It's PS game two. Don't fool yourselves. The performance of our first team matters. There was no pressure whatsoever on Romo. I don't care what the second and third team did or didn't do. Our starting D-line of geriatric all stars got no pressure. Suh got not pressure. We were manhandled. Our LB core looks like they have no skills whatsoever. Our secondary looked horrible too. Don't give me al this BS that PS doesn't matter. It's not like we have this big bag of pressure that we;re saving for RS. Stars glisten no matter the situation. We look to have none on D. WE DO NOT HAVE THE OFFENSE TO STAY AHEAD OF THE OTHER TEAM IF THE D IS FLAT. I mean we just don't.
I understand your frustration, and it is indeed looking like this. Dallas, with Romo, is an elite team. That's the only silver-lining. How many elite teams are we playing? I have been preaching all offseason to stop the run more than rush the passer, and that's what is frustrating to me.

You didn't see the 86 - 87 defenses of Chuck Studley, apparently. But yeah, they're pretty damned bad. The front is overpaid and on the downhill side of their carrer, the #1 LBs are all JAGs and we're hoping for a stiff, grabby rookie who missed TC to fill the CB2 spot. Could have used some LB in that draft.

Yea, it is football though. I have seen teams dominate in preseason and win 2 games. I have seen teams look terrible in preseason and win the superbowl. That is the way preseason works. If Preseason was the aboveall and endall then Jon Kitna would be a hall of fame player.
I did see Suh get some pressure up the middle on multiple occasions actually, and let's not forget that Dallas has the best offensive line in the league. I believe they have 3-4 pro bowlers on that line.
I think my dad told me that Miami lost all of their preseason games when they went undefeated. Not sure how accurate that is.
Who winds up winning is irrelevant. How your starters look against the other team's starters is what's relevant. We looked like crap.
I agree with both statements here. Suh is an obvious strength but outside of he and Jones at SS, I don't know. Maybe there's a little depth in certain places. I don't mind some of the youngsters along the D-line nor do I have an issue with some of the depth at CB. The team still lacks top-end talent at DE, MLB and CB. This is year one and the expectations are probably not going to be met. I like cbrad's take that it's really just about Gase and Tannehill. If you feel confident about the offense's potential after this year, you can go about rebuilding the defense next year. But the problem of their being so many holes is what seems troubling. We were supposed to see this team go out and land it's future franchise DE in the draft. That didn't happen. Miami did grab a young CB but he's not healthy so he's not contributing. We wanted LBs but we never got LBs. What the team did sign in FA was not all that exciting. Kiko is playing MLB when you ought to be WLB/SLB. Neither IAQ nor Maxwell are much to write home about right now. Both are about average.

No problem, I won't overreact. Because I have been saying all along that this is a bad defense and that we may have the worst LB's and secondary in the entire league. Unfortunately it doesn't appear that the "over the hill gang"on the DL is going to be able to cover up for how terrible the LB's and secondary are going to be this year. This is certainly looking like a 3-4 win team at this time.

I'm okay with folks that say preseason W/L records don't mean anything. You're watching 3-4 different games all packed into one. I would be confident in guessing that whether you come out on top at the end is entirely irrelevant in terms of predicting the regular season W/L record. But there's a difference between winning and performance. What you're looking for in preseason is performance. Things are obviously not synced up to the point they need to be. That's easy to see. If the starters are out there getting waxed that's not nothing. The Great Dallas ***-Kicking should most certainly light a fire under this squad. I expect camp battles between the offense and defense to heat up. I expect coaches to press the players harder, particularly the starters on defense. Both the offense and the defense need to come out and show more against Atlanta next week. There's no doubt about that. Missed tackles and lousy blocks are not something that we can afford for more than a few days. Things like that need to be cleaned up relatively quickly. Hopefully, that's just a matter of effort and pride for some of the starters.
I don't have the Dolphins winning 10 games (although I hope they do), but a team's winning percentage in the preseason shows absolutely no evidence of predicting the regular season.
Also not true. Point differential, points scored, and points allowed, in the preseason, is also pretty meaningless in regards to predicting regular season performance. Again, I don't see the Dolphins winning 10 games this season, but I highly doubt they look nearly as bad as they did yesterday in the regular season.
I agree, the LBers are at best bad, it has nothing to do with scheme or w/l but performance and Alonso and the rest looked average on their best plays. Kiko just slides off RBs , makes tackles 10 yards down field and cant get off blocks is late in pursuit and bad angles....i hope something clicks but so far they dont pass the eye test.
Preseason is important in these ways only: - Getting out of it with few injuries - Letting guys get back to the speed and and punishment of the game before the season starts - Whose gonna make the bottom half of the roster - Trying out some plays/formations Nothing else is important from wins and losses to stats to even tape on starters (as many vets are playing half speed to avoid injury and there's no real game planning going on).

We continue to see years of LB neglect. No matter the FO they always believed they could just "find" good backers and we'd be set. I don't get this fascination with passive, non-instinctive catch tackling linebackers. Give me alpha dogs who know where to go while driving through offensive players, any day.

For the non-starters, yes. Let's be real. Every year there may be what, 2, at most 3, players that we don't know if they are the starter for each team in the NFL.
In 2009 the Colts went 0-4 and gave up 160 points in 4 games during the preseason. They went on to go 14-2 in the regular season.
You seem not to care about things but I'll say this much...the coaches are having important conversations about this stuff so it's not irrelevant. You say "non-starters." That'd be great if we were the Denver Broncos, but the majority of the "starters" for Miami are either making adjustments in their role or are completely new. Think about who's on that list. Right now, we're evaluating several key positions where we don't know who the starter is or what the starter is QB: Tannehill OG: Tunsil - Turner - Bushrod RB: Ajayi - Foster - Pead - Williams WR: Parker - Carroo - Grant TE: Cameron - Jones DT: Phillips - Jones - Warmsley DE: Branch - Williams - Fede - Jones LB: Alonso - Jenkins - Hull - Hewitt FS: Abdul-Quddus CB: Maxwell - McCain - Lippett - Pitts - Others There are known commodities like Albert, Pouncey, Landry, Suh, Misi and Jones. You more or less know what you're going to get from those guys. But in the case of everyone else, they are either unknown quantities or they are adjusting to a new scheme. That's a lot of guys who are in contention fighting for roster spots. There are vets who will make the team but who may not play well so we're paying attention now during these first few preseason games. You may not care too much about it but it's not nothing. This is where the team really begins to come together.
Out of the players that you listed, the coached know who will be the starters. Most of us here can name the starting offensive and defensive starting 22. Preseason is to get back up to game speed and choose who makes the 53 man roster. And by that I mean the non-starters on that roster.
Because of no football for months people just go crazy based on what they first see in a long while. Yeah, the defense looks bad but the way teams and some players look in the preseason is meaningless. Like the folks who think the sky is falling should the cowboys bench Romo because Dak has been killing it in the preseason or that's just crazy talk?
If you don't want to talk about what's going on during the offseason or camp or preseason then don't take part. That's all I can really tell you guys.
I wasn't talking about how the starters looked. I was talking about Miami losing all of their preseason games during their undefeated season. I understand the starters did not look great. The run game did not look great. That can be worked on. The defense in general really looked bad on occasion: missed tackles, bad angles, poor aggression, no real pressure, stupid penalties. I'm not really impressed with this wide-9 defense so far. Do not know if it's the personnel, or the defensive scheme. It looks like there are times where this defense has chances for negative plays. Several chances each game. Whether it's bad tackling or bad angles, the players seem to make a mistake. Also do not like that it looks like there is a big hole in the middle of this defense. Give it to Dallas, they have a really good O-line and a pretty good offense in general. Hope this pisses the players off.
We don't look good on D. I will say though that Cameron Wake is the heart and soul of this team. When he starts making plays things start clicking. If he comes back strong, and I have to believe he will, he improves us dramatically. Xavier Howard hasn't played yet. Vance Joseph has said he still thinks Xavien can be our day 1 starter, and I bet he is. We signed Chris Culliver who has been pretty good in this league. Again, we didn't look good, but we're not at full strength yet and we're likely running vanilla schemes. Idk, stay positive. Or don't.
its a brand new defense and what I see is a lot of players thinking and not reacting quickly enough at this stage. i see the same on offense. its a bit tough evaluating players off these games since they are still working the kinks out. Evaluating them off of what they're doing in practice is much better at this stage but unfortunately that leaves most of us on the outside looking in
Another year, another round of incessant arguments that mean absolutely nothing in the grand scheme of things. At least some things never change. Pre-season does matter since it helps determine the final roster, and it's also an indicator of how polished the first teams are early in training camp. Plus, it lets us watch football about a month early...which definitely matters to me. But I don't think anyone here is in a position to say what doesn't matter, because none of us are the ones making evaluations and sending 40+ people packing from each team over the next two weeks. Tell those guys getting cut that preseason doesn't matter and brace for their reaction...it's not going to be pretty since they're leaving their hearts and souls on the field to earn a shot at an NFL roster. And if it matters to the coaches, fans, and the players alike, then there's not too much more to talk about here. Preseason always matters.
