Nice enough video, but 2nd and 3rd string QBs always look good against the 2s and 3s on D with no pressure and 3+ ticks on the clock.

Not sure what our beat writers are seeing either...

@OmarKelly how did the rookie, Doughty, look today?

    Armando Salguero ‏@ArmandoSalguero
Andre Branch just knocked down a Brandon Doughty pass. Quarterbacks can't even get a pass off.

Doughty has made his share of nice throws in the early part of training camp, but he declared himself less than thrilled with his performance so far this summer.

“I’m OK,” he said. “I’d give my performance probably about a C. I gotta get better. I gotta be better, I gotta be quicker, I gotta be faster with my reads, faster with my feet, faster in everything I do. It’s a long process. Gotta enjoy the process, that’s what I’m doing right now.”

    Per Armando...
Still, Doughty should get his chance to show if he's more than PS material with the Pre-season games looming... first game is week from this Friday against the Giants on the 12th.

What is funny about this quote is, and I'm not picking on you, but you're citing Armando as a source for evaluating Doughty's talent, and the thing you are citing was (as I recall) where Armando claimed via his evaluation abilities that Logan Thomas was the guy fighting to be the third man on the roster, is ahead of Doughty and Dysert, and the latter two look like practice squad material...and literally within minutes of Armando having written that Logan Thomas was cut. Somehow Armando had not caught the writing on the wall that I and others had seen without having seen a single practice.

In other words Armando can say "practice squad material" all he wants, I don't trust his evaluation.

Understood and I've no argument with you on any of our beat writers lacking ability to evaluate talent or be objective. At the same time though, will Doughty actually make the roster this season?

Doughty hits Thomas short and then misses near the sideline. He really doesn't have a lot of zip on his throws.

I'm about 80% certain he will but that percentage changes if he stinks in preseason because at some point it's less about Miami's evaluation of Doughty and more about the confidence level that they can sneak him past waivers to get him to the practice squad. His ties to the area and this being the team he grew up a fan of works against him.

Maybe I should say I'm 80% certain they're not just going to cut ties with him this year. But if they have an opportunity to sneak him onto the practice squad while saving the roster spot for someone else I think they could do that.

That's the first I've heard anyone speak negatively about Doughty thus far, unless you count Sung mentioning that he doesn't have the same zip on his passes as the other QBs. It's interesting to see Himmelrich say that, but noteworthy that he's been negative on Doughty for a while since well before camp started.

Omar was critical of him as well saying he was nothing special and wasting his chance... Armando was mostly dismissive. As you know, 2nd and 3rd string QBs are always fan favorites. I still remember people proclaiming Pat Devlin was being robbed and that Brock Jensen was a steal... ;-)

I hope Doughty sticks as he's a great story, but not so sure he has the overall physical ability at this level.

Well you will have to forgive me here but I think those people will tend to see what they expect to see. They form their opinions circumstantially rather than based on observable talent. What I meant about Himmelrich is this is a guy that purports to be evaluating the talent and he was saying that it sucked and that's the first anyone I've seen detail that the throws were bad, etc. On the other side of it, you have many people including the coach that have praised him and said that he's stood out.

There aren't very many people to be honest that I trust to pick talent out of a lineup rather than based on circumstances and expectations. I wouldn't even trust myself to be able to consistently do that if I hadn't shown myself that I could, year after year attending Shrine practices.

    http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/nfl/miami-dolphins/article93635487.html

After Dolphins training camp let out on Saturday, Brandon Doughty spent several minutes signing autographs for the young children lined up. Not too long ago, Doughty was one of those young children.
Doughty, a quarterback out of Western Kentucky, was a seventh round draft pick of the Dolphins this past NFL draft. He grew up in Davie, within four miles of the Dolphins training camp facility at Nova Southeastern University.
“I went to every training camp practice, all the youth camps; I did all that stuff,” Doughty says of his childhood.
As a child, his favorite player was Dan Marino. He was Dan Marino a couple times for Halloween. When he was developing as a quarterback, Doughty tried to emulate Jay Fiedler.
Doughty attended North Broward Prep, where he was named to the First-Team All-Broward County by the Miami Herald.
At Western Kentucky, Doughty was named Conference USA’s most valuable player in 2014 and 2015, leading the FBS in passing yards and passing touchdowns both seasons and leading his team to a conference championship in 2015.
“That’s in the past. You have to move on, see what amazing numbers I can put up in the NFL,” Doughty said of his stats at Western Kentucky. “I think anytime you come to a new place, you have to prove yourself all over again.”
He thinks he has more to prove coming from a small school.
“I think you’d be lying if someone said it wasn’t difficult,” Doughty says about going from being the star of the team to taking only a handful of reps during practice, “but you just have to learn your role and not skip steps and try to really, really just make this team. That’s my number one goal.”
Playing so close to home, Doughty’s friends and family have come out to training camp to watch him.

“It means a ton. It puts a little extra pressure on me,” he says of having them in the stands. He added, “what’s a life without pressure? I think life is all about being in pressure situations and competing.”
Doughty is trying to learn from everybody around him.
“He’s a quarterback guru, and he’s not labeled that for nothing. It’s pretty cool to have somebody who’s had success with quarterbacks like Jay Cutler and Peyton Manning,” he says of coach Adam Gase.

He says the Dolphins offense is “very complex compared to Western [Kentucky’s]. He says he has to work with the receivers to get the timing right. he tries to pick at the minds of quarterback Ryan Tannehill.
“Ryan Tannehill is one of the most accurate quarterbacks I’ve been around. That’s coming from me who led the nation in completion percentage (at 71.9 percent). The guy can throw the ball anywhere he wants,” said Doughty. “He’s a master of protections.”
Doughty admits to being a little frustrated after the first round of the draft. “I thought I was a first round pick. I think everyone does, being a competitor.”
Gase said that he has not determined whether he will keep two or three quarterbacks on the roster for the regular season, but he said about Doughty, “it was good to see that he really took some time over the summer and made sure that he knew what was going on.”
Whatever the road ahead, Doughty feels fortunate: “going through the draft and being selected to my hometown team, this couldn’t have happened any better.”

Odd comments on Tannehill as they directly contradict what some on this site have proclaimed.

Still not seeing where he's making the roster and not the PS right now. Let's see how he does in pre-season...

I have to admit i didn't totally get the Ryan being accurate thing. I think his completion % is high typically, but ball placement seems to be an issue at times. Also, don't get the master of protections, unless Ryan understands where the protection is supposed to be, even if maybe he doesn't quite understand during the play? Will have to see that during the preseason.

Yeah even Omar Kelly is praising Doughty saying "Great touchdown pass from Brandon Doughty to Thomas Duarte. Think we have our first standout QB. Two solid TD throws."

Of course that's Kelly's way of taking a jab at Tannehill.

Hal Habib also said, "Doughty to Rashawn Scott (rookie from UM), very pretty play. I keep typing the name Doughty. Hmm."

The progression thing kinda worries me, I would think you would want results over going through the progressions correctly???

I mean if your 3rd progression in the pattern has the defender fall down and he is running free wide open, are you supposed to say oops sorry, can't throw to you gotta look at my 1 and 2 progression first. Would you even see the 3rd quy wide open if you were busy looking at the other 2?

I love that he is spreading the ball around to the open receivers.

I'm not too worried about the progressions, Doughty seems to me to be the "mouse trap" type of QB, a la Dan, in that when he sees someone open, the throw just comes out, like triggering a mouse trap, it's like they don't "think" about it, it's just a natural reaction.

Well, if, let's say, the 3rd option is on the other side of the field from option 1, and you see the defender fall and throw to him...chances are you wouldn't have seen that I'd you'd been looking where you were supposed to be looking. So, they're probably wondering if he's getting lucky, or just looks at receivers differently.

I agree, but the coaches seems to want them to go through the progressions which is what concerns me. Like taking a QB that sees the entire field and actually reducing his vision by making him them go through progressions. that seems kinda odd. I understand calls are designed to go one place first.

Kind of wonder if what they're seeing in Doughty's progressions is him guessing who is going to be open before the ball is snapped and then using his eyes to draw the defense elsewhere. Basically he may be skipping steps in the progression and instead of going A to B to C, going Fake to B, and if that doesn't work going to C and maybe even back to A if A is tagging his route.

    http://dailydolphin.blog.palmbeachp...ndon-doughty-does-it-wrong-but-gets-it-right/

The ball is snapped, the rookie drops back to pass, starts going through his reads, and already, coach Adam Gase knows it’s all wrong.
Brandon Doughty is looking one receiver’s way, but it’s a mistake. Followed by another and another and another, followed by … a completion. Ten yards, first down.
    Gase scratches his head.
    Doughty shrugs.
    Neither can explain it.
If that scene happened once at Dolphins training camp, no big deal. Except it keeps happening, time and again, and it’s starting to become a big deal.
Gase, who knows something about quarterbacking, admits there are times he has “no idea” how Doughty does what he does.
“Your progressions are usually wrong but somehow you find a completion,” he told Doughty this summer.
“Well, that’s what I do,” Doughty said.
It happened about three times on Thursday alone, Gase said. No matter. Offensive coordinator Clyde Christensen pointed out that Doughty went four for five in one drill.
“He can do four things wrong and get a completion out of it,” Christensen said. “So he’s got a nice knack.”
Taken as a seventh-round pick as a project, Doughty is giving Gase and Christensen something to think about while showing why he posted staggering statistics at Western Kentucky: 12,855 career yards, a 68.6 completion percentage and 111 touchdown passes against 34 interceptions.
“Just kind of using my sense just to find guys open,” Doughty said.
Doughty, 24, grew up down the street from training camp in Davie and still can’t believe he’s playing for his childhood team as his idol, Dan Marino, watches him in practice daily. The other day, Peyton Manning stopped by, so Doughty picked his brain, too. Meanwhile, friends and family support him from the stands.
“My wife’s like, ‘Doesn’t that get annoying, your dad being here every day?’ ” Doughty said. “I’m like, ‘Nah, I wouldn’t have it any other way, man. That’s my Pops.’ He loves watching practice. I don’t want to disappoint that guy.”
History has its share of quarterbacks who went against the grain. Billy Kilmer was one. Nobody marveled at the beauty of Bernie Kosar’s release. Doughty admits the kid in him gets a kick out of perplexing coaches, but coaches praise his work ethic as he tries to “get those dang reads down.
“I wish I could go through my reads and get things going, but, you know, everything happens for a reason,” he said.
Showing touch and accuracy, Doughty is making a case for a spot on the active roster. Ryan Tannehill is the starter and veteran Matt Moore is his backup. Placing Doughty on the practice squad would expose him to every other team in the league. It would be risky, but so would be parting with Moore and going with only Tannehill and Doughty. Then again, Miami could keep three quarterbacks.
“We’re going to just see how it plays out,” Gase said, jokingly adding, “We haven’t played a preseason game. I’m sure the special tams coach wants two, the defensive coach wants one. I probably want four.”

I don't think he is "guessing" I think he is sensing and or seeing. But, you are correct he looks off defenders. I am not sure as a coach I would want him changing what he does.
