The Dolphins had A.J. Hawk in for a workout, but he wasn’t the veteran linebacker that earned a job with the team on Tuesday. Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports that Miami will add former Chargers linebacker Donald Butler to the roster. He’ll presumably take the roster spot that will open when defensive tackle Earl Mitchell is placed on injured reserve. Butler joined Hawk and other linebackers at a workout for the team before agreeing to the contract. Butler was released by the Chargers in March, a move that came two years after they signed him to a seven-year extension. Butler had been an effective player on the way to signing that deal, but his play fell off dramatically in his last two years in San Diego and he was benched during the 2015 season. He spent training camp and the preseason with the Cardinals, but failed to make the cut to 53 players.
Thank God Phillips played well on Sunday. Actually, Warmsley flashed as well. I think between those two and Suh we should be alright. We can at least make due. Sucks to hear though. I hate hearing about anyone going down.
Yeah but we're down 3 defensivelinemen if you consider Phillips ankle injury. Not that I think Phillips will miss time, but I think they need to pick up one more somewhere. I don't think 6 is enough to go into a game with.
Not that I expect the Fins to pursue, but C.J. Spiller was released today. Jay Ajayi will be active for this Sunday.
I prefer Butler over AJ Hawk if we are speaking on age alone. I've watched quite a few San Diego games and three years ago this guy looked like a legit linebacker in the NFL. Not sure what happened, but hopefully we catch a break and he can contribute for us. Sucks about Earl Mitchell and I hope to see him back this season, but the other DT spot clearly belongs to Phillips moving forward.
