Just out of curiosity, I was wondering if you guys would be willing to rank our running backs from best to worst. I am just curious what the hierarchy would be.

Lol agreed. Landry does have a nice skillset for the position.

I hope we see Foster or Ajayi do...something...next week. Hopefully last night was a rust shaking type of thing for Foster, though expecting him to be a lead back type might be wishful thinking.

I could definitely see us scooping someone up after all the teams make cuts though. Odds are someone solid at that position will be available.

Well, there's a good sense that Foster and Ajayi are locks for the regular season so the real question is who wins the battle for 3rd between Williams, Drake and Pead.

I can tell you that Pead's stock is doing great after 2 solid preseason performances in which he's not only shown good things as a RB but also contributed in the passing game. It's a safe bet to say he's probably the favorite for 3rd right now in the eyes of Gase.

Drake is injured and will very likely be on the IR (designated to return) list. This makes sense logistically. It gives him a "free pass" into the regular season as the #4 guy which makes sense because, after all, the team spent a 3rd round pick on him this year. He's not going anywhere.

This leaves Damien Williams as the odd-man out which doesn't seem unfair. He has talent but he doesn't look as valuable as Pead right now, who has simply done more this offseason. Let's also give Pead some respect. It's the ACL/MCL injuries that have hindered him, not a lack of talent. A healthy Pead could be a real weapon. You don't have as much confidence in the case of Damien Williams. You've seen what he is.

    Ajayi - Foster - Pead - Drake - Williams

Here's the deal though. Foster hasn't looked very good athletically. His value is in his all around abilties. He can catch. He can pass block. That's important when Ajayi isn't excelling at either. But as the season goes along, I wouldn't be surprised to see Foster fall while Pead and Drake both rise.

We're all excited about what Jakeem Grant could be as a receiver. To me, Pead is now that guy in the backfield. Both guys could wind up getting regular touches in the second half of the season.

As a final caveat to all of that, next year's draft should provide some real talent at RB--more than this year's did anyway. So this is a very important year in terms of evaluating what you have at that position (i.e. Jay Ajayi). Some think he's a feature back that fell because of the uncertainties surrounding that knee, but rest assured there's a lot more to it that just that. Ajayi needs to improve on several elements of his game: receiving, blocking, vision, etc.

Ajayi should not have been handed the role of starter. That was never the plan. Ajayi was supposed to supplement Lamar Miller, but he got away. Then it was CJ Anderson, but he got away. Then they just wanted help, but Chris Johnson got away. Ultimately the team still brought in Foster and Pead, but now Miami's in a position where all of a sudden Ajayi is "they guy."

It's another situation where you blink and realize the current is pushing you in the wrong direction.

We saw the same thing happen at DE. You let Vernon and Shelby walk thinking you've got the draft right in front of you and the next thing you know, the draft doesn't fall that way and you're drafting a super talented LT instead of a future franchise DE. Now you're stuck praying that a declining veteran FA has a resurgence or that someone unknown bails you out.

Hopefully Miami can fight through both of these things but it just goes to show how rebuilding is such a volatile time.

It really doesn't matter if there is never a hole. I think ajayi and foster will be fine...if there's ever a hole.

to me, performance based (setting aside the $ and draft value, etc.): Pead's been impressive, and hopefully not overlooked or underestimated.

not yet, but there will be an hierarchy eventually. having said that, based on very limited play & who we know these people are , etc.

Ajayi and/or Foster, Pead, Drake,Williams or Thomas... got to make allowances for the the possibility of Foster not being the gamer he once was & a Thomas come-back, just maybe something has clicked with his game. who looks the best to me up until now? Pead.

I hate to say this, but I feel if Miami's defense stays on the field and gets crushed again, we will be forced to abandon the run again. The same trends of last year are bubbling up, this time in preseason, earlier. We didn't see this last year until game 1

Way too small of a sample size at this point.
