to work the trades.. The GM would handle the draft... Needless to say Cashmans drafts have been beyond bad.

Mets are considered front runners for Jay Bruce according to Ken Rosenthal. Yes please. As long as it doesn't cost Nimmo or Conforto I'm ok.

Well to be fair to Cashman, the drafts after the first few rounds are done by the Scouting Director and Scouting Department. You could blame Cashman for hiring those guys but it's hard to pin any GM on bad picks after the first 2 or 3 rounds. But it comes with the job and they get blamed fair or not.

But yeah the Yankees drafts haven't been good in a long time.

Well after these deals they have one of the better farm systems in the game with Frazier, Torres, Mateo, Judge, etc. Just imo, they're gearing up for 2018 when Harper, Machado, Fernandez etc are FA.

Wouldn't shock me if they land two of those free agents. I don't think Jose is a Marlin next season after the All Star break. Loria will wait till after the break to stab us in the chest with a rusty machete. Besides, we are hosting the game so we need Jose there to represent us.

The Cubs cut him today. At least they came back to win in extras last night, and got 9 shutout innings from their bullpen! Hopefully tonight's starter Kyle Hendricks can give them some rest and go deep into the game.

Hope this goes through. I was actually in a fantasy football league with Jay Bruce last season. He's a really good dude and he's been hitting very well this year. Good deal for both sides if it goes through.

Reds supposedly trading Cozart to the Mariners as well.

Looking forward to the 6 games vs the Reds and 11 vs the Brewers the Cubs play the rest of the way, especially after both teams sell off . Good luck into the future though, Ronin.

Thanks. It's very weird as the company I work for has a connection to the St. Louis Cardinals. My company's CEO is the son of Bill DeWitt, the owner of the Cards. Bill DeWitt has an office on the top floor our building and lives in Cincinnati. I've seen him around a few times as he's semi-retired in most of his business ventures outside of owning the Cards. Probably the coolest thing was last December stumbling upon him in the conference room trying to re-sign Jason Heyward. Obviously that didn't work, but it was still cool to hear those negotiations.

Anyways, his son, my company's CEO, is pretty tight with a lot of the Cards' players as they travel out there frequently. They're also friendly with Walt Jocketty, the Reds former GM and Senior VP, as he was with the Cardinals when Bill DeWitt first got the team. Every now and again, our CEO will drop some nuggets he hears as he all knows we're Reds fans. For two years in a row now he's bought into Adam Wainwright's charity fantasy football league and has had me manage his team. It's pretty cool as there's usually 5-10 Major League Teams that each buy into their own separate league under Wainwright's charity and play with people across the country. I was fortunate enough to get to manage our CEO's team the past two years and have played against Bruce, Cozart, Devin Mesoraco and several others who have all left the Reds since lol.

Our CEO told me last week he knew of the Reds trying to move 3-4 players. Bruce and Cozart have been widely rumored and there's been some talk of Brandon Phillips, unlikely with his no-trade clause, and there's been some unfounded rumors about Anthony DeSclafani.

Reds won't be a factor in the NL Central until 2018 at the earliest. It's too bad as Jocketty pushed for this rebuild in 2014 but was overruled by ownership. Other than Votto (contract) most of the Reds assets could've already been moved. Oh well, such is the life of a small-market team.

Hey the Giants just traded for Matt Moore!

But its not the NY Giants or the Fins Matt Moore . Its the other who's been a pitcher for the Rays thats always cluttering up the Fins Bleacher Report thread. The NL is comically top heavy this year.

Good moves for the Rangers, though I was hoping to see Gallo get traded over Brinson. Big concern is the starting rotation though. Aside from Hamels you have recovering Yu Darvish, inconsistent Martin Perez and ..? I was really hoping they would make a deal for Archer, Sale or Quintana.

Should be a good race for all of the Wild Cards in both leagues, with just about every contender making moves lately. Four really strong teams who aren't in first place in each league, plus a few others hanging on.
