The Steelers have signed both Byron Leftwich and Daunte Culpepper. The two will compete for the backup spot throughout the remainder of the preseason. Leftwich may be the better fit as a pure backup with concerns that Culpepper would have to swallow quite a bit of pride to carry a clipboard. Aug. 9 - 9:14 pm et Rotoworld.com If Culpepper is cut, I think he goes to GB.
I think he ends up as the insurance to Rodgers. He was offered a deal earlier this off-season by the Packers but refused it, holding out for a bigger one. He could possibly end up in Chicago. I don't see him in Minnesota though. Didn't him and Childress have a fallout prior to him being moved to Miami? Or was Childress even there at the time?
Childress was there and the one who dumped that sorry *** on us for a 2nd rounder. Packers seems the likely destination for Culpepper, if Rodgers struggles, he comes in and gets 2 shots against the Vikings.
I think returning to Minnesota would be difficult for Culpepper. He'd have to swollow a lot of pride to return as a backup imo. I just dont see that happening, or them even pursuing him.
Is this serious... the steelers signed Culpepper... AND leftwich? Because Batch went down? What am I missing here. Guess that rules out Pitt as a possible destination for McCown. which is odd... all they needed was a backup. They probably could have gotten Mccown cheaper than either of these two guys... At least i'd like to think so. damn.
they thought t was the same person..culpepper slipped a carbon coppy type contract under leftwich's so while the steelers thought they were inking leftwich they also inked pepper.
I'm sure the Steelers have their eyes on the superbowl. Big Ben plays very physical and is not a stranger to missing a game or 2 due to injury, so they want to have a quality backup on hand. Batch actually won games for them in substitution, so they want a backup with a bit more than average talent as insurance.
It makes sense, sign two formerly good Qb's with checkered health and see if either one has anything left in the tank, C-pepe looked bad for the Raiders and Leftwich was cut by the Falcons. Keep the one that is less gimpy and cut the other one.
I respectfully disagree. Culpepper was actually good. Not great, but he was better than the starter he was backing up (who is now playing for us) and had a better win-to-loss record when he was in.
While he did make turnovers, Oakland actually won games with Culpepper on a more regular basis than with McCown.
He had 3 fumbles lost and 5 ints in 7 games - or a respectable 1.14 turnovers a game. McCown, on the other hand, had 3 fumbles lost and 11 ints in 9 games - or 1.55 turnovers a game. Beck, had 5 fumbles lost and 3 ints in 5 games - or 1.6 turnovers a game.
Interesting, this article says Leftwich hasn't even met with the Steelers as of this morning. http://www.timesonline.com/articles/2008/08/09/sports/doc489e62b745086841603124.txt
All of those stats are WAAAAYYYYY too high. That this FO signed Josh McCown before Culpepper is maddening! Culpepper should be wearing a Dolphins uniform. I still haven't heard a valid reason as to why supposed QB guru Cameron cut Culpepper. Trent Green was old, unathletic, weaker armed and also coming off of serious injury.
Yes - I was very unhappy with the aquisitions of both Green and McCown. To be fair, though, when most people talk about Culpepper and turnovers, they generally mean fumbles - whether or not Culpepper actually turned the ball over. Last year, Culpepper did have 9 fumbles in 7 games, losing 3. McCown kept pace though, having 11 fumbles in 9 games, losing 3 (to go with the 11 picks).
